About me:
I am 44 and Dustin is my youngest son of 2. Last Feb. 2008 my husband and I received full custody of my granddaughter first son's baby. I believe God gave me her, because this is really hard to say "good-bye" to my "baby". He will be leaving on January 11, 2009. I am a Christian and believe all things happen for a reason.

From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
I am willing to let go, though not by choice , but I know he has to grow. So I am ready to learn alot about the Navy and what my son and the Navy can accomplish together.

Sherrie I cant add to the advise that the others have given. Everyone on N4M's always give GREAT advise! All I can say is I am here and still thinking about you and your family. Mentally holding hands waiting for the call, the box or the letter with his address. Send him a big hug from all of us.

I am so glad you are feeling better. I was worried about getting the box but it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. When you get your first letter it will help also. Good luck.

Let your granddaughter help with the letter writing. If she isn't old enough to write a letter, she can always color him a picture. Trust me it will mean the world to him. My youngest drew & colored one of my son's fav anime characters, & had me mail it to him at boot camp. He loved it. When he opened it, he broke down & cried. It reminded him of them watching cartoons together. They share those letters & pictures with their division mates, they are so proud of their families supporting them. I am sure it would make her feel included and very "grown up" to draw, color or write him a note.

You are doing the best thing, getting letters ready to mail to him as soon as you get his address! Just keep writing him! Keep yourself busy, and come here for plenty of support! You are a Navy Mom now!!! Take Care & Keep me posted!

Sherrie, for some reason or another sometimes that first phone call does not come. They have to use payphones to call and some don't work good. I know I remember one Mom saying her son couldn't get the phone to work and didn't know what to do so he just didn't make the call. The first few days are an adjustment to them. Just start writing him letters so when you get his address you can mail them off. They really do live for mail call. My son said that was so important to him. He will be fine and so will you. I think it is harder on us Mom's than them. They are busy and learning all this new stuff and we are just missing them. Take care and hugs to you and your new recruit.

I know you are sad right now and I wish I could be there to wait with you. Just know that we are all "right there" and we will be holding your hands while you wait. If you do not get the call just remember that I am sure if he could he would have called you the min he got there and will call you or write you as soon as he can. I was told to start writing letters now and as soon as you get his address send them all off. He will love getting a lot of letters at one time.

All I can say is pray and write alot....I sent him all kinds of different things in the mail...comic strips from the newspaper, inspirational notes and poems, scripture verses, sports news, Jokes etc. Keeps them looking foward to something every day!
