Hello, CMC Bowes, my son is currently in boot camp in his 3rd week. He told me this weekend that he was told he would be going to Pensacola for about 2 weeks after BC and then to the fleet. We thought he would be in A school for at least 8 weeks. When I looked back at his enlistment papers, he is designated as Airman Career Track (APACT). I know when he went into the DEP program, everything he asked for was full. Does this mean he is "undesignated." What can he expect when he gets to the fleet and how long will he be there? I think he is as much in the dark about his career as we are. I just want him to be able to make the right choices. How can I be sure that he will get the right guidance? Thank you so much for your time.

Hello, I was amused to see that you may attend an event in Avondale Arizona. I lived there many years, in fact I graduated High School at Agua Fria High School there..of course this was when it was just a tiny little nothing town..I hear it's grown drastically. I came to your page via the undesignated group for some information and advice. My son lost his rating and all of his work and dreams due to an incredibly unexpected and stupid act on his part. This was before he was able to class up for anything. He's in Pensacola, attended Captains mast and had a lot of backing, therefore they gave him a second chance. At this point I'm not sure he believes it is a good thing or not. He is currently serving 30 days in CCU and will then go undesignated to fleet. He is not doing well and is incredibly concerned over what undesignated will mean...he is convinced that he will end up on a ship..on the flight deck doing horrible work and hanging off the side of the ship chipping paint. He appears to have his sources for this thinking. He seems to believe that as undes he will work longer hours, have less liberty time, and he is almost comparing it to being in BC, CCU or phase 1 for his entire contract. Can you give me some thoughts on what type of things airmen undesignated end up doing, other than chipping paint? And are they not afforded the same time off and priveleges and liberties as other navy ratings? And I have two other questions for you...1) if he strikes for a rating when he is able to..will his contract then be redone creating a longer time for him to be active? 2) He originally had a six year contract due to his aviation rescue swimmer rating, as he is now going undes...do you know if they will rewrite the contract to 4 years or is he required to do the 6 years active regardless? Any help would be appreciated..he fought to stay in even though he lost everything he had hoped for and his recent call from CCU has me worried..though I know CCU is not suppose to be fun. Thank You!

Hello CMC Bowes: I have a quick question for you. My son PIR 10/10 and wanted to be a corpsman and stayed in GL for his training. According to him, he did not pass one of the tests twice, and so he went undesignated after his academic hearing. He now knows he will be going to Coronado to study with the Seabees. He said that he will not actually be a Seabee, but will be working with them. What I am wondering is can he advance beyond this with hard work? I'm trying to encourage him, and he is handling it all very well now after being disappointed at missing his chance to be a medic. I know that his study skills need strengthening! What are his choices in the future? He'd like to make the Navy and serving his country a career. Thank you for your time!

Hello CMC Bowes,
Just wanted to update you on my Thanksgiving trip to Corry Station. It was great and the Thanksgiving meal was very good!! Thank you for suggesting that families can do that, it was wonderful, (reminded me of a visit about age 5 to Fort Campbell when my brother was there at Thanksgiving). The visit with my son was, of course, the best of all. Our family enjoyed our week in the area and we all went bowling on Friday evening at the Liberty Center.

I have a question about CTR A School graduation. My son classed up the week before Thanksgiving and he said he's been told graduation is on Tuesday, March 24. Since March is normally Spring Break time, I'm trying to figure out when to set up a rental unit for graduation for all of our family. I've heard of other graduations on Fridays, so I was wondering if there is a set day of the week for graduations at Corry Station, and CTR's in particular?

Thank you for all of your help and information. I greatly appreciate the time you take from your busy schedule to assist all of us moms. CJ

Master Chief,
Couple of quick questions--I keep hearing the other crypto moms talking about "A" school and "C" school and my son says he is in "ATT" school right now in pensacola. Is this a requisite to "A" school or another name for "A" school? I am confused! Since I get very little information from him, I am turning to you for help! He is going to be a CTM.

Thank you for making yourself available to us. Is it possible for a Sailor Recruit to choose undesignated status while in A school in order to explore and observe other opportunitites that might be available to him? Or is this status always a result of the SR's inability, whatever the reason, to complete A school? Also, I am interested in information about the ESWS program and can find little info about what one in this program can expect. Thanks again for being here!

CMC Bowes: I just wanted to thank you for being available to all of us. You have taken time to answer so many questions, attend a N4M's potluck and even join some groups that really needed support. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving....you are one of our blessings.
