Hi - I need a recruiter's take on this - my son originally got a contract in Advanced Electronics with a ship date of Jan 4th. He passed a PST weeks ago for Rescue Swimmer and was told it would take about a month for the new contract to come back an…

What nice news to wake up to! Now I hear the Repub's may be planning a filibuster in the Senate. Guess they want to make sure people keep going bankrupt or die because they can't afford health care. What is wrong with these people? Thanks for that…

Clockard and Jill - thank you for your kind words. As hard as the work can be at times, I love what I do. When I got my job at the VA, I felt like I'd won the lottery. I experience amazing moments over and over - like the Viet Nam vets who have carr…

Just listened to Pres Obama speaking about the upcoming vote on the health care reform bill. Looks like they will vote today - with every single Republican in the House having vowed to vote against it. More effective governance from the wingnuts in…

Hi All - hard week. Jill - I saw your comment below. How to make any sense of a psychiatrist turning into a murderer of fellow soldiers? I just listened to a segment on Keith Olbermann's show that shed some light on the shooter. They said he wanted…

Now - I'd like to share some good news! I posted on here last week about my son getting a speeding ticket. I was worried it might jeopardize his standing. He did call his recruiter and it's not a problem. Whew! Actually, his recruiter then called h…

Thinking of you with this tragedy at Ft. Hood - could you come to the Liberal Group and tell us what you think?

Hi Susan -
I just moved on from an on call job I have been doing. Feels good!
Jesse and I speak on skype when we can - fun! He likes Italy a lot. I feel for you and your son being on hold. Hope it happens soon. Jesse met lots of people older than him & I went into Army after college - 25 is not old. But I am sure he is ready already.
Excited about hosting the reunion - meeting some of you W & F moms in the flesh.

Hi Susan L. I was catching up on the DEPPERs Group when I saw your July 14 post. I have a 21 year old who had two years of college before he DEPped and went in. That part went pretty smoothly overall for him. (Except that he suddenly switched his Rate, which moved his leave date up by almost two months. He had one week to get ready to ship out!) What has not been so easy is the process for him to change rates and his Reserve-Active status since graduating from HM "A" school.

He really has a drive and dream to be in Spec Opps. I tell you this because I want to encourage your son to always respectfully speak up, volunteer, advocate for himself, learn to speak to the right people who know the right people (but NEVER jump his chain of command!) and how to make things happen, and to be persistent and determined in reaching every one of his goals. My son has more than once had to deal with the Navy's famous "Hurry up and Wait" mode of operation, it can be VERY frustrating!! The only constant is change and time frames do vary depending on many circumstances. "Needs of the Navy" and the fiscal year determines a lot. Sometimes a Recruiter or Commanding Officer goes to bat for you and is very helpful, but you don't always find that Navy personell are in all that much of a hurry to make things happen for you; paperwork tends to get buried/lost on desks, people doing the jobs change and you must reacquaint the new people with your processes etc.

He has had his requests/orders denied or lost three times, and finally, after months of trying to make this happen for himself, the door has flung open and he is going to get a chance to pursue his dream. :D BUT, his time has not been wasted. He set out to work hard, (physically and academically) show his leadership potential, build his skills and rise to the top and get noticed as a DEPper, BC Recruit and now Corpsman. (You are welcome to read my blogs on my page about his accomplishments and journey so far) Being older has helped, though he was not known before for being very patient. :) His time in the Navy has further tempered and matured him, he has studied and applied himself like NEVER before and he has learned much. Great things await your son. He will get there, it may take longer than either of you would prefer, but it will all probably pay off in the long run. Be happy to answer any further questions you have. Sorry this is so long, but I hope I've helped in some way.

I am going to go read your mental health discussion. this is definitely an issue of interest to me. With scores that put him in the top 6 of his class, my son was able chose to do his Clinicals at the VA hospital there at GL. It was an eye opening, enriching time of listening to the Vets stories and opinions, to see Service to one's country from the other side of his journey. He enjoyed it and was moved and affected by his time with them. He has a very realistic view of where he is headed and what all the sacrifices and possible effects are later. That part worries his Mom, but I am behind him 100% all the way. God Bless you and your son. Let me know how he's doing. Oh and my advise, stay out of the "Chat room" and the political discussions on here. Stick with the DEP and BC moms (and your State, hobbies or uplifting Groups like Molly's Adopt a Sailor) Groups to make enriching, encouraging and lasting friendships that you will need now and all through his time of service! IMHO N4Ms is really the right place for you both right now. :-) Hang in there! Take care.

Susan, please don't give up on this site....find a few good friends and stick with them....Navy for Moms is the best and you will find a lot more good than bad...
We care about you and what you're going through and hope to help you out in any way that we can.
When the site was brand new a sailor got very ill in boot camp. When his mom asked for advice and help in what to do, in MINUTES there were moms researching, calling, making plans to help.... That Mom was at her son's bedside by that night and she thanks the Navy Moms for showing her her options...etc.
Please write if we can help, or just to be there, or a shoulder to cry on...we want to do all that for you if we are able.
hugs and prayers,
colleen

Susan -
Jesse is half way through A school now. The young man who left rarely applied himself consistently. He is now class leader (he says he tells people to "shut the _ up" HA!) and is academically #1 in his IT class. Who would have guessed that this would be the thing that motivated him. He sets goals and looks ahead to where he wants to be.............finish degree, make next rates, officer someday...I tell you this because it is thrilling to behold and I know you can relate! I would love to follow your adventure as your son moves ahead. Let me know when he gets word!
