Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
to read everything and make sure that you keep a open line of communication with my son!!Making sure to always be postive and tell him that we are so very proud of him!!
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

I'm not sure how this works. The ceremony in Los Angeles is not a definate. I guess that depends on funding. But there should be a ceremony somewhere and I can't imagine that the families wouldn't be allowed to attend. The crew probably has to make arrangements so their families can attend. Matt is due home on leave over the holidays. I'll ask him about it then.

I should have asked.....do you know about the decommissioning? In case you don't, the Los Angeles is being decommissioned after this deployment which is ending soon. They are due back in Pearl sometime in the middle of November. After New Years, the boat is headed up to Bremerton Washington to be dismanteled. They may or may not stop in Los Angeles on the way. We're waiting for news on that. How long they will be in Washington depends on what their job is. I think the nukes stay the longest, machinists next and then everybody else the least amount of time. Matt has said that after he is done in Washington, he will be reassigned to another boat and it will not be out of Pearl. He doesn't want to go back to Hawaii, too far from home, too expensive and Honolulu is just another big city. My guess is your son will only be in Honolulu a short time, unless he gets reassigned there. Hope that helps!

I'm not sure I understand your question. Matt doesn't have a car in Hawaii but his stuff is in his "room". When he's in Pearl, he has a room, like a dorm room, in a high rise on the base. When they are done with this deployment, they head up to Washington and may stop in LA on the way. I'm not real sure how their stuff gets to Washington. I can't imagine they could take much on the sub. Maybe they ship it but they probably have to pay for that themselves. Matt has shipped a few things home (like his guitar) and we're just storing it for him here.

What to do, what to do....Send little packages, books, magazines, pictures. Never send perishables. They usually only get packages when they hit a port. Never forward an e mail, always make it a fresh one. Don't send any attachments to e mails. Don't mention where the boat is on this website (if you even know, which we usually don't). When he hits a port, tell him to buy international calling cards. If he has a cell with him, they actually work from Guam but cost a fortune and so do collect calls. Encourage him in his studies for his dolphins. That's a huge accomplishment when they get them. We send each other messages when we hear from our kids. In case one gets to call before another, we at least know we'll hear from them soon.

hi
Pray for your son daily
when you talk to him
tell him about the things you are doing at home and what is going on in your home town like football games or how the streets are doing or what is going on on TV
tell him you are proud of him andyou love him and thank him for his service in the Navy.

Hi Susie,
I just saw your note in Hawaii group that said your son was waiting on the Los Angeles. My son is on the LA. He met up with them in Guam a few months ago for his first deployment. The boat's going to be decommissioned at the beginning of 2010 with a possible ceremony in LA. Then it's heading up to Washington where eventually everyone will be reassigned. Not sure if you knew all that. By the way, I live in Cameron Park, CA, 30 miles east of Sacramento. I'm "friends" with two other navy moms whose son's are also on the LA. You can probably link to them on my site under My Friends. It's Anna and Amy.
