He's in Africa for 2 more weeks. he hates it. He hates the heat, the poverty, the filth, the dead camels burning by the side of the road, the qat chewing bondage the people are in, the extreme government luxury in comparison. He hates the over sized shipping crate he has to call home. However, he was married just 10 days before he deployed. When you're missing your sweetheart, everything is worse. Hence he has a very negative attitude.
I have sent him books, letters, pictures. Candy that does not melt is ok, but not chocolate. I sent him journals and drawing pens and paper and water colors. We finally sent him his guitar, since he was going nuts without it. So by all means, if your boy is musical at all, send him something to make music on. Even a harmonica. I did brave sending him some chapstick, making sure it was well wrapped and sealed. He told me it made it ok, but the Easter chocolate was smeared all over everything. News of his favorite sports teams was always welcomed too. Maybe an issue or two of Sports Illustrated or the sports section of the local paper would be good if your boy's a sports fan.
Mark called us on Skype a few times and it was good to see him, even though he was so sad, so make sure your boy has the internet. Mark said that a lot of the base's bandwidth was taken up by people playing. W.O.W. and other interactive computer games, so while these are cool, they mess up everyone else. I would recommend a hand held game boy or something along that line if he's into computer games.
Mark worked hard while he was there. As a CM, he was on call up to 16 hours a day between working on motors and taking watch duty. Despite how grueling it has been for him, and worrying sick during the pirate stuff, I'm proud of him and his service.

Sussane, I wrote a letter everyday and he always got them. From what I understand from my son, They got mail every evening Mon-Friday. It took about 4 days for him to get my letters. I personally never experienced them holding mail, but I have read that some have had their mail held for certain reasons. Hope this helps!!!f you have any questions, please contact me and I will try to answer them for you. Susan

Ok, I have another question do they get their mail or are they made to work for it if they want to read it? I am confused the websites I have read say they don't get their mail they are witheld from them ....Does anyone know exactly how that works? I don't want my son to get punished for me sending him letters he has only been gone with today 3 days and I already have a letter for all three days....Would this be wrong? Can some one let me know. Thank you,
