Of course, I thought having a son would mean an easier job sorting socks--was I mistaken!
As far as follow up, my plate is rather full with homeschooling three kids, plus I started a sponsor a Sailor effort on the Wa/Ore moms site and I follow quite a few groups and threads. So, I'll let you and the other Moms you know who would be interested take the lead on this one. I'll be standing by ready to assist. Make a friend request if you need to share any sensitive info and I'll respond. Hope you're feeling better, I got hit with a nasty bug last weekend myself. :( I'm still coughing but after three days in bed, I'm so glad to be up and about. My poor neglected house looks like a bomb went off, especially the kitchen, (kids made dinner etc.) so I'd better go turn my attention elsewhere. On second thought, maybe I'll just go take a nap! :-) Keep in touch.
Remember that part of the BC process is to take civilian kids from all backgrounds and walks of life, some with major "it's all about me", backtalkin' attitudes and chips on their shoulders, some who have been lazy and indulged and in 8 "short" weeks, break them down to build them back up into unselfish young men and women who are team players and ready to serve. They have to make them dig down deep to see what they are made of, to push them to and sometimes just beyond their limits, but never to a dangerous emotional breaking point. Some RDCs are better and more mindful of that I'll grant you.
Many kids come in emotionally wounded and weak, and only under the intensity of the BC experience, do issues that were previously hidden and perhaps ignored or somehow managed come to the surface. How trained the officers are to spot the signs, I don't know, but I do know that the Chaplains are available 24/7 to any recruit who needs them. They just have to ask, I'm sure many don't. The loss of even one is a tragedy and I share your concern. Just be careful to be objective and check your emotions and your facts.
Moms can advocate and make a difference. Things are getting better on Ship 17, largely I suspect because a group of vocal N4Ms and others demanded accountability and change. Perhaps the time has come to address this concern as well. Where or from whom did you "hear"about the three incidences? Do you have other Mom friends who would like to help with your inquiry and draft a plan to address this horrible situation? Sorry this post is so long! Let me know.
