Profile Information

About me:
My name is Terrie. My youngest daughter KC (20yo) just joined the NAVY and left her home Spokane, WA on 2/11/09 for boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. We have received one letter so far and it was of regret. I believe most everyone's first letters from boot camp sound this way. I spoiled my children and didn't place a lot of expectations on them. I feel bad now because I think if I had she would have an easier time accepting her duty. In her letter from boot camp she said, "I picked up a nick name 'Silent' Dooley" I thought it was funny because everyone has heard the term "Silent but deadly" So now I call her "Silent but Dooley" She has always been a solitary and quiet child. That is why I worry about her so much.
My husband was a 15+ Navy man, who got out in 1992. We were not the typical military family in all those years. As a family we were impacted by all the negative issues of Navy life, like Desert Storm, West Packs, and weekly duty. We never took advantage of the travel or friendships with other Navy families.
Since my husband Kevin (Silent's Father) had experienced boot camp he gave Silent heedful advice before she left: Partner up--make friends, pay attention and focus on what it is you need to do. Of course, I worry about her making friends because she is so quiet and solitary.
My career is in Nursing. I am a Dialysis Clinic Manager in Spokane. I was hoping this web site would help me in supporting my daughter through boot camp and later through her career in the Navy. I have a lot of questions and thought this might be a way to get them answered.
I am here to support or represent my:
Child/Stepchild
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
To take advantage of all the benefits the Navy has to offer. As a military person you will be impacted by the negative aspects no matter what, one might as well take advantage of the positive ones as well. It is all about balancing the good with the bad. If I would have traveled and made friends (sailor's wife) like he did, it would have been a more balanced experience for me. As parent's of an enlisted, and knowing what I know now, we will take advantage of going to Silents' Pass and Review. Although, Kevin has been to Chicago and Great Lakes for his "A" school, it will be the first time for me. Silent thinks she is going to Pensicola, FL for her schooling and I plan to see her there also, since my Mother lives in Orlando. Since my daughter is a sailor now there is nothing to do but plan for the times we can be together, to balance the times we are apart.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Oh Katie-You don't know how grateful I am for your reply. What a thoughtful person you are to ask about KC on your phone call and to convey to me, she is OK. I am glad you got a phone call from Lexi yesterday. I hoped to hear from KC again before we left on our trip back East to Great Lakes. I am so sorry you are a wreck! I am not sure who this is harder on: the girls or their Moms. This will all be over soon. PIR is approaching us very soon. I can't wait to see you at Flannigan's and we will "toast" to our daughters. See you soon, Terrie

Terrie, Finally got my call tonite! I'm a wreck! One thing Lexi did say, that came thru is that she does know your daughter & she's doing OK. She said she's quiet, but she's doing well. Most of the rest of the conversation was broken up. I could hardly hear her.

Hi Terrie - Welcome to the site! I seen your post about your son's graduation date. The forum you posted it in ...is from a year ago when my son was graduating. Typically you will receive a graduation package from your son about 4 weeks after he reports to bootcamp but since you shared his division # I was able to look up his graduation - so here is your good news..he is going to graduate/PIR on April 10th!!! Details below for you!

You should go to groups and search for a April 10, 2009 PIR group - I'm sure there is one already underway so you can meet others from your son's divsion or PIR date. If you have any questions or need some help, let me know.
