Congrats on your daughter joining the Navy!! My son loves the AG rate. He is currently stationed in Yokosuka Japan. Growing up on the Gulf Coast with tracking hurricaines ever summer seemed to be a great fit!! Even more so after our house was destroyed in 2004 by Ivan. Michael is looking forward to C school next fall them completing his degree at MSU. MSU accepts all of his Navy training to credits so that is also wonderful for him. Boot camp will be difficult at times but she is being cared for and trained for her future!! Please feel free to contact me as you go through this phase of your Navy Mom life!! My email is AFKINGS@aol.com. Next will be her box of clothes. That caught me off guard so be ready for that!! Take care!! Annie
We've let Leah know from the beginning that she has our full support should she decide to pursue the military as opposed to college. My husband is exAir Force and will share his experiences with Leah when she asks. Her eyesight supposedly isn't good enough for the Air Force (no clue who told her that) so she dismissed that branch. And she didn't have much interest in Army or Marines either. She just seemed to gravitate towards the NAVY.
But like Amanda, a recruiter visited Leahs school and she took an ASVAB then, scoring 90. That was a Wednesday (10/22). Leah went to the recruiters office that same day after school to talk more. The next day (10/23) both of us parental units were at the recruiters office asking our own questions. By Friday (10/24) I was signing the papers allowing her to enlist via DEP. On Tuesday (10/28) she was at MEPS and was sworn in.
Her decision was based mostly on finances and the current economy. She did NOT want to enter into her adult years up to her eyeballs in debt with student loans. Since I was a single mother for so long, and her biological dad never paid a dime in child support I'm not in a financial position to help her pay for college. And the fact that she has a huge patriotic heart for our country this was an easy decision for her. She has no reservations about serving this country and is willing to do so proudly in order to pay back for her education.
So much seems to be in limbo right now. As it stands right now she's looking at an 8+ year contract. The first four years in school getting her degree and then another four years minimum on active duty. I wish we had specifics but we don't. But if the NROTC scholarship doesn't go through then I guess it's back to square one.
I've rambled enough. It's been a long day and my brain is mush.
Amanda's job title will be an AG (Aviation Aerographer's Mate). It deals with oceanography/meterology. It sounds like fun and a nice transition to the 'outside' world whenever she decides to go.
So the military is preping Leah to become an officer? Good for her! What made Leah decide to enlist in the Navy?
Amanda was undecided of what to do after h.s. graduation. Her dad and I suggested the Air Force but Amanda was uninterested. Then one day she was contacted by a Naval recruiter and tells us she has a meeting with him. Weird. Next thing we know is that she decided to enlist. Unexpected, but thrilled. I know basic will be difficult for her (she's a momma's/daddy's girl) and will probably be homesick. But I know she made a great decision and will be happy with it.
Leahs hair is long in this picture but much shorter now. She asked me again this morning if I would cut it for her. LOL, she said she trusts me to do it. We cut it up to her shoulders so that if it still needs to be shorter for b/c then it won't be such a shock. Hugs & Thanks to Amanda for her willingness to serve! And Bravo Zulu to you mom, for raising such an honorable young woman.
