From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:

Hi, you grew up right where we live! D graduated from BC in the summer. I went with his girlfriend to see it. I hope you can make it. It is a very emotional time. The base is amazing. All I can say, is plan on waiting a lot, there are a lot of families. Do you know what his job will be? My son chose Special Op's. He is a navigator on a RIB. They are pretty intense. He is on his first deployment. He is pretty happy. I was lucky, he was based in San Diego, so he came home every week end when he wasn't away for training. Hang in there. We are all in this together. When he graduates, he will know where he will be after that. Keep in touch!

Hi Colleen! It's nice to meet you! I'm so happy to hear that you have received your first letter. It gives me hope that I too will soon hear about my son.
I live in Michigan in the Detroit metro area. It's such a blessing to have a wonderful support system for us moms whom are missing their sons and daughters as I'm sure you would agree.
My son Brian is 22 years old. He signed up for the Navy at the beginning of this year, and has been in the Delayed Entry Program until he left for boot camp on the 4th of this month. When he first told me that he sighned up I cried. Brian said "mom don't cry, there is nothing here for me." He was right jobs are difficult to find, and school though was an option my son knew he lacked the structure in order to achieve. I know now as I did then that Brian had made a very wise decision, and was extremly proud of him in that direction he chose to go. Even with all that said, I miss him tearabley. It was extremly difficult to say goodbye to him the night we left him at the hotel. I find comfort knowing that he prepared himself as much as possible for what was to come, and with people like you and Barbara, and yes she is wonderful! Please keep in touch. I would love to talk to you more. Hang in there!

Dear Colleen,
Good for you, I know it wasn't easy holding back tears. Save them for the graduation! HAH! Beside homesick, how did he sound?
I know you were relieved. !
I still have trouble, when I talk to my Kim and saying Goodbye on the phone, I miss the fact of hugging her.

I can't understand with the medical information, I thought all that info would be in the computer when the kids enlist and have all their other papers with them. Lately I 've been reading about security clearance, while the recruits are already in Boot Camp. This must new, I don't remember any of that last year, when Kim was in Boot Camp.

The Navy is always changing something. Just recently they changed the Form letter and added the graduation info. All this time the graduation package was mailed the fourth week.

Let me get going Stay well, and please stay in touch.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara

Dear Colleen,
How are you today? I just checked the calender, this is the first time I have ever heard of an "exception" HAHHA! That Friday is New Years's Eve. That would make sense, and the Friday before that is Christmas.

Last year, graduation was on Christmas Eve. I remember that, I knew some moms that told me, of their child graduating that day.. That's my birthday, so I do remember that! HHA!
This is a first for me! HAHA! So it's Wednesday this year.
Don't book anything yet. When your son tells you that he'll be doing Battlestantion, that's usual a week prior to the graduation date. Then reserve a room and plane tickets.

By the time Battlestation is on the agenda, you know your son passed everything else.
That test Battlestation, the recruits enjoy. They usaly always pass that. In the one case maybe one recruit doesn't, they get re-tested before graduation.

As a rule, the recruits usualy all do graduate, the Navy wants them to pass. But right now, it is premature for you to reserve a room or buy the tickets. Your best bet is to wait for Battlestation. So the week before graduation, reserve the room. There's a lot hotels in the area. I never heard of anyone having any problems with finding a hotel.

When you do book your airline tickets, the airport there is O'Hara. You willl need a car, everything is far apart.

What ashame, I hate with that happens, one recrutis does something, they get extra workout to do.

His letter was sad. Almost always, I do have moms tell me that. My daughter Kim 's first letter was heartwrenching But the letters do get more uplifting.

Please stay in touch, don't hesitate to write.
Take care and God bless,
Barbara
