Mary, Proud Mom of Nick said… - Hi Colleen, seen your note about your son wanting to go active, good luck with that my nephew is a reservist too. Hit his one year anniversary last month and we are exhausted trying to find a way to go enlisted. Everyone says when his current contract is OVER! He's a frusrated - no jobs, etc. Good luck to your son.

Lelia (Ben's Mom) said… - Ben is enroute to California at this time - the flight was delayed and he will miss connecting flight to Oxnard (hope I spelled that right) - he said that he will have to wait on later flight. I had to look up time zones today - I'm all confused on the differences between California and here - i guess that it is 3 hours. He said only 2 others from his boot camp group were with him. I told him he could throw out that scarf, gloves, and earmuffs that he's had to wear all winter at GL.

- Colleen - we got through PIR this past Friday and he flies to Port Huemene this Wed. He also is only a reservist, but told us this past weekend that he wants to go active - I assume that this is going to be a problem??????

- wow! that sounds great - my son will love that - After spending the last two months in the snow and below 0 temp. in Chicago I think that he will really enjoy some sunshine and warm temps.

- Colleen - my son graduates from boot camp on 2/13 and he is going to Port Hueneme - I don't know anything about it - do you think that he will like it there? - i've almost made it though the 8 weeks of BC and now I've got to start with 12 weeks of something different.........

I am not going to be in Calif when my son gets back....I have learned over the years that its a period of adjustment for him and his wife and kids so I let them have that time and I try and come a month or two after he has gotten home. I am sure if we lived a bit closer It would not be such a big deal to be there just to see him come in...get that hug and go home but NY to Calif does not allow that...nor does my credit card. How is your son doing? My son tells me once he is back he has a lot of schooling to get to...1-2 months at one place, 3 months someplace else so even after 6 years as a Seabee there is still a lot of training going on. Angie F.- WA: HM mom said… - Hi Colleen, just wanted to follow up on your Reserve group post. Your son will have a chance to talk to a Navy Career counselor after he completes "A' school and reports in to his home duty station. That's where he can indicate his desire to make the switch to Active Duty status. Warn him though, that at least according to 2 "in the know" sources here on N4Ms I have talked to, including a Career Counselor, that process could take up to 2 years! Hope he has an idea what he would want to do in the meantime as he drills for one weekend monthly as a Reservist. There should be chances for temporary AD assignments, my son said you only get so many days a year to do those, can't remember how many at the moment. However, Seabees do seem to go overseas more often that other Reservists, so time will tell what Robbie will end up doing. Hang in there! Take care. :-)

- I was a single mom to 2 boys too and I know how hard it is when they leave home. My guys are 27 and 29 yrs old now and the Navy was the best choice for both of them.

- Please remember there are lots of spots Seabees deploy to...places we don't normally think of Romania, Bahamas, etc so keep postive and know your son will have all the training and confidence needed to do the job before he gets sent any where.
