Looking for moms from Michigan groups

I am a "New B Navy mom" from Capac Michigan, and am looking for any groups from the Metro area. Any suggestions about anything for me or my son who is getting ready to go to Great lakes on Jan 25th. I would really appreciate it. He signed on for AZ.

Blessings,
Sam

I am guessing it was getting close to the end of the month, they have quotas to meat, and they come up with all kinds of things to make that mark. It stinks. There are a few god recruiters , but from what I see, they are few and far between. I would move heaven and earth to get him something other than AZ. really. ask to speack to a career councilor and find out what jobs he's able to get have high abilty to move up the pay scale if he passes the tests.

Sam,
I read the comments below from Kelley, and I will tell you my son had no problems with Meridian at all. He was only there for two months so it was ok. Once they can get off base, they go to the mall to eat or to the movies.
One thing I will tell you about the AZ rate--atleast I never seemed to worry about him in an actual war zone. You might have your son research bases and just see where he might want to end up. Tell him that if he is first in his class, he will have the first option to pick his base from those available. Higher in the class, better the pick. There are so many options to consider. Mine is at at an air station in the desert of california, where other are in Florida, some east coast, some on in Japan. Just something to talk about. I do think mine would have liked it better had he not been with a training squadron--to tell him to consider that as well. Just curious, how old is your son. My was a little older that some and "stuff" just didn't bother him as much as it did the ones right out of high school. Please feel free to keep in contact with more questions.
Have a Blessed Thanksgiving.

Hey sam, by harder on them in Meridian I mean 1) vs. other bases/a-school's across the country and 2) they are harder on the rate of AZ itself vs. the other rates (and all AZ's go to a-school in Meridian so.... basically thats it. Why are the harder on AZ'S? Not really sure exactly, just they are. You can ask anyone at Meridian, the YN's, PS's and the AZ's themselves etc... they will say the same thing. Now..the reason Meridian itself is so strict is due to (from what I have been told by numerous people including my son) the fact that a few years ago some sailors went into town and committed some horrendous crimes, I wont mention what but use your imagination. The civilians in Meridian do NOT like the sailors and I think Meridian tries there best to safeguard everyone by keeping the sailors under lock and key as much as possible.

Hope that helps - you can ask any of the other AZ mom's as well and they will give you their opinions which may vary slightly but one thing they will all confirm is that Meridian sucks!!!! However, it is a 'phase' of their Navy career and will pass quickly (tho it will seem to last forever while they are there).

Anything else I can help with just let me know!!!!

Sam,
I saw that you made it to the AZ mom site but looks like you didn't get the positive response I was hoping you might find. If you son goes in knowing what to expect and still is ok with that kind of work, then I think he will do fine. What does he think about all the mom comments?

Sam,
One thing I will tell you is that after my son left the A school in Mississippi, it seemed to back up there. Eric only waited about 2 weeks to start classes, but I know other after him waited months. The school itself wasn't difficult and if you don't live far, you can visit after a couple of weeks. We did not visit as we figured he wasn't going to be there long enough and he did come home after A school before he went to his duty station. There is a Navy Moms group for AZ--I think it is called Moms of Aviation Administors AZ. If that is not exactly right, I hope it will get you there. There was also one labeled under Sailors in Meridian, Missisippi.
Best of luck to you son. Sounds like he will do great.--P.s. Be sure to attend the boot camp graduation if at all possible.!!

Sam, Me again, I see that your son has not actually left yet. So I guess let me ask, has he researched the AZ job, or was this just something that was open? I will say that if it is not what he wants to be doing--change now before he goes!!

Sam,
I am really hesitant as to how to respond to your question as to how my son likes his job as AZ. Basically, I don't think the is the right job for him. Let me give you a little background. My son is a very hands on, mechanic type person and this is an office job. He got some not so good information from the recruiter saying he could always change once he got to his duty station--true--but it is after 2 years you can ask for a change. On the other hand, he is a very hard worker and has done quite well--already advanced to E4 and should test again in April. Basically, the office part is just not for him. With that all said--I know other moms whose sons really love this job. Now let me ask--where is your son stationed, and is he liking his AZ work?

No a cell is fine, that is how Roddy called me was a cell!!
I sent out a letter of yesterday and one today...When I went to the post office I picked up some prestanped envelopes and pre posted post cards to send to him...since he isn't much of a letter writer... Also a page of post card stamps to send a little something since my time is so tight.

Blessings to you dear...talk to you soon...Tanao

Hi justmeSam!!!
Welcome to the next journey in our lives and our childrens lives.... I'm so sorry I haven't been able to respond sooner to you. My life is a busy one without all of this!! My son Roddy checked in to GL 11/10. I did opt to watch him get sworn in for active duty @ MEPS on the 9th... It was a hurry up and wait but, I was able to wait with other Navy Families waiting to see the ceremony as well... That is where you can meet some moms-families that are in your area as well.

I received Roddy's box actually on Thursday, only 2 days after he arrived. with all I guess his copies of enlistment paperwork, his clothes that he wore when he left and his cell phone. (one thing I did do was order Roddy a Naval or Sailor Bible, had his name embossed in it to take with him) I did that way back in February when he joined. Anyway I guess the saddest thing with the box was that we kept the bible in the box that it came in and has put some pictures, addresses, stamps etc. in an envelope. well when he packed everything the envelope stuck in the box and it came back with his clothes... :'( So he doesn't have at least pics to look at of the family...
I don't know if I have answered any questions for you, but I am glad you are here and I look forward to keeping in touch. I am on the November leaving site (the smaller group) you can watch how it goes by following that as well. quite honestly I get kind of lost there is so much to look at...

Blessings to you and Tommy.. Tanao
