I hope her first duty weekend goes well. As I have told you before, my son has loved all of his. His thing is to "step out of your comfort zone and get to know as many people as you can". That has worked for him so far. Glad she wore the "right" uni…

That is a very good question. Or at least to mom's like me who's kid is very vague about what he says is "just all kinds of stuff. we were so busy and nonstop". But he says he is never bored. He is Corpsman and semi-sorta seems to be using his train…

I have to comment on the treating the enlistee's like crap. I have been around a lot of enlistees in all branches of the service, and have never heard one say that. I think it is a given that they are new and will screw up. And when they do, MUCH no…

Judy, now that I think about it, my son was in A school when Christmas rolled around so I assume that is why he got the holidays off. He did miss Thanksgiving and he and some of the other guys were adopted by a family for that day. He had a great ti…

I didn't hear too much from my son while in A school. He had his cell phone of course, but he stayed so busy w/ studying that our conversations were brief and not very often. He was at the "school house" nearly every night. On occassion he would cal…

Army is not offering bonuses for for Active to re-up right now, either. That is where they usually make their big bucks. My son-in-law got a huge chunk of change last time he re-upped while stationed in Iraq. Navy has not had a high demand because t…

She will be flying out of O'Hara tomorrow at 4pm. Do you know when your son first checked in with his unit what it all involved. I am just trying to figure out how long it will take. I was told someone would be there 24/7. We do know that there are two corpsmen units there and they are soon to be on the active list again. So we are anxious for her to sign in to see what they have in store for her. She is anxious to get back to college.

Hi Kathy~Amber is reserves. She is graduating corpsmen school tomorrow and will be home tomorrow evening. We are going to go ahead and see if she can sign in when she arrives. The reserve unit is right next door to the airport. So instead of driving home and then having to drive 1 1/2 hours back the next day I hope that she can sign in. I just don't know what is all involved with signing in. Amber does not have a clue either.

Hi Again. The site CAN be very confusing! lol Just to clarify, the only Reservists only forum on N4Ms is our Reserve Moms Group. Most everyone else you encounter on site is likely to have an Active Duty Sailor, but not all. However, that doesn't preclude Reservist Moms from joining any and all other Groups, especially those such as their own State, favorite hobbies or their Sailors' Rating. The information shared and comments posted help everyone. So, by all means, go join the Corpsman Group as well as the one for your State. Take my friend Brenda Sue up on her offer below! Might be missing out on some fun N4Ms Texas style BBQ/Events and great local connections with Moms who live near you. :) Chat with you soon.

Hey Kathy, I wouldn't be so sure about your son just being a paper pusher on his first time through! Since you still haven't gone and joined the Corpsman Moms Group, you missed a fun and interesting discussion on the subject of practice time/experience. Put the link I posted to you below into your browser and go back to about page 21 (now) or 22 (by tomorrow), start reading to the present. That's about 2 weeks worth, active Group! Here's an excerpt from a full comment/story I left around page 20:

"Sooo, when he got sent to his duty station, less than a month after graduation, what did they ask him to do the very first weekend...you got it, vitals and blood draws. He said they watched him for a short time, then left him to pretty much run things the rest of the day and weekend. He said it was weird, after having the instructors be so hands on at "A" school, literally, sometimes they would guide the students hands step by step! The training paid off, he scored well on tests and apparently remembered what he was taught, even though he didn't get much real life practice." :)

Let me know how it goes for your son!

Hi Kathy, got your message to the whole Reserve Group. Don't worry about sending it to the wrong place or doing things wrong. We all learn as we go on here and the Moms patiently help each other find their way around. =)

As far as changing from Reserves to Active, my son-also a Corpsman- is pursuing that process currently. It's not easy or quick! Here's a link to a prior discussion about that subject. You will have to cut and paste the long link into your browser. Both a Recruiter and Hoppi, a Command Career Counselor responded:

http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/switching-from-reserve-to?x=1&id=1971797%3ATopic%3A1199827&page=1#comments

Let me know if you find anything else out. Navy Parent, another "in the know" adviser on site reminded me that switching essentially leaves a "hole" in the command, which had to be filled, so that can influence a Commanders decision. No matter what, your son will not be able to do/start anything until he reports in to his drill station. He'll work with a career counselor too. Welcome aboard N4Ms. Keep in touch and Bravo Zulu to Jacob on his successful completion of Corps school! Something to be very proud of!! :D

Oh, here's another Group you definitely should join (just to learn more about the Corpsman rating) even though your son, like mine, will probably not go on to FMTB 8404 training next like many of his classmates. Take care. :-)
