My family sends prayers of grief and healing to the family of the young sailor killed in Pensacola Thursday. It could easily have been any one of our children. She graduated with my son in Great Lakes. I am anxiously awaiting his phone call tonite a…

Hi everyone - I think the issue for EllenE is that the recruiter didn't discuss options for him. Some recruiters (and certainly they are in the minority) don't put the recruit's best interests first. A good recruiter will point him to all options an…

Profile Information

About me:
I am a proud Navy veteran Air Traffic Controller who served in the first Gulf War, and have lived in Maine since my retirement in 1992. I work full-time as a veterinary receptionist and live with my husband, our 19-year old son, and our two Shiba Inus, Torii and Yogi. I enjoy cycling, movies and movie trivia, word puzzles and Sudokus, and writing. My 22-year old, Keith, Passed-in-Review 8/14/09 and is currently waiting to "class up" for AT-I "A" school in Pensacola. He is doing collateral duty at the Naval Aviation Museum in the meantime.
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
discipline, pride in a job well-done, and that you are held to the same standards as the person sitting next to you (unlike the civilian sector with its "good 'ol boy" network).
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Happy to be a new member!

Ahoy everyone! I feel a little strange joining a support group, when I am, myself, retired Navy! It was 25 years ago this November that I shipped out to boot camp in Orlando, and was named RCPO of my company! Now here I am, watching my first-born go off to Great Lakes and be selected as RCPO himself! I am so proud - he was pretty much pre-destined to join the Navy, with a retired mom and a Master Chief AC (air traffic controller) dad. I have to admit - he was very prepared for recruit training; between his parents telling years of sea stories, and the fabulous, award-winning recruiting command here in Maine, the kid knew what to expect better than most. He's a little older than most recruits, 22, and has 2 years of college under his belt. That will help him advance quicker, since he's an E-3 going in.

After boot camp, he will attend AT "A' school in Pensacola for 6 months. It's ironic, since he and his brother were both born at the NavHosp there! I was stationed at NAS Whiting Field in Milton for 5 1/2 years, and we transferred out when Keith was not quite 4 years old. He hasn't been back since, so this will be fun for him!

I joined Navy for Moms to find out specifics about the "new" Navy and what to expect regarding travel to/from Great Lakes for graduation. I've already learned a plethora of info - we plan to fly into Milwaukee and stay at the Navy Lodge, on the advice of several posts on this site. It's actually saving us almost $100 per family member in airfare to go into Milwaukee instead of O'Hare. And since I am a retiree, we have the option to stay at the Navy Lodge on base. This will make attending PIR very convenient. My husband Tony, younger son Kevin, and Keith's girlfriend Emily will be coming to GL with me. We are hoping Keith's father, the Master Chief, will be able to fly in to Great Lakes as well. It will be a proud moment for all of us.

hi jan...
did you get a call yesterday? dylan called and sounded great. he did say they were down to 75 guys and thot more would be leaving. it sounds like a rough group. it frustrates dylan. i think keith has his hands full. he also said they have the toughest head guy (RDC??). i'll learn all this stuff at some point. lol. lots of extra pt and starting counts over!! he said some of the guys can't keep their mouths shut. i didn't know that was an option. said a lot of them have colds. let me know if you have any other news...have a great day.

hi jan...good to hear from you.
dylan's sailor pic was in honor of his grandpa, WWII navy. enlisted when he was 17. i saw the "dixie cup" at nordies and then had to have pics taken. still have that hat. i should get it out. bet it's smaller than his new one. i took the pic into his recruiting office and the guys loved it. want a copy for their board. lol.
our oldest daughter has lived outside Paris on & off for the past 5 or so years. she has never seen the tour. seems to always be in the states in july. does keith want to be stationed overseas at all?
got a letter yesterday. didn't say a lot about the div except food is great and making some friends. it had a lot of self reflection in it. good for him. he really likes it, but he expected to. he said he knows we are proud and he is proud of himself...that is sooooo great!!
