Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Be very supportive never make them more homesick than they already are , always listen, encourge, send letters, cards, food if allowed.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Our son is not one to call or email much, so you can imagine our surprise when he called from Tokyo Disneyland! He was there with three shipmates. Before he left, he upgraded the service on his Blackberry. Voice calls are still pretty expensive, but I'm pretty sure he has unlimited data. That gives him access to email and internet while he is ashore--just like home.

We visited our son in Hawaii last March. We were there for a week, but he had only a long weekend to spend with us. Still, we found an inexpensive hotel about a block from his apartment in Waikiki. It was clean, had a kitchenette, but there was a lot of noise from the street below. It's called the Holiday Surf Hotel.

O'Kane Ombudsman web page

When our son first joined the O'Kane, I emailed the ombudsman introducing myself. She put me on her list, and I receive updates about the ship and the Family Readiness Group.

Hi ma, was just thinking about you and your daughter, not to mention the turmoil you've been going through. How are things for you? With deployment coming up, have things gotten any better for your daughter?

My daughter is SK SA no Im not sure how to contact the ombudsman, even though I have older sons in before I wasnt informed about the ins and outs of things we seem to have available for our soldiers and family support so how can I contact the ombudsman? My daughter did not upgrade her fone but Im sure after she this she will do that. Thanks for all your help

I'm glad to hear your daughter is ready for the upcoming deployment. This will be our son's second, and he seems well prepared. During his most recent leave, he got scuba certified and upgraded his cell service to international. AFAIK, he still heads the Repair Division. What is your daughter's job? Have you contacted the ombudsman, so you'll get updates? I've found that very helpful.

We now have four in the O'Kane Ohana group. Have you joined yet?
