I know it will be all good. I think I will have my daughter look into going into the Sea Cadets to help prepare her. She wants to be a part of the band and so she has enlisted her music teacher to help her out with composing. She has marching skil...

My daughter talked with a recruiter last week and has made the decision to join. I have mixed emotions about this, but I am very proud of her and worried as well. She's only 17 and I am not ready.

If your daughter "lives" music like Danielle has, then this is the job for her. Danielle was involved in every band thing she could while in high school - she went to honor bands, she joined the symphony, she was in the pep band at the school as well as the local college, she performed in the pit during musicals, and was in the jazz band as well as the regular school band - we have done alot of band things in our last few years - now one more in school and he's in band too so tomorrow is the first of the band competitions we go too. Good luck to your daughter, any more questions, just ask!

Hello, I'll forward your message to my daughter - I am pretty sure her main piece she played she was able to have her music in front of her - but the scales you have to have memorized...The piece of music has to show your ability (range) of what you can play. Danielle auditioned the first time while in high school. That's when they told her to work on her sax playing - the tutor really worked with her on this. While she was working with the tutor, she decided to sign her papers and get into the DEP program - her recruiter told her that this would show she was serious about it but I know her playing had definitely improved as well. Hard to say if that helped or not. Danielle had to play prepared music on all three instruments.

Hi Mandy, I told Diane that I would see if Danielle would answer questions for you and your daughter. She is getting ready to go out on her first tour - she'll be gone for about 2 months. That will be different for us as we talk daily - even with her living in Japan. This is a great site to learn more about the Navy and ask questions. When Danielle first went in, we didn't know anyone else in the music program - other than the people she auditioned for. Since you are in CA, if your daughter does audition for the Navy music program, more than likely she'd audition in San Diego. I'll email you privately with an email address.
