We are in Calif and my son's drivers licence was going to expire last month in June. He has been in Great Lakes for over a year now. The Calif DMV said he still needed to renew, but once we explained he was active military, they said he needed to ...

Each state is different, what EVERYONE needs to do is check the DMV in their state.

Who in the USN told him that he didn't have to renew his license? Just because someone is in the USN doesn't mean they don't have to have a current license with the state.

My son was also informed by the Navy that he did not have to renew his driver's license; however about six months afterwards he was training to run the trucks that move the planes on the flight deck. When it came time for him to be tested (by the ...

That's kind of funny. Imagine the confusion for the cop if you are hypothetically 58y/o and get pulled over but you got your liscense and pic at 18 or 19y/o. lol With all the surgical enhancements that can be done. that would be one big mess.

Every state is different. Check out your state's DMV website, I would think every state has one now. Oh the convienence of the internet. You can probably get your answer there. I know in NY you can renew your liscense online.

Hi... I am in Michigan and my son's diver's license expired while he was stationed in Sicily. I called the Secretary of State's office and they said he could renew the next time he was home on leave with no penalty. He had no problems renewing and...

In Arizona licenses are issued to expire on your 65th birthday, which eliminates the issue of expiration while on active duty. If you can believe this, my son's license does not expire until 2051!!

You definitely should renew the license, either by mail, on-line or in person. Very important if he comes home on leave or decides to rent a car somewhere. Before my son left for boot camp, I had him sign a power of attorney form. I went to DMV an...

Here in Texas, you don't have to renew - your military id is sufficient to show if you are pulled over while driving. Hubby is a deputy sheriff and verified this. I thought my son was wrong but Hubby said he's right. I would do whatever your State...

Erik on the USN Asheville, submarine stationed out of San Diego. We'll be going for a visit in September, can't wait! I get to see the inside of his sub! Right now he is in CT going through some specialized training. Ryan is in the Air Force and stationed in Germany...haven't seen him in over a year...hoping to go there next year. Hope Matthew is doing well!
Hugs,
Jackie

I don't know if you got the answer to your question, but i was at the recruiter's yesterday with my youngest son (that will make 3 in the Navy for me) the recruiter said as long as you are active duty military and stationed outside of your home state you don't have to worry about your license. Just show your military id if stopped because you have up tp 180 days after your discharge to renew it.
Hope this helps! It was a good question and since my daughter is in Japan it was a question I was wondering about too.

Welcome aboard, mironh. We are glad you are here. Please thank your son/daughter for choosing to serve our country. I wish him/her blessings, success and happiness throughout his/her navy path. My son is in A school. He is signed as CTT-SN. We miss him dearly, but are proud of his choosing to serve. What will your son/daughter be doing with the Navy? If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm glad you joined and look forward to hearing more about you & your Sailor.

Usually if they are active duty in the military they are not required to renew their license. My daughter just renewed hers only only because she was home on leave. You'll probably have to contact the MI DMV to inquire about this. There is a group here for mom's w/ Sailor's aboard the USS Bush.
