I never thought I would have two sons in the military. Fortunately, the oldest is the only one currently in BUDS at this time. My youngest will go to basic next summer. I have had time getting used to the possibility of both of them some day being SEALs. I look at it in terms of what they want to do with their lives. They both feel a strong sense of duty to their country and feel vey passionate about serving. It is not about me. This is their dream and I ultimately want what will make them happy and I want to be supportive. I am happy that they both found something that they want to do. So many young people do not know what they would like to do with their lives. Am I scared--of course. I can only think about the dangers of it all in very small increments--plus I pray a lot!
After he rang the bell he was in limbo for quite some time. He had no other job or contract as he went in on a SEAL contract. So my son had to pick another job and sign a new contract. He picked rescue swimmer. Before he went to Florida for this school, he basically sat around and did nothing which is very sad as it gives them time to think about their decision. They have to wait two years before trying for SEAL again which will probably mean signing another contract.
My son was told he needed the surgery and he had no choice. Personally he would have loved to wait for the surgery and begin BUDS when he was scheduled. He feels the long wait to begin BUDS was his downfall although he really isn't sure. While healing they really don't encourage you do much. My son says he sees better now then when he had his contacts in but he still would have rather waited but he had no choice.
I will be happy to answer any question you have if I can. Kimandtheboys is a fountain of knowledge so reach out to her too.
Enjoy the day!

My son rang the bell. To this day he doesn't understand why he did it. He said it was like an out of body experience he had no intentions for quitting, he loved it. He took it badly but he finally accepted what happened. He just completed A school and will be going to VA. He is counting the days till he can try for SEAL again (you have to wait 2 years before trying again). He lives for the day he becomes a SEAL, he will make it the next time.
Good luck to your son, let me know how he does, tell him to stay focused, the team is everything the pain temporary. God bless him and all the sailors, HOOYAH!
