March Is Women's History Month!

Hello N4M Members!

As some of you may (or may not) already know, March is Women’s History Month! In fact, the 8th of March is actually International Women’s Day. In the spirit of the “holiday”, I wanted to pass along a few facts about women in the Navy that I found.

October 24, 1978, marks the first day active-duty women were assigned to ships. It wasn’t until 1993 that they were able to serve in combat ships and… Continue

Basics of Basic Training

I posted this in a thread on a forum, and have received several kind words about my post. I thought I would put it in a blog where it could be easily found. Thank you for the support!

I went to boot camp ages ago, but the basics of basic don't change.

1. Bring your sense of humor. Boot camp can be surreal and absurd, enjoy it. Imagine how you'd laugh if you saw what is happening to you in a movie.

2. Listen, listen, listen. One of the things you are… Continue

Good News Son's Congressional Nomination!!

Wow, it's finally here in hard copy form! The official letter from our congressman nominating my son to 2 service academies! It's beautiful (suitable for framing, hmmm) printed on ivory bond paper and with a real signature at the bottom instead of one of those signature stamps. I am grateful to the Lord and continue to pray that my son will receive an appointment to the Naval Academy as we continue to wait. What an exciting time in our… Continue

Another Patriot Guard Rider event

So instead of driving to Grinnell last night in the snow, my husband and I went to the QC Flames hockey game with the Patriot Guard Riders. The president of Marine Moms who is also a member of PGR didn't know that we were all in on a big surprise for her birthday. The PGR held flags in the arena aisles (we do this occasionally), the Marine color guard presented the colors. The PGR ride captain, the Marine Mom and I (as Navy Families rep) followed them in. A school group sang the anthem. Then… Continue

Where in the world is "Sailor/Patrick on a Stick"??

OK...let me start off with a little backround..

Ok sometime last year a group of Navyformoms...Moms...landed in NYC

When we got to NYC, a "Texas Navy Mom" had took all our sailor pictures and put them on a "stick"

But one"Alabama Navy Mom" had already had her "sailor/Patrick on a stick" so..

"A" Navy mom carefully placed the "Patrick/sailor on a stick" in the hotel window so that the "sailor" could get a

great view of the NYC skyline.

After MUCH fun was had in… Continue

The First Letter

Last week a received an informational generic type letter from a Commander. Corey was able to write a couple of lines but I still have been worrying so much about him. Today was a great day! I grab the mail and there is a letter from my sailor, Corey!!! The First Letter... It was like he was sitting next to me and we were having one of our talks. I feel so much better. I just needed to hear from HIM that he was doing alright. He even had some jokes thrown in. I have no desire to ever fly so he… Continue

getting ready to let go

I am still wrestling with the idea that he is going into the Navy and leaving home. I am so proud of him but in the same breath I am worried about surviving without him. I am a single mom so he is the "man" of the house and is the fixer of problems around here. He is my rock and my strength. He has this amazing way of brighting up my day regardless of how bad it is. His smile is so contagious and I already miss it. I see it every day but know that in July I will see it no more. I know he will… Continue
