What a crazy 24 hours!

My son was supposed to ship out mid-January, 2018, but he got a call from his Section Chief on Monday telling him he was on stand-by to ship out on Wednesday . . . this Wednesday!  Then he got the call about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday that he needed to be at the recruiter's office (about 30 miles away) and then to the hotel (about another 30 miles away) by 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night.  My son called me at work, I said "Bye!" to my very understanding bosses and co-workers, texted my husband (a teacher…

Our PIR experience - Nov. 22nd PART TWO

I'm adding things I forgot to mention in my first post.

Our hotel in Waukegan had a restaurant/bar inside, but I never went in. The hotel also had a small room next to the check-in with restaurant pamphlets, vending machines, and a computer and printer. We only stayed one night. My daughter's friend was staying in Gurnee. It wasn't that much further, but the hotel was MUCH nicer: newer beds, continental breakfast, ELEVATOR! ;)

There were also many more places to go and see in…

Our PIR experience - Nov. 22nd

Hi everyone.

I decided to write out our experience in case it can help anyone.

We booked a hotel through some online booking service...my oldest daughter did it so I can't remember which one. I'll update if I can. It was a hotel in Waukegan and it didn't seem too bad.

I booked the flight through sato. We flew Southwest to Midway because it doesn't fly into O'Hare. I suggest you do this the soonest possible, I wasn't able to due to my other daughter's school…

Graduation advise

Our son graduates in January.  We have looked for plane tickets and rooms, but keep getting information saying one thing and then another.  Where do I get the "ticket" is it mailed or do I pick it up? Is it easier to rent a car and get on base or use the shuttle? Can our son ride back to the hotel in the shuttle? if anyone can help with questions I would appreciate it so much.

Positive thinking

I know how difficult this is for us all as parents this is the first Thanksgiving that I will not have my son at our table. I do not mean to be on the down side but with this mission that he is on it does have it’s up and downs for both him and I. I wake up every day at 4am to wait for that phone call from my boy to hear about his day. And he sounds good and the best part out of our conversations is him telling me how much he loves and misses us. Thank goodness for technology because I would be… Continue

Rocky

my son arrived at BC on 10/24/2017, I did receive a call that evening.  but no call since, I miss him so much it hurts. But like i have been reading, no call is good news.  that you all for everything you post, it gives me some sort of peace and relief to my anxiety.

couple of BC general questions

Would anyone know the answers to these random questions?

  1. Are recruits allowed to bring contacts, saline solution & cases to BC for pictures & PIR?
  2. Do you know how much will be deducted in BC for uniforms (Male/Female)? I'm assuming they won't get all their uniforms at BC.
  3. Will they have footwear for showers or do they bring them?
  4. Will the recruit put the addresses on The Box and Form Letter or does the mailing address for these 2 items come…

Graduation from Boot Camp for Son who leaves December 13, 2017

Hi,

Does anyone know when this class of students will graduate boot camp? I'd love to attend, but need to make arrangements ASAP because I am also leaving to teach in China in February and need to make flight arrangements.

Thank you,

Dawnelle

Thanksgiving at Great Lakes, 1980

Since that time of year is nearly here, I thought I'd bump this up.

One year in Great Lakes, there we were, stuck in the barracks. One of the guys had family in the area, his mom told him he could bring a few of us home. He and I were dating, his buddy was dating my roomie, and three of his friends were stuck at Glakes for the holiday. We all had liberty for the entire weekend so it was decide that we'd all go to his place for dinner.

The problem? The only car we had to…
