I know that one of my big questions was where to stay while at PIR. You feel kind of rushed, and you are booking your motel sight unseen. After being in the great lakes area, I would highly recommend staying in Gurnee. It is so close to the base, the mall is right there and there are a million places to eat and nice hotels.
