932s of '08...still going strong! :D

Interacting as I do with many new Navy/ BC Moms, I am surprised to see some of them fade away off site after they have become better informed and "survived" the grueling 8 weeks of Boot Camp. Once they are back in communication with their new Sailor, they seem to feel they have no further need of N4Ms and the connections here. To each her own, but I think they don't know how much they could be missing!!! I just observed my one year anniversary of being on site May 15th. Out of curiosity today,… Continue

Navy training-and a Mom's support-pays off

Just wanted to share that I received a phone call from my Sailor. He had taken the Petty Officer 3rd Class test at the beginning of the year. He hadn't studied at all, figured it would be a good practice run. There is so much info, including some specific to certain specialties within his Rating, he really didn't think he would pass on the first try. As of this month, he has only one year in the Navy, so he thought he was somewhat "ahead of schedule". He wasn't stressing about a possible promoti… Continue

One Year Ago ...

I knew little to nothing about the Navy, but found myself getting ready to send (launch) my eldest son into a life in the Military, something he'd talked of doing for a while. I knew my firstborn was a warrior at heart, and had done all he could to prepare, but nothing and no one can really completely prepare a Mother for THE day and this experience. I have already blogged last summer about dropping him off at the Recruiters office. (Check it out, it's titled "Looking Back".) After how long BC s… Continue

Still his Anchor-A tale of 21st century communication and connection with my now 21 year old Sailor.

A week ago I left home. Not permanently of course. After a too long, dreary and snowy winter, I really needed a change of scenery. My hubby was going to be out of town on business for a few days and the younger three kids are homeschooled, so I opted them out of WASL week (state testing) here in WA and off we went, late on a Sunday afternoon, across the State. Did I mention that I knew beforehand of a certain Ship coming home to Everett (on 4/21) and that some of my N4M friends on the site, spe… Continue

In his own words: Stories from Boot Camp-Part three (Pomp, Praise and Protocol)

Here is the final installation of my three part peek into the weeks of Boot Camp training as seen through my now Sailors eyes. By half way through he'd learned that if he wrote a little bit every night after Taps (o.k., technically a no-no, but I wasn't complaining) he could get more detail in and the letters then became longer. Sometimes I was teary eyed due to missing him or the swelling of the pride in my heart, other times because I was practically in convulsions laughing at something he had… Continue

In his own words: (Funny) Stories from Boot Camp-Part Two (PB and DB)

As promised, I will continue my walk down memory lane, detailing a few excerpts from my then recruits letters. I'm so glad he took the time to write them down. I have a horrible memory! I was also able to share them with my fellow Division Moms. :) It lifted their spirits on hard days, especially when we were waiting expectantly for that call or next letter. The following was written on a Sunday, Day 11, the last day of his Processing Week. He was anticipating the actual official start of Boot C… Continue

In his own words: Stories from Boot Camp-Part one

My last couple of Blogs have dealt with our adjustments to our sons and daughters growing up, leaving home and/or joining the Navy. Admittedly, they have been rather long, o.k wordy, but hopefully thought provoking, enjoyable and encouraging. I thought I would continue the journey today, only this time on a slightly lighter note. One of the hardest things as a Boot Camp Mom is the WAITING, especially for letters and phone calls!!! I did not know it would be almost 3 weeks until I'd receive both.… Continue

Looking back

I have been chatting with and reading posts from many new BC Moms. One had to drop one child off to a first day of school and then go drop her son off at MEPs- wow, hard day! It has made me wander down memory lane a bit, to the times though out the years when I have had to hand my Sailor son over literally, to a new school, teacher, or coach, or figuratively, to a new stage of life-or into God's hands. I recall my Mother telling the story of how my little brother, then age 3, could not wait for… Continue

An Open Palm

One of the hardest things as a Mom is knowing when to release your grasp and let your child spread his wings. From the moment they arrive, we snuggle them close, nurse them, protect them fiercely, intercede, advocate, sacrifice and generally go over the top to make sure they have everything they need to be happy, safe and successful. It is not a job for the faint of heart. Often, we find ourselves holding onto them with clenched fists, the world beyond our safe harbor can be such a cruel and sca… Continue

Things I've learned as a Navy Mom (Sofar)

I was updating my profile today and realized I had learned so much through the Boot Camp experience and now as “A” school progresses- much of it from other Moms here- that I had tripled my original list! I often find myself repeating advise to newbies and wished to put it somewhere easy for them to find, for whatever it’s worth. However, it was really way too long to add in the profile space provided, so I decided to make it a blog instead. Please feel free to add any tips of your own, words of… Continue
