Anybody have answers about car insurance and registration

My son's PIR is Feb. 7, 2014 and he will be headed to the Charleston, SC area. I'm wondering if anyone can give me any info on car registration and insurance. Like: Does he need to register the car in SC or keep the registration in his home state (Georgia)? Does the insurance need to be for the state of SC or home state? I paid off his car and am trying to figure out what he will need to do for insurance and registration. Thanks for any help in this regard.

At some point, we signed the ownership of the car over to our son. He on his own got insurance thru USAA. He kept the CA registration when he was going thru school. Once he was assigned his port, he changed his registration to that state. Assuming you are going to continue to keep the ownership and registration in your name, you should call your current insurance company and inquire. Your registration should be good for SC but you might want to check their website. Hope this helps.

Thank you, I appreciate your help.

It's much easier to keep the car registered in your home state along with keeping your sailors drivers license in the home state.  That way when he moves it won't matter.  As for insurance I would recommend USAA or Geico.  When you move you just have to let the insurance company know where he is stationed at.  My sailor had 4 duty stations in his first 2 years.

I pretty much agree with what everyone here is saying.  My son was also in SC.   His car is registered in his name at our home address in CA and his license is still in CA.  Our insurance company (Wawanesa) doesn't cover in SC so he got a policy of his own thru USAA. They were very helpful....he just recently went to NY for his next school and he notified USAA that he moved and they changed the address for him.  Easy to do!

Thank you Jo1 and Barb. My son's wife is going to join him in Goose Creek (yes, nuke school) with his car. Does anyone know,, how soon she and their daughter can join him after he arrives there?

You should join the "Nuke Moms" group.  You can find lots of info there about what to expect in nuke school.  There's a couple of good discussions that will be helpful to you:  "Surviving Nuke School" and "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC".  And there's plenty of mom's on there who should be able to answer your questions for you or at least guide you in the right direction!  My sailor is single so I don't know the specifics on family joining, but I believe they will give him this info in BC.  I know my son had guys he PIR'd with that were married and they had time after BC & before A school started to go back home & get their families. (And these are nukes too.).  Good luck!

Barb, you retained ownership and kept registration of the car but he was able to get USAA insurance for himself? My question if for our younger son who is out of state. We would like to retain ownership and keep the car register in CA. But we would like him to get and pay for his own insurance. Did insurance include personal injury as well as liability?  I had always thought you had to have ownership of the car in order to get registration; furthermore, you had to have registration in order to get insurance.  Our sailor took care of everything on his own. No problems. Now, with our younger son, we need a fleet of admins to take care of his paper trail - if you get my drift. :(

I guess there are four separate items:

1. Car ownership

2. Car registration

3. Driver's license

4. Auto insurance.
