My son left for BC on May 8th...as of today, no form letter.  I see other families posting that they've received their letters and I am sure plans are underway for their PIR.  Why is my letter taking longer than others who left on the same day?  I'm upset and concerned.

Since it has been more than 2 weeks since your SR arrived at the RTC, call the recruiter and get the address and then go to Ship/Division--How it Works or http://bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.asp and double-check the address. You can get the PIR date for the division at http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.asp and then begin making plans. 07/03/2013 is the most likely PIR date since he arrived on a Wednesday, so join PIR 07/03/2013 TG 34 - 11 Divisions (247-256, and 934) (you can leave the group if he is in a different TG). If you receive a "real" letter without receiving the form letter, there is info in Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit in the paragraph above that will tell you what to do so that you will have the password and names on the Access List.

Is it possible that your recruit sent the letter to someone else? Sometimes if a recruit is moved to another division, such as to a 900 division, the form letter gets forgotten in the move. Sometimes it just takes a while to get the form letter--most have it in 2 weeks or less, but it has taken nearly 3 weeks for some for some reason. As I said above, it is a good idea to contact the recruiter at this point and get the address since it has been more than 2 weeks.

Do we have to receive the form letter an initiate the first letter to the recruit? Can they not write to us on their own before they get a letter from us?

Comment by lemonelephant on May 23, 2013 at 7:05pm

Your recruit probably had "holiday routine" for the first time on Sunday and was able to write then although it could be this Sunday for the first time if he had to wait on others to arrive the next week to fill the division, not as common for those arriving Wednesday, but it does happen. No, you do not have to wait for a letter from him to write to him; although we usually say wait for the form letter before sending a letter, in your case, since it has been more than 2 weeks, if you get the address from the recruiter and check it out as indicated above, then you can send letters to your recruit.

Thank you all for the advice.  I got my first call yesterday!  :)  He told me that he was in medical when the form letters were done.  He didn't elaborate and sounded great so I've got some peace just hearing his voice and knowing all is well.  I asked where he's at with it on a scale of 1-10 and said it's an 8.  He did admit to being a bit depressed in the beginning but has now made friends and feels a sense of brotherhood there. All is well and look forward to more calls.  He stated he will stay in Great Lakes for his A school and would be able to commute home (less than 50 miles) on weekends.  ???

Yes, he will be able to go home as long as home is within 50 miles of the TSC for LIberty once he phases up and can have off base Liberty (he does have off base Liberty PIR weekend and you can find out about that in PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend). The Phases for Liberty for GL are outlined in https://www.facebook.com/notes/training-support-center-tsc-great-la....  What will his rating (job/specialty) be? There are groups for most of the "A" Schools and/or ratings. (Be sure to check the comments on your profile page--"My Page.")
