Our son is doing MEPS in two steps.  He took ASVAB at MEPS a couple weeks ago and is scheduled for physical, career classification 2nd week in April.

Because he wanted to know ahead of time, he had his color vision tested this week.  Result was mild red/green impairment.  Doctor said good chance he will pass MEPS color vision exam, but he might not.

Doing a lot of research on rates.  Approx. two thirds of rates are not available to future sailors with color vision impairment.

Son is ranking all of the rates, based on his career interests and importantly, passing and not passing color vision test.  His list also includes only those rates he qualified for ASVAB-wise.

When he finishes the physical exam, and meets with the Navy Career Classifier, will he be able to use notes?  Can he fold a couple 4x6 index cards in his wallet to reference when he's talking with classifier?

Welcome DTown, I have to say my Son has a stigmatism in his eyes he passed test to be and take Whatever he wanted, it did stop him from becoming. a Navy seal because you need really good eyesight but he could be other trades, it stops them in a sense but not for all. Under forums click on that and there you can find info on all rates (jobs) he can make a choice on his score from asvabs. My son had scored really high so he had that choice. That was coming from Recruiters office. Hope that helps a bit, it was a little bumber for my son, but he made other choices.

Once your son arrives at BC, he can expect Navy to check his vision. Although he may be cleared as to level of color blind at MEPS, the Navy will makes its own assessment. If Navy determines the level disqualifies him from his designated rating, he will be assigned another from the openings currently available. It may be wise to select a rating where color blind, at any level, is not an issue rather than risk being assigned a rating with no choice. Have him weigh the options at this early stage.

I think it sounds like a good idea to have notes with him in his discussion with the recruiter. It shows he has researched and given thought to the matter.

Wanted to thank everyone for your help.  As an update, our son completed MEPS today.  Passed his physical, but did not pass Normal Color Proficiency (NCP).  He had two lists of ratings, one if he passed vision tests, one if he didn't.  Talked with classifier and was offered three ratings he qualified for, including his #1 choice -- Machinery Repairman (MR), which he took almost immediately.  Signed contract and was sworn in.  He's very excited and we are very proud of him.
