My daughter left July 25th for Great Lakes, Ill.  She was excited and nervous all at the same time.  I got the 10 second phone call from her stating she made it and that I will get a package within 3 weeks.  I wanted more time with her to see how things are going, is she doing ok. I told her I loved her and that we were proud of her.  She has been out of high school for almost one and half years, so she is exactly a baby, she is 19, but to me she will always be my baby.

The time just flew by in now time at all it was here, time for her to go, get sworn in again, and sent to the airport for a short time before going through security to get on the plane.  She has a dog, Dakota, a 10 pound Yorkie "Chubby" that I get to take care of now.  He keeps going into her room and back out again looking around and at the door.  He looks so sad, I feel bad for the poor little guy.

When my boyfriend and I found out that she was going into the Navy, we were both sooo surprised.  The news was not expected and came from left field.  Everyone that we told were like "What?" The main reason she is doing this to travel she wants to see the world.  Me I just want to keep her home and safe with me, but I know I can't do that.  She is  my one and only child, I am a single mother.  My boyfriend has been there for a long time, he loves her like she was his, which has been great and nice to have someone else to be there for me.

I am so proud of her, I know that she will do great at boot camp, I just can't wait to see her at graduation in her uniform.  I just miss her so much, I even miss her coming home at 1 or so in the am :) I am glad that I found this website to get the chance to talk with other moms that have gone through or are going through the same things as I am.

((hugs)) jkronaizl....I bet you are so proud and how can we not be when our "children" decide to be such exceptional adults.

Best wishes to your daughter and lots of hugs to you.

Isn't this site just awesome?!

My son decided on the Navy after researching all the branches and his main reason also, was to travel all over the world. It was unexpected for us too when he announced "I'm joining the Navy!" I found a paper from 5th grade where he made for a class project he had to describe himself, his likes, with his picture at the top...and one of the things on there is he wants to see China, I cried reading that- it is proudly displayed beside his Navy graduation picture and everytime I look at it I am reminded of all the kinds of WONDERFUL he is!! It's funny our kids give us little clues about their futures we just don't realize it at the time, then you come across a little memory and it gets you to thinking. Something else he treasured as a child was his world globe, he would look at that thing and name off different countries he wanted to see, now I know why... I never used to think too much about military persons when I passed them along the way, you notice them because they are in uniform, but now I instinctively take a few extra moments and feel very proud of them too. Once you become a part of that you really do think of it as "family".

Thank you for all the encouraging words and information.  I did get the box and just today I got the letter with the graduation date in the letter.  I do have a question though, she had to put 4 names on the lines for those attending the graduation ceremony.  Was she suppose to put my name on their or not?  She put other family members and my boyfriend on the list.  I was thinking about that.  I was hoping for a letter not a form, that she just filled in the blanks.  I am probably wanting too much.
