My baby came home for Christmas and while driving back to base received a traffic ticket in Illinois. The cop told her she had to come to court Jan 25th. She informed him she was in the military and showed her ID and told him she would not be able to make court cause she will be deployed but was willing to pay the ticket.. The cop said he didn't care an they don't make exceptions for Military. Now, she apologized and wants to pay the ticket, however there has not been  a lot of help. She said Navy Legal closed the door in her face and she is still waiting for her commander to call the court. I am upset that these people in the Navy who claim be there family an look out for each other would allow the possibility of one of its own to stand getting a FTA ( Failure to Appear) and possibly a arrest warrant being issued over a traffic ticket. The fact that this cop would show a disregard for military personnel and them being deployed, and their sacrifice is unimaginable to me. Wayne County Il. can't be that desperate for funds, cause you know there will be court cost on top of the ticket. I'm just sick about this.

By the way when my baby called the court they were no help either.

there is usually an address and phone number on the ticket. My husband has just called that number and paid the ticket. Send a check to the address if you can't get help. At least it shows you tried.

Have her look closely at her ticket to see what options she has. Some traffic tickets in Illinois require a court appearance. My daughter received one of those several years back due to a minor accident and her license was held until the court date. Some tickets can be paid without a court appearance prior to the court date by following the directions on the ticket. Wayne County does not offer an option of e-pay as some of the other counties in Illinois do.

Being able to willfully disobey the laws of any state is not a right that someone in the military has, so the officer did what officers do when a person chooses not to follow the law when he issued the traffic ticket; he did not "show a disregard for military personnel and them being deployed, and their sacrifice." Yes, officers can use officer discretion at times and issue a verbal or written warning rather than issuing a citation, but they are not compelled to do so and perhaps there is more to the story than you have received.

I truly appreciate the advice and I will try to get in touch with her. But to add to the info. She didn't intentionally break the law. She said when she realized how fast she was driving she slowed down. Her receiving a citation was not the issue. She probably deserved the ticket, but not the rest. Hopefully it's a lesson learned.

Just talk to her, she is getting it takin care of. Thanks again. she called police dept.  Ill an Officer Anderson helped her.

I, too, have found myself in receipt of a ticket when I realized I was speeding and began slowing down, but not before an officer noticed my speed. That did not negate the fact that I was not obeying the law and whether intentional or not, there were consequences for me as there are for her. I hope that she can pay her fine and get this taken care of so that she can get back to her duties without this hanging over her and weighing on her mind and yours.
