New to the site but learning something everyday!

My boyfriend Scott left on June 19th for basic. When he told me over a year ago he was considering the Navy I backed him up and supported him. When he finally decided to join and went through the process I was so proud of him, but realized how much I would miss him. We'll have been together for 3 years in July, and we spend nearly all of our time together so the last nearly two weeks have been a bit hard without him around and no contact. I can't wait to hear from him, and I plan on getting to his PIR however I can. I joined the site hoping to find others who are in the situation of supporting a loved one in the Navy. Pretty much I just have a ton of questions about dates and ideas about what else to expect. Until we hear from him we aren't sure about his graduation date he says maybe sometime in September though he left June 19th so we aren't sure), and I'm also confused as to when he can live off base (when he get's to one) because he wants me to go wherever he goes (though I know it will indeed be a while). Of course, I'm ready to go wherever he does so I'm working on learning everything I can that will help me be an even greater support to him. I know I didn't really ask much, but I guess I felt the need to at least reach out initially and go from there once the questions start flooding my mind. I miss him so much right now, but I figure the best I can do is learn all I can so I can make him a tenth of how proud I am of him. So here I am, hello!

Since your SR left on the 19th, PIR is most likely August 17, but it could also be August 10 if he was one of the last to fill his division.  Those with loved ones in the August 10 TG have received the form letter and many of those in the August 17 TG are starting to get them.

If you aren't married, then don't expect him to be able to live off base for awhile.  Those under E-4 or E-5 depending on the command must live in the barracks if they are unmarried.

Join, or at least check out, Girlfriends, Fiances, and Wives of Sailors, Boot Camp Mom's, PIR Reference Information, and New Members Stop Here.  When you know his PIR date and/or Division number, go to http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/groups-listed-by-pir-date and join the group for that.

Yes, he went in as an E3 and we were told he would need to be an E4 before he could live off base. Right now I'm expecting it to be a while regardless. Thank you for all the useful links though, it is much appreciated! Also, thank you very much for the other info about the PIR dates, if it ends up being mid August that would make my day. I will also keep an eye out for the form letter to get the rest of the information Thank you again!

At my Sailor's previous command, single Sailors were able to live in a house or apartment when they were E-4.  At his current command, they must live in the barracks until they are E-5.  He was very happy that he made E-5 before arriving since he has enjoyed the freedom of not living in the barracks for well over a year.

Oh wow, well thank you for that at least. Now I know it could depend where he is then. We guessed it would be a long time too. I'm not sure how long advancement takes, but I'm willing to wait for him absolutely. It helps that He encouraged me to join a two year program at school I've been interested in so hopefully that will eat up the majority of the time!

You are welcome.  Yes, stay busy and have your own interests so that you won't feel quite so lonely and isolated when you are apart.

Where will he be going to A School and/or what will his rating (job) be?

I believe he is going to Groton, CT for submarine school, he is SECF. So far he isn't sure how long it will be though because it can be three to ten months depending on which of the three categories he ends up being best in. Staying busy has been my middle name lately, it really helps. I've also been keeping a notebook that we talked about, basically writing one page every day to him and he gets it when we see each other at his PIR. That helps a lot too, and every night I get to remember his smile when I suggested it so even better. It's definitely hard but I prepared a lot beforehand.

It sounds like you and your future Sailor done a lot of thinking and talking this through and that will help you both as you go along on this journey.

Sometime between now and the end of BC, you may want to join one or more of these groups:  SECF - ET & FT & STS, Submarine Girlfriends, Fiancées, & Wives, GROTON, CT. SUBSCHOOL & "A" SCHOOL MOMS.  There are other groups out there as well and once he has his rating, you can check specifically for that.

Take care and blessings to you and yours.

Yes we spent nearly three years discussing military and the last couple of months discussing the Navy once he choose it. We are very close, which makes the absence so hard, so it was important to talk about it all and prepare. I'm just so proud of him and can't wait to hear from him. I really appreciate all of the links and information, this will be very helpful on this journey. Thanks again, and for the blessings, I pray you and yours are well in the coming time as well!
