My son will be leaving for orientation week in 3 weeks. What can he expect? what do they do? And what exactly happens at the Swesring Ceremony? Will we as parents be able to attend that portion of the day? What types of uniforms do they receive? Ad you can read, I'm pretty new to all of this. Any info is appreciated.

Hi & welcome!!

You might want to check the school's web site... i have 2 in NROTC & their school's site has a good NROTC link.  There is a lot on info on it regarding everything from Fr O week through commissioning.

At MU [my MIDN's school] the MIDN get khaki uniforms at FrO.  Parents are invited to the "Oath of Office" swearing in ceremony.  The parents are also invited to a brief orientation/question/answer time at the beginning of FrO.

As Carolyn said, it is different for every school.

Look through the posts or join the group http://www.navyformoms.com/group/rotc [NROTC] ... you might be able to find your answers there.

@ Carolyn: your description sounds like what I sort of thought it would be.  And, yes, my son has staying in shape throughout the summer.  When he got official word that he'd be in NROTC, he just bumped it up a notch.  there's always room for improvement, but at least he's on top of this portion (thank goodness).  Yes, he's Marine Option.  He'll be attending Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, Ca.

@ Jn/Jf Mom:  There isn't much on the school's website.  He'll be at a cross-town affiliate and it just refers us back to the school where all the training and such will be held.  There is a slight "mention" of a swearing in ceremony, a question/answer portion and a picnic - but no true details (time, location, length, etc.).   I've joined the NROTC group and have been searching through posts and such.  Much of what I found was boot camp related.  Thanks for your help.

ha ha -- yes!  we did get the list of things to bring.  :-)

San Diego is nice and really only about 2 hours away from our home.   MCRD, huh?  what a coincidence!

Thanks for the Gen Orders link and all the other info.

My daughter and all of her NJROTC friends ae all reporting for FrO in the next few weeks at Auburn, LSU, Southern, Jacksonville U, & Florida. Mine eports to Auburn on Monday (8-7-11). They will issue uniforms while parents have a Q&A with staff, then a little swearing in ceremony, then they're released for lunch w/ us. They report back and get on a bus for Ft Benning GA. They have a memory pack with chain of command and orders to the sentry and rates & ranks. They will be training @ Ft Benning for the week and return to the school the next Sat, when parents are invited back for a family picnic and a little awards ceremony. My daughter is a little apprehensive about the push ups but I know she'll do fine. Her FrO PT CDR is a self-professed P90X adict. Glad to find others in our boat!

Tsm1017 -My daughter is in Bravo. Her name is Randi. I got to talk to her for a while last night and she said things were going OK. She passed her 3rd and 2nd class swim quals. She was having some trouble with the running. Well, actually the walking for everyone else. She has really short legs (she's only 5'1") and she said the guys walk quickly everywhere and she has to run to keep up and is exhausted from that. She'll beat all of them in the sit and reach though! They were supposed to be shooting today and she was looking forward to that. She didn't do as well on the simulators yesterday as she had hoped, but she hasn't done much skeet or moving target shooting, so hopefully she'll do better today. It's almost over for them! Are you going to the picnic on Sat? Maybe we'll see you there. We'll be the family with all the little kids in tow (Randi is the oldest of 9).

Lori4629 yes! We plan on being at the picnic. I will have some younger ones in tow as well. :)
My son is Tyler and has mentioned NONE of the things you mentioned! Haha. I wonder if they are in the same company. He said they had been to about 15 briefings and ran to get to each in time and they ran to for chow.
PS Cheering for Randi in the sit and reach!

Heard from my "adopted" son last night who is doing Freshman O @ LSU. He says they are "getting yelled at, drilling, marching, getting yelled at, pt and getting yelled at." He loves it but is a bit jealous that his "sister" is getting to shoot and do the O course / Ldrship challenge course, rappelling, along with the yelling, drilling, marching & pt. They are both finished later today so I'm anxious to hear all the details. My daughter said they were taking an academic exam today and the two platoons were competing for the "golden boot" award.
