Hello! Welcome and congrats to your Son. I would advise you to spend as much time with him as possible before he leaves. My Son just graduated back in September and is now at "A" School. The thing that helped me was to write to him everyday! Everyone on this site was a God send as well. Lots of important information was shared that helped me make it through those eight weeks. Best Wishes to you both!

Can recruits take anything to BC with them?

Recruits should go with what they have on their backs, their cell phones, and not much else. (See Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....)

What will the first day be like at BC?

See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC and Ship/Division--How it Works.

How long is the "I'm here!" call and when will s/he be able to call again?

See Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

Here are some more things to read also. Hope this helps

My granddaughter pick the Navy and it was a total shock to me but she was in ROTC and I can tell you when she put that uniform on she turned into a different person. My daughter cried a lot too but when you get to graduation and she walks out in that Navy uniform you will be prouder than you can imagine. They are different. We took another girl along with us who none of her parents came to graduation and we had a great time with the girls after graduation and a lot that they wanted to do was sit around in our room and use their phones haha.

Well mother make sure he gets plenty of sleep before he goes because the first 72 hours at boot camp can be a real shock. When he lands at O'Hare he will have to turn his phone off when he gets to the USO  so tell him to call you when he lands in O'Hare and he can talk to you then and all the way up until he enters the Uso. Do not let him take any extra things that he does not need because they will make him send everything home. The only thing they get to keep their their wedding band.  I was shocked when I found out they took all the girls into the room put a box in front of them and said you have one minute to strip get everything off put it in the box is going home to your mom. I ask my granddaughter did that bother you and she said let's put it this way Grandma at this time nothing embarrasses me. Haha you will cry a lot for the first two weeks at least. His call home if it's like our granddaughters she was crying and she said I'm here I'm safe my clothing or coming home and I'll call in a couple weeks good bye.  You will wait quite awhile for their address and I think they purposely do this because they really make the first days which are called P days or processing days extremely busy and difficult because they are looking for those that are not going to make it. I think they sever ties with family so don't expect a letter for about 3 weeks. The first letter could tell you I made a mistake I should not be here I'd like to come home and then the second paragraph might tell you something they're doing or studying. Be prepared it's not Unusual they pretty much all sound the same in the beginning. Write to them everyday. You might start their letter the day they leave and date it and then just everyday continue on with the date and a few more lines because my granddaughter said it was wonderful at mail call to hear my name get called. Do not send him anything like musical cards are cards with glitter. Nothing that separates him out in any way. We got our granddaughter a musical birthday card and fortunately we did not send it because that would have been very bad very embarrassing and she would have gotten made fun of. Our granddaughter's first call home after about three weeks she cried the whole 7 minutes and you know what she looked radiant at graduation and now she is in A school in Texas and she is loving it. Mom you are going to make this. Stay on this site especially when you can connect once your girl is there with her division because you will make friends that are real Navy family
