When do Sailors get their orders? Do they go straight from their A or C school to their duty station? Are they allowed any leave time to go home and get ready to be relocated? I am hoping that my son gets orders for San Diego or even LA. It’s a big military town so maybe, but I know it’s a long shot.

Your soon to be Sailor will get his orders about 4 weeks before the end of "A" School (or "C" School if that immediately follows "A" School) or toward the end of training if he has additional training beyond "A" School. Most "A" Schools allow the Sailors to pick from the available billets based on their class ranking at the point that the billets are offered, so your Sailor needs to do the best he can. Sailors can usually take about 10 days of Leave after "A" School before reporting to their first duty station, but if your Sailor has additional training, that will take place first. He will be able to perform RAP duty with a recruiter and get credit for 5 days of unchargeable leave once he turns in the paperwork at his first duty station, so he will want to do that. See http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/100....

I see you have joined NUKE moms; you may also want to check out Nuke School Charleston and Nuke A School FAQ. You can check the comments there to see when the Sailors typically receive their orders. The Rating Information Card for NF can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/nukepower.pdf. Your Sailor will most likely fly out to "A" School the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend since PIR is coming up in 3 Fridays.

You mentioned in another comment that your SR flies out to Mississippi, so I'm a bit confused since Nukes have "A" School in South Carolina.

I joined Nuke Moms because my son was concidering it as a transfer after two years.  He went in as a SH because the day we were at MEPS their system went down so they couldn't do any back ground checks.  He was looking at Nuke and  CT, but they couldn't complete the assignment because of the system .  Being impatient he signed anyways and was told to request a transfer.  The process took so long that it wasn't complete by the time he shipped.  So SH it is.  His score was a 90 so I'm hopping within 2 years he can have the option to transfer to a position that might be a better option for him.  He's done very well and I was told he was going up for a postion within his squad so I hope that is a step closer to him being stationed in San Diego.  If not sky miles here I come.

Since your SR will go to "A" School for Ships Serviceman (SH)), join, or at least check out, SH (Ship's Serviceman) Moms and Others (it's a new group and not very active), Sailors attending A School in Meridian, Mississippi, and Meridian Mississippi A School family&friends. You will also want to check out NAS Meridian Facebook Page and NTTC Meridian Facebook Page. The Rating Information Card for SH can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/sh.pdf. Your Sailor will most likely fly out to "A" School the day after PIR. You can still see PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.
