Do look at the privatized housing, a lot of it is very nice, and none of it is actually on base.  Some don't even take all your BAH.

Which base in San Diego?  There are several.  Expect to have a commute no matter where you live.  Rent in San Diego is very expensive, take your time and look at several places.

Right next to 32nd Street base is nasty and dangerous.  Avoid National City.

HI Niki I live in Oceanside 45 mins North of San Diego . My daughter and her husband was stationed in San Diego and she lived here all of her life . Are you guys not going into base housing ? They lived in base housing twice in San Diego. Our rent in San Diego is very high and there are areas to stay away from.

I am going to look into the privatized housing, thank you Anti M and no Cindy my husband's preference is to live off base if that is possible also he will be located at the 32nd street naval base which is Naval Base San Diego I do believe. Thank you ladies for all your help looks as if we have our work cut out for us finding housing.

My husband was on North Island (Coronado), and we lived in Birdland.  That is above Mission Valley, between Linda Vista and Sera Mesa. Those are all pretty okay areas.  Chula Vista is near 32nd St, and some people like it.  My friends rented an apartment all the way up in La Jolla because they liked being near the university.  There are nice little places downtown too, but it is downtown. We looked at places near Old Town, but the street scene felt iffy and that's right under the flight path to the airport.  We also looked near SDSU and did not care for that area (when you hear 10 different car alarms go off while waiting for the property manager... yikes).

Hubby had co-workers who had houses all the way out in El Cajon; I didn't like it out there, too damn hot and a very long freeway commute.  Poway and such are very nice, but the commute is a killer.

I've heard Imperial Beach recommended, but being a beach area, you'll get tourists and beach traffic.  Ocean Beach, same thing, with hippies.
