Welcome to DEPPER's...I hope that this group can offer support and a place
to vent, cry, laugh and brag.
Please feel free to reply to one of our discussions
or start one of your own.
Questions about DEP are most defiantly welcome.
A question that you have may be a question that someone else has
but just hasn’t ask yet.
What we don’t know we will find out!

Hello Jaye Lynn. What a beautiful name :) :) I'm sorry that I have not written to you sooner. My son left in September right after he graduated from high school. I understand how you feel. He graduated from boot camp in October and is now attending A school in Mississippi. I still miss him very much. He gets to come home for Christmas and we are very excited. Every day gets a little easier. Please feel free to contact me anytime. I find N4M's has been terrific in the support and just talking to other moms. Take care and God Bless.

That's a hard question to answer. I don't know if he would be eligible for enough leave to come home. If his school has a holiday break it is possible that he could come home. You may just have to ask some of the moms who have sons in "A" School now in Illinois. What is he studying?
Last year Dave had Christmas Day off (his first leave during bootcamp). Since his PIR was on Dec 28, I decided to fly back on Christmas Eve and be there to pick him up on Christmas Day----cook a full dinner (in the hotel) and then stay over for the the PIR 3 days later. THAT is a whole epic story in itself.....but I am so glad I did it. If it turns out that he cannot come home he might think about the "adopt a sailor" program where a local family would adopt him for the day and take him home for dinner. Lots of families do it in and around Great Lakes (and elsewhere). It's a thought. The holidays are hard when they can't be home. I suppose I will come completely unraveled when he goes to the fleet and is gone for the holidays. Do you know the song "Washington Square" by Chris Isaak? It should be the official holiday song for all Navy (and military) moms. He always dedicates it to military families when he sings it. It will pull at your heart strings.~~~~~~P

Hi Jaye Lynn, We have two sons. David is the younger one. He graduated from college in 2005 then decided he wanted more school - esp in the sciences. So he tested for the nuclear program and was accepted. He was a DEP for 8 months before going in. Those months were a gift for me so be glad you have them! He is signed up for six years -- the first two are school.
He's a alittle more than halfway through school now--- seems to be doing well, but it is hard work. I miss him alot. I am so happy he is coming home for the holidays. ~~~~Patricia

Hi Jaye Lynn --- Welcome to Navy for Moms! I saw your profile and see that you are from the bay area like me. How soon before your son leaves for Great Lakes? So glad you found this site because it will help you through all the coming emotional ride you are about to become part of-----but it's a great ride! If you haven't already--be sure to read "Honor, Courage, Commitment" by JF Leahy. It will take you (and your son) through what to expect of Basic Training. I wish you and your son all the best.
