How are you? Good to hear from you! Yes my son called me the day after the ship pulled into Yokusaka. It was sooooo good to hear from him! We talked for almost 30 mins. We also have been texting each other back and forth almost everyday. He gets my texts right away and we carry on conversations all the time.
Yes, I missed him and his big appetite on Thanksgiving. My other son is in Cleveland, TN in school, I missed him as well. I was worried about the both of them having a nice meal. Devon told me that he had a good day, but it was not like he's used to... I am a great cook on Thanksgiving, I must admit. I go a little crazy...(smile) with cooking so much food, pies, etc.
I am hoping that he just start exploring that country and go out and have a good time. On a side note...I wish he had of chosen stateside for his first permanent duty station - maybe just getting acclimated to the Navy first, so he will be used the life before going over to a foreign country.
I asked him was he still sleeping 0n the barge and I think he is, but I'm not sure. He has his blue card, and he is on some waiting list for a room in the barracks. I didn't realize that place used to house medical victims and it was previously a morgue...wow! My son and a couple of other made a video of the barge - where they are sleeping - and posted it on his FB page. It's pretty bad looking... I do know why they feel the way they do sometimes.
I wonder do our sons cross paths since they are both AOs.

He sounds down? This is exactly how my son sounds when he calls me all the time. You know what he told me when I went to see him in Pensacola while he was in Tech school? He said he wishes things were back like they were when we lived in the house that he grew up in Maryland as a teenager. My heart dropped... he didn't cry or anything like that, but I knew exactly what he meant. It seemed to me that he was regretting joining the military, but he was stuck and there was nothing that either one of us could do about it. I just told him to hang in there because things will get better and I really believe that he will begin to enjoy being in the Navy and seeing the world. Right now he is so new to military - the rules are so tight and he is the lowest on the "totem pole" - so sleeping in the barge, having to clean all the time, etc. may be depressing for them now and it's totally understandable... Things will get better for them as they began to grow up in the military - I really believe that! They have and will continue to make us proud!(smile)
My oldest son is 24 and is in his second semester at a Christian college in TN. Another late bloomer - "better late than never." (LOL) I have a 7, 8 and 9 year old still at home. I live in Hillsborough County in New Hampshire. Where is "Great Lakes" area here in New Hampshire? This state is bigger than I thought (LOL).
I am a Contract Specialist. I came here from Maryland for this job about 3 years ago. My husband loves the area and my children are doing great in the school here. But the winters are horrifying and the cost of living is pretty steep, although it is a tax-free state. However, the Summers and the Falls are gorgeous here.
Well, take care and try not to worry too much...(easier said than done ;-)) Our boys are growing up to be men and I have to tell myself that all the time because I am not in control of his life anymore and that is hard for me to deal with sometimes.

Hey Sue...remember me??? Long time no word...my sailor boy is currently on a training deployment on the USS John C. Stennis, really getting his hands dirty working with the jets on the flight deck. He is finally doing what the Navy has trained him to do. I have been thinking about Cody and wondering what he is up to now. Hope you and your family are doing well.
I love spending time on N4M - it's a comfort to me. Once my son arrived in Japan, his sponsor must have taken him to get a phone within a couple of days because I began to receive texts from him about 5 to 6 days after he arrived there. He has an I-Phone and that phone must be pretty popular in Japan, in his words"come a dime a dozen." I purchased a $2 phone card from 7-11 and tried calling him, but couldn't reach him at first because he had given me the wrong number. Finally, we figured out that I had the wrong number and I was able to get through to him. That $2 card gave me about 20 mins. to talk to him on his cell.
My son is an AO, but he claims that he's G4, so don't really know what he does all day or even if we are allowed to put it here on this website (for OPSEC reasons). I don't think he is doing anything as of yet to do with loading ordnance. If you want, you can email me @michellenwoha@yahoo.com. But my son is working pretty long hours from what I hear, but has just been changed to midnites which he says that he is now getting a good amount of sleep. I am glad to hear that.(smile)
My son does not have a computer, but he has an IPOD, PSP and he has his Iphone. He has access to the computers on the ship and he uses them to email me and his brother quite a bit. He even answered a few of my emails today. And yes! I was so happy to hear his voice after not speaking to him for a month - it was wonderful!(smile)
I also saw the close quarters where they sleep on the ship, it's like 3-bed bunk. I asked my son does he sleep on the top, middle or bottom and he told me that he use to sleep on the top, but it was a long way down when he would wake up, so he switched to the bottom. I would think he would be a little claustaphobic(sp?) sleeping in such a small area, but he says "it ok."
I live in New Hampshire (NJ is only a few hrs away) with my husband and 3 smaller children. My son that's in the Navy is 22 and I also have a son in college in TN. I work for the Air Force at Hanscom AFB in Mass.
You sound like you have a wonderful family and I am also so glad to be able to share my thoughts with you regarding my son.

G4, G1 - I thought was their division. My son says he's working the night shift now.
My son called me Tuesday and I was so excited to hear his voice - it had been a month since I had actually heard his voice. But he emails and texts me all the time now. We are able to communicate with each other quite well without speaking to each on the phone.
Glad your son got to spend this time with you... Yes it really hurts when they leave, but you will feel a little better in a few days. Also I would go to my son's room and stand there, picturing when he would be there sitting on the bed watching tv or just talking to him. My husband had to clean the room, I couldn't move his things around. Time has gone by, so I am used to it.
Only time I got to actually go to the airport with my son was after his BC graduation. He was a grad and go, so the airport gave us passes to the gate through security with him. We were able to spend 2 hours with him, so we sat and ate dinner and watched him walk through the door to the plane and watched his plane take off. I cried...everyone gave me a min. to compose (smile).
When he went to Japan, he left from his friend's place in GA, so I didn't get to see him off to Japan - but I was on the phone with him off and on until he was on his last leg to Japan.
Yes the ship is still out right now and my son is G4 - but I am sure they will see each other at some point.
Just hang in there - hopefully next year I would love to plan a trip to Japan to see him. My son also mentioned a program that allows them to pay a little money into an account each month that will allow them to be able to afford to purchase a ticket back to the states when they go on leave.
I am also glad to have found you all to help me throught this -- like Brandy-KJ's mom says "Keep Smiling!"

I just wanted to send you a special hug today, I saw that Cody is leaving on Saturday. I feel your tears...But oh, is he gonna love it there!! You will be so excited when he tells you all about it.
Today is KJ's 20th birthday! He called me from the ship and said he received TWO boxes just today that I had mailed out!! I couldn't have asked for more perfectly timed blessing!
