Hi Cyndie! Yes it is always nice to talk to a local Mom whenever I can, My youngest son Michael is leaving for boot camp tomorrow!!! UGH!!
My older son Tom has been in for almost a year now and is in Pensacola at the moment...
Thanks for your friendship, this web site has been a real blessing thats for sure for me!!!
I'm sorry it took me forever to resond to the comment you left! I just got back from my hubby's PIR! :) I found them in the Rod Powers section of about.com. :D
Hi Cyndie...AM are on hold a long time...it is a lot of cleaning and painting until they start school. My son was on hold for 3 month before he got started in A school down there/
I wanted to let you know that everbody is welcome to N4Ms and the NE group no matter how they conected to the sailor. We look foward to hearing more about you daughters BF/Sailor. Let us know if you or your daughter have any questions that we can help you out with.
We are so thrilled you have joined the Nebraska Group!!! We have families in all stages of Navy Life. Tell us a little about you and your sailor. I see that he just PIRd. I have a sailor that has been in year Feb 28 and one that is in the DEP program and will go to bootcamp in July. We are here for one another. Let us know if we can help or have any questions.
Cyndi, Just heard from Paul, his AT school starts on March 7th, so he doesn't have to wait around too very long. He said hes just glad to have warm weather again.
PS sorry you all didn't get to have good views of the PIR. You made me realize (because I didn't think about it until you said it as I was so caught up in the ceremony) just how lucky we were. We were seated at the same end they came in because that is where division 81 sat. I did realize that we were lucky to be sitting on the very bottom row and also lucky that Justin was on the outside row on the side that swung right around beside our seats as they walked by. He saw us immediately as we also saw him. Have a good night.
Sorry, I knew it was your daughters boyfriend (I just made a typo and didn't put boyfriend after the word daughters-typing too fast I guess). Well then you are the one up on me since your husband was retired airforce. We know 'nuttin'-haha. Meaning my husband and I nor any of our family members were military. His cousin is retired airforce (just in 2008-she was an ob nurse) but she's out in AZ with her hubby and kids (well now I take that back-her 1 daughter is in SanDiego with the Navy since December-she graduated Great Lakes in August). Funny her daughter has a friend in PNS with our son Justin and told him to watch out for Justin. Justin hasn't found him yet. Hope you don't get slammed too badly with whatever weather is coming at ya. Hate to say it-but our weather was picture perfect beautiful today. It was 77 and I was driving with the convertible top down. Ahhh the joys of living in FL (except for those dreadfully hot hot hot summers we endure-my poor husband hates that time of year because he owns a lawn care company and just stays miserable in the sun).
Yes, PIR was breathtaking. We laughed because we said our youngest daughter stomped on old ladies and dogs to get to her brother-haha. She was one of the 1st ones, if not the 1st one up there, when they called liberty. It is definately a memory that we'll reflect back on for years to come. Can't wait for the DVD to get here-they said that takes 6-8 weeks. I'm not sure what you mean by them being able to leave. They are in different phases as they go along. Justin just got his security clearance. He is in 'phase 2' as of tomorrow. That means that he can go off base just he has to be back by 9:45pm. Then in phase 3, it may be where they're allowed to fly home for the weekend-not real sure about that. Learning as we go along. He's been saying that his schooling was to start this week but, again, as he goes along he's finding out that isn't true. However, he doesn't think since he got his security clearance that he will be delayed like a lot of groups are. Seems like the IT (computer 'nerds'-haha) are delayed by much. Probably because they are responsible for the computers that run the ships and stuff. What caused me to shudder (hmm should I tell you this?) is that the reason why Justin was wanting his car is because his commander told them to be careful that there was a shooting right outside of the base last year. Now, I'm not sure which base because there are several there. I will tell you that the area outside of Corry Station (where Justin is) isn't nearly as nice as Great Lakes was. It's kinda not the best looking area. Not total dumps just not the best. We were there 2 weekends ago and are going again this weekend. Hopefully that doesn't put the worry into you to much but, at the same time, if your daughters commander hasn't told them to be careful then you must. Then again, big growing lessons for them all and I'm sure they will be in not the greatest areas in their travels and us moms can't be there to protect-eeek. Please keep in touch.
Hi Cyndie,
No, they don't have to be classed-up to earn their phases. They arrive in phase 1 and usually make phase 2 in a couple of weeks and phase 3 a couple of weeks after that. I know there's a huge back-log for some classes. I heard it was because of a shortage of instructors (so many of them are in the sand box), but I know that there are a lot of new sailors to deal with, so certain rates are very overcrowded. My son was fortunate and got classed-up very quickly, but he's spec ops so they must need them to qualify fast. Anyway, while they wait for classes to start they do a lot of cleaning. They can also find other jobs if they look hard. I heard of one guy who got a job at the air museum and my son got a job at the USO (baking cookies..how cool was that!). They can also take some online courses. He needs to ask his PO or chief if there's anything he can do besides cleaning to pass the time. Boredom is not a good thing.
Justin said all they have left to do is cleaning, nothing more, because Friday they were all done with everything. He also said they had to be moved because they can't be with the recruits anymore since they're now sailors. I guess since they were the senior team (arrived 1 week earlier) is the reason why they got to be finished a week early. We're hoping that he'll get Thursday liberty to be with us as my hubby's cousin's daughter did in August when she graduated. If you're sailor hasn't done battlestations yet, my prayers are still pumping for those to all graduate. 5 days!!! (I really call it 4 days since we'll be up there Thurs.).
Our son did his battlestations last night (was suppossed to have done it Tuesday). He's in Div. 81 ship 13. Justin told us tonight if he'd went in 1 day earlier he would've been PIR today. I'm bringing prayers over to all the rest of the recruits to do well and pass next week. Justin said there were about 15 guys from his division of 83 that didn't pass swimming and physical testing that couldn't do battlestations with them but those that did battlestations all passed. Those poor guys will be held back. That breaks my heart-for the guys and the families.
To reply to your last comment, you're probably right. Justin went in December 3rd-when did your sailor go in? Our son told us last Friday when he called us that he had battlestations sometime this week and we'd get a call from him sometime from the 20th-22nd (hasn't yet happened). He's graduating about 1 month before the recruiter told us he would and if your sailor went in a week later his training was really really short for them to be doing PIR together. We were pleasantly surprised though.
It is truly nice to hear from someone from the area. How long has it been since you have visited? I was born and raised in Nat. Hts. In fact, my husband and I bought the house I grew up in. I didn't go very far.
My son graduated from BC on Christmas Eve. The drive was kind of hairy, so if you are driving, be careful. They had 7 inches of snow overnight when we were there. Traffic around Chicago was horrendous (worse than the Parkway) But it was all worth it!!!! And to be watching the Superbowl with him.....wonderful! Good Luck and Take Care!
I have a cell, my GPS and good travel plans, I have roadside asstance with my Insurance and my husband and Brother know my route so Im set, I also have my cold weather servival kit.
Thank for the concerns, I have made this trip several times so I am prepaired.
How nice of you to think of me! I have arranged for a wheelchair at the airport and they told me if I get there early, they should be able to help me with the seating. I was hoping that they would just assign Alex a bulkhead seat, but they said they couldn't do that. I might just try again tomorrow and see if I get someone who will assign it!
I am so excited now - the worry of Alex not being able to come is over - it won't be easy, but it is doable! Now I just have to wait for time to pass and pray that nothing happens to delay PIR for Eric.
Battle Stations are going to be this week and part of next, They are trying to get them done so they have enough time to clean the Div. before they leave. Our sons and daughters are doing there PIR on the 30th so we should know no later than Tuesday or Wensday next week. Thata the best I can tell you at this point if I hear anything more I will let you know.
