Hi Mark,
I hope all is going well for you. I have a question for you that I would prefer to ask via PM. Would you mind if I add you as a friend? Debbie
Mark,
Thanks for this information. I try not to pry into Kelly's work, because I know some of it is restricted information. I didn't realize there were so many different MM's on a sub.
I plan on visiting Groton sometime while he is still in school. He is wanting his car brought up...is this something you would suggest for a 23 year old to have at Groton. He has a room mate that currently has one and he is purchasing rides from him.
Sorry for so many questions...you just seem to be the man with so many answers...:)
Mark,
I have been trying to find all your comments...all seem very informative. My son is a MM at Groton. What is the difference between a Nuke MM and a Sub MM? I can't seem to find the answer to this.
Thanks so much.
Nancy M
Yep that is the way math is being taught now. Scary isn't it. My son has never had to do long division without a calculator. Makes me feel old. I am currently in the nursing program and school is definetly different for the younger generation. The want power points(outlines from teachers) and are appauled when the teacher says you need to read the chapter. If you want to educate children nowadays you better teach them at home.
Hello I just wanted to give you the heads up about my son and his Math.My son said his greatest disadvantage in the math portion was that during school their test were multiple choice and he would just plug the answers into his calculator to determine the correct one.Our states disadvantage of school teaching to the test. But that is a whole different discussion. He has decided to set goals of passing the next test. and not worrying about all the test.He is in better spirirts and is veryproud of himself. Thanks again for all your help.
Thank you so much for all your info. Thank you for your service as well as your sons. Your words have helped me so much. I am leaving to pick up my sailor today. Can't wait to see him. Thanks again!!!
Hey Mark thanks for the info, My son averaged a C in Algebra 2 and took it as a Senior in 2007. He can be quite troubling with some of his comments, I know he is staying as many hours as possible to study. I know from all the post that A school is quite difficult, but sometimes it may be possible that he is looking for some sympathy. The mechanical part of A school he has found to be very easy. I think his biggest problem is the stress, I told him today to follow the advice someone else gave me for him to step back even if it is just 30 minutes or so and try to unwind. I am currently a senior in the nursing program and know that I have to study for about an hour and take a 15 minute relaxation break myself. Thanks for everything. P.S. My son also volunteered for sub duty. I cannot express how much I appreciate the Navy and all that they have done for my son to this point. The level of maturiy is incredible. I look at the friends he graduated with and realize that he has gained a sense of pride and determination. He has goals and the Navy is helping him realize those.
My poor son has to tolerate Hawaii. He goes from 4 years at UC SB (wearing only flip flops for footwear) into the Navy. He has been to Pensacola (OCS), SC (Nuke School), Balston Spa NY (Prototype) and finally Groton, CT (Sub School) before going to HI. We have received a number of emails from him. Besides the usual complaints, It appears that he is doing very well, with many added responsibilities.
I am serious about a special group just for your FAQs.
Regards, B.
P.S. Your wife can always ride shotgun on the cart while we play. Hey we get around in 3.5 hours. I am disappointed if we not having our first drink in 3.45 hours (I don't drink much but hubby has his two beers or glasses of wine per day rain or shine).
Forgot to mention - we are a family of golfers.
My husband (index 15) golfs every Sat & Sun. I (index 21) golf once or twice a month, sometimes at lot more. Our nuke officer (index probably around 8 now) shot a 69 last year at our club even though he had not played in 7-8 months. His playing partners were his recruiting officer and another senior officer. He invites them for golf and lunch whenever he is in town. We played a couple of rounds with him in Hawaii. The first day, he eagle a couple of times and birdie at least a handful but his putting was off. His captain does NOT know he golfs. He doesn't want him to know until he gets his dolphins. He said he'll try to take his EEs or is it EMs (?) out when they are back and give them some pointers. He'll be great teacher - he was terrific captain of his high school golf team. He is only the second best golfer in the family. The top spot goes to our younger son. He was suppose to play golf for West Point but made the Sandhurst team, so the golf coach let him off. He is no longer in the military. You look like you drive it at least 300. Did you played Torrey Pines in SD. There are a couple of tough courses up here too. Bring your clubs.
Dear Mark,
I think your voice of experience is an important factor here. As a mom (of a nuke officer on a sub), I can only relay second hand information. Your experience provides a realistic focus on the issues raised. Often the moms project their fears rather than useful insights. I am sorry I missed all the recent flak. I am guessing that your comments were probably too blunt and right on the button. You good advice is spread over many groups and discussion forums. I suggest you start a separate group titled "Sub and Nuke Questions and Answers by Mark" - no tears, no congrats and absolutely no b*t*hing - just hard core info - like a FAQ. You could probably go back and cut and paste some of your comments for starters.
If you are anywhere near San Francisco/San Jose, drinks are on us.

Hello Mark just wanted to let you know I found both books at Barnes & Noble. Can't wait to start reading them. I plan on passing them to my son to read.
Mark, just wanted to tell you that I loved your long response on the Nuke moms board. About the whiners, etc... What are those boys going to do when they are underway & only getting 2 hours of sleep at a time? And have to hot-rack? And their belt goes missing... Can't cry to mama then, can they? Anyway, my son had his boards yesterday (for his dolphins) He has 2 look-ups to do, but passed & will get his fish on Friday. He said the XO asked a lot of HARD questions-to where the other guys were looking at him funny... Plus Donovan made PO1 -found out a couple of weeks ago, on their last underway. They are really pushing him right now to drop another STA21 packet, etc. He'll already have 9 in when this tour is up & he loves the life so far. I think they just see his potential & are really trying to make sure he will stay.
Hey Mark just wanted you to know my boy received his orders. He will be on the USS CHEYENNE at Pearl Harbor,Hi. He sounded very excited and we are too.
Hey Mark I left you a message on Groton sub site. Thanks again for the info. I see you say that one of your boys is in Groton for STS. I have a group you may want to join its SECF- ET, FT, STS. Have a great day.
He actually did tell me he shoould get a c school after a school since hes going to be on a boomer he has to go to a special school i guess its a c school to learn all the special stuff on boomers. now were trying to find apartments and whatnot in the area for kbay. he is supposed to ge this orders in the next 2 weeks or so, so we're still just waiting haha
i wasnt dissing the schools, just saying that out of all the schools in the areas kings bay seemed best for us. (we like smaller school districts) the hole terrible thing that i said was because the site i was on said it wasnt that reat and some of the wives that live there that i talked to said not to go to certai schools bc they arent good around there unless u get out.. bangor and bermerton schools are different i thought, lol.. anyways yeah we are happy that we got the port we wanted hopefully it sticks, he hasnt gotten orders yet so were still crossing our fingers.
Hi Mark, I was at the Commisary yesterday like 5-630 ish.. but i havent been to the NEX in a while. so i dont think it was me, (plus my dad hasnt come up) lol. i'm trying to think if i was at the NEX lat friday tho bc i dont think i was.. hmm.. im not sure, lol..
Mark, Quincy Mass is just about as "fur" away from Bangor as one "kin git!" But, certainly worth the trip to see Son! How long do you get to spend together? Be sure to give him a big bear hug for all us ladies you patiently cyber-deal with! Hugs, k.
