I saw your post in 'Sasebo'...my daughter is on the USS Essex. Do you think you will be posting pics from your trip when you return of all the ships? Katie is a DC and has been there since April. I don't know that we will have such a wonderful opportunity as you to go over to visit. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful time with your daughter.
Hi Bethany; Hope all is well with you. Ashley sent me pics too but I don't know if the girls in the pics are Nina. I sent her an email to ask. I will share them with you if they are. I know that you are counting down the days until you get to see her in person. Take care and keep in touch.

Hi Bethany;
It so good to hear from you. I am getting excited for your trip too. Hopefully soon I will be doing the same thing. I am sorry to hear Nina has bad days and I hope she will be feeling better soon. I thought Ashley was the only one having these "bad days". She e-mails me one day just complaining about how much she dislikes things and of couse I get upset and feel helpless. and then she emails me the next day with positive stuff. It just keeps me on an emotional roller coaster. I know in all of it that I really am blessed to hear from her at all when I read about how some mothers don't hear from their sailors for weeks. Ashley has told me that their ship has been deployed for the last 10 months out of 12. I know I really don't have a say so in it but Do you really think it would be worth the money the girls would spend in rent to enjoy 2 months out of a year in an apartment? I know being on the ship has got to make them crazy but I don't know what the solution is. How long has Nina been with the ship? I have been looking for pics of the ship on the websites too. I told Ashley to tell her photographer that they need to get on the ball because all of the other ships have lots of pics on the sites and there are very few of them. We will see what happens. Keep in touch and I will do the same.
Take care-

Hey there!
I was just reading where you had posted that your daughter had gotten a japanese cell phone and it was so cheap. Can you tell me what type/company it is? My son is leaving on Saturday and I want him to get the best plan when he gets there.
Its so awesome that you get to talk to your daughter so much! I hope I am as lucky.
Hi Bethany; I know how your feel. I am just too excited about the things Ashley will get to experience and see. I check three sites frequently for pics. Can you share the site you found your pics on? You may e-mail me the site if it makes you unconfortable posting it. DHiett@balzer.cc Thanks a bunch!!
Take care. I will talk to you soon.

Hi Bethany;
Just checkin in on you to see if you have heard from Nina. Ashley says that she likes Nina. They seem to be getting along good and getting closer talking about girl stuff. Ashley seems to be adjusting well now. She says that they are busy but really doesn't mind because there is always something going on. She enjoyed her time in port and was looking forward to the olymics and steel beach party. She e-mails just about every day. There is a new member on USS Harper's ferry group. She wants to know what to expect regarding Japan, the ship and visiting. Im not much help maybe you can connect with her.
Take care and keep in touch.

Hi Bethany; Thank you so much for the kind words. How exciting for Nina to be getting married. Is he a member of the armed forces or a hometown sweetheart? Long distance relationships must take a lot of understanding and patience.
I bet you are just too excited to be going to Japan. I must get there too!!! I have three other children that will not let me go without them so I think it is gonna take a looong time to save up.
Ashley has spent the last 5 summers on mission trips. I hope she will continue to serve while in the military. From what I see, they have loads of opportunites to get involved from one end of the scectrum to the other.
I gotta go make some dinner. It was good to hear from you.
Keep in touch

Hi Bethany; Yay!! I got a call this morning too!! It was soo good to hear her voice. Her voice seemed a little more upbeat than her emails have led me to believe. She did say that they were busy, not gettin much sleep. She still feels like she has to learn everything all over and really hates not knowing exactly what she is doing but I tried to tell her to be patient it will come. She had just finished eating and was getting ready to play bingo. Which she loves to do but hates not winning (lol) She hasn't said a thing about any drama which is great! She hasn't told me where they are going but seems real excited about getting to go there. She said she could tell me when they get there in a few days. Thanks for filling me in. I will let you know if I hear more.
Dana
Hi Bethany; I got an email from Ashley this morning. She said she was getting ready to do watch and it was 10:30 pm she was tired already and hoped that it wouldn't take her too long to get used to things. Have you heard anything from Nina?
I am nervous. I hope Ashley finds a place to fit in.
Keep in touch.
Dana
Good morning Bethany; Just an update: Ashley left Japan yesterday to meet the ship. Hope all is well with the girls :) Let me know if you hear anything. I will keep in touch.
Dana
Hi there Bethany! My son just started in Sasebo and will be assigned to the USS Patriot.
Know of anyone else on the Patriot?
What is your daughter's name?
Gilda
Good morning Bethany; I talked to Ashley this morning on skype. She seems to be really adjusting well. She is not one to sit around and wait for things to happen. She has signed up for the hike this weekend to Mt. Aso (I think) and was waiting for a bowling tourney to begin this morning (night for her) . She told me that she was flying out on tuesday to meet the ship. She is very excited. Thank you soo much again for your kindness. I will keep in touch with you.
Dana
Oh my gosh Bethany....Thank you sooo much. You just don't know how much of a relief it is to hear that. I am so excited I can't wait to tell her. Ashley is finishing up INDOC today. Im not sure when she will get to fly out to meet them. When are your going to Japan? You will have to tell me all about it. Again, thank you sooo much!!

Dana!!! - I'm so excited to tell you this - I wish I could call you. My daughter called early this a.m. and I told her I knew of a mom who has a daughter reporting to her boat in Singapore - before I could finish my daughter asked if her name was "Ashley" and if she was Quartermaster - and I said yes - then my daughter went on to say, that they already knew about Ashley - they'd heard she was smart and had her act together and her bunk is already made up and waiting for her - her bunk is right below Nina's. Nina also said she is assigned to a great "cube" (bunch of people) and they share some of the same leaders and to NOT believe anything negative about the boat because its a great boat, and Nina said they are all looking forward to meeting her soon!!! Isn't that great! I hope you feel a bit better. Nina has said its been hard work though lots of long hours and she is exhausted. When they get to Singapore on Friday they will have overnight liberties. She is really looking forward to that.
Ashley is a quartermaster and is also living in temporary quarters until she is able to catch up with the ship. She was told that she would meet them in Singapore. She has heard a bit of negative stuff about the ship. I hope she will find a way to fit in nicely like your daughter has. How are you communicating with your daughter? Someone that was leaving gave Ashley her pre-paid phone but I believe that it is costing her a small fortune. She is still calling me every morning and evening. I love to hear from her but don't want her to go broke in the meantime. I am so looking forward to going to Japan. My other three daughters and I am shooting for 2011. You are right you only live once and that will be a trip of a lifetime. Enjoy and keep in touch.
Dana
Hi Mom of Navy Daughter, My daughter Ashley just got to Japan on Friday and will be joining the crew of the USS Harpers Ferry in Singapore. I would love to communicate with you regarding our girls.
Hi Mom of a Navy Daughter,
I read your message to Tina on the Japan Navy Moms Group site. and I am wondering - no just nosey - what you meant by our sailors being compared to Hispanic immigrants? My son is stationed at Sasebo Base. He so wanted to take the lanuage class offer by the base to learn the lanuage, but this did happen. He had two fellow shipmates almost get to finish this class, but at the last minute the ship changed their duty times and those sailors failed the class. There is more to this story, but I am curious about yours. If I am not being to forward to ask to know, please share. If I have bothered you or butted in - I am sorry. Terry
