If a sailor wants to cross rate they need to talk to their CCC. Before they will be allowed to cross rate, they need to be in there current rate for 2 years. As far as rates going away there is always talk of certain rates going away, it takes years before a rate is gone.
Hi there... sorry for my absence... been quite the busy bee lately -- who isn't, right??? Anyway, your son should at some point get some liberty -- age has nothing to do with it. Our Sailor's are treated as adults and are expected to represent themselves and our Navy in the highest standards. There are instances where one's liberty can be held -- i.e. academics, violations of other orders, etc...
Your son 'should' get leave after A school if he so chooses. He realistically will get a "report no later than" date on his orders. This can often times, be up to 30 days from when he graduates! ENCOURAGE him NOT to take all 30 days. That would be a years worth of leave already and he has only been in the Navy -- a few months!?!? Not a good thing. Basically, he will xfer from his school command and is on leave until he reports to his ultimate duty station. His recruiters can still act as liasons and aide him in the process if there is any confusion.
Hope this info helped. Once again, sorry about the delay.

Please read my bio on "my page" it will answer a few of your questions! In addition, I will tell you what I tell every young man and or woman that I sit down with before they ship out, in relation to "any" of their goals.
I simply state it for them and involve them........ I tell them the sky is the limit for them. The Navy is giving them a toolbox full of tools. Some which they are unaware of for the time being. However, that is "their" toolbox and those tools will ALWAYS be available for their use when THEY are ready! .... I go on to tell them that ALL of their goals are within reach and that there IS ONLY ONE PERSON STANDING IN THEIR WAY OF "NOT" ACCOMPLISHING THEM! And then I ask them if they know who that is! EVERY (I have been doing this for 14 years) person has responded with the following....... It is me Chief! I am the only one standing in my way!
I hope this helps. In addition, please read my quote at the top of my personal page! I also share those words with them as well! The Navy is an opportunity for every individual! I hope this has helped you. Please let me know if not!
Not a problem! PS is in fact an administrative type of job! Great working environment! Advancement is very good within the rating and as with any other rate ensure he studies, studies, studies, when it comes time for advancment to PS3 and above!
Cross rating is a possibility... however, I personally would caution him if he is already setting his sights on 2 years from now. Why? ......Well because by that time, he should at least be a PS3 if not even a PS2. That is a long way to come in a short amount of time. By that time, he may not want to step into a new rating which more junior people know more about than he would. Just a caution... not the end of the world by any means. It is possible, though to answer your question simply! Enjoy your weekend, I am certain you all have quality plans! ~Cheers!

The Initial Fitness Assessment (IFA) is a 1.5 mile run, as many push ups in 2min, and as many sit ups in 2min. The intention is for him to at least be able to do the minimum which in his case for 17yo is: 50 situps, 42 push ups, and a 12:30 run. If not, we can submit a waiver to ship him out. He should be good and his recruiters should get him to that point!
The PS rating is very important within ANY command in the Navy. The duties performed by PSs include: providing enlisted people with information and counseling related to Navy occupations, opportunities for general education and job training, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefits; assisting enlisted people and their families with special problems or personal hardships; interviewing personnel; administering tests; making recommendations for assignments; operating computers and copying machines; writing official letters and reports; performing enlisted and officer personnel administration; maintaining enlisted and officer service records, Navy directives and Navy filing.
Hope that helps! Keep us informed! :-)
Good Morning Beath!
Thanks for the kind words on my page! :)
Yes, 19.5 years for me! Joined when I was 17 (actually turned 18 in BC). So I have come a long way in a short amount of time! I just transferred from St. Louis to Tucson. So I have to obligate a minimum of 3 years. So I will probably be able to retire with about 22-22.5 years.
For your son...his physical condition--has he passed his Initial Fitness Assessment (IFA)? If so, no need to worry. Which he should have passed already! Anyway, don't fret... the Navy obviously has physical fitness requirements and they will embed this culture into the recruits at BC. They don't expect them to be able to do the graduation requirements once they get there. They gradually build them up! And although we have physical fitness requirements, keep in mind we like our sharp-minded Sailor's as well. We are not as stringent as the AF or MC. He will be fine. Positive attitude on both your parts and everything will go smoothly!
If he hasn't learned too much while in DEP, I would HIGHLY ENCOURAGE (I tell this to all my recruits) him to learn his 11 general orders (by heart with no stuttering), his Sailor's Creed by heart, the Navy's Core Values, and some of the rank recoginition would serve him well! Let me know how things progress!!!
Hi Beath and Thank You for the warm welcome. My son will be leaving for BC 2 days before Thanksgiving And although my heart aches, I know this is what he wants and he will be just fine and in the Lord's hands. He will be then going to A school for Master at Arms. My son and I have a Wonderful relationship. He is my baby and my only son. I have 2 daughters in addition and they are both older than he. Not by much though. I am thankful for our relationship. I have always strived at a close relationship with all 3 of my children and am blessed to have that. My husband and I are very grateful to the Lord for that. AJ is the last one to leave the nest and within the span of 1.5 yrs, my nest has gone from full to empty. Hard...yes, Happy for my children...yes. Happy for me...No... Anyway, Thank You again and I look forward to the support I will gain from this site.
Beath,
Catherine just finished A school and reported to Kitsap, Washington just yesterday. She won't be eligable for the E4 advancement test until March 09. The reason we felt PS would be a good rate to be in while trying to take college courses is because PS would basically be an office job. My son was a AO for a fighter squadron and he worked 12 hour shifts and was dead tired after. He couldn't take extra courses while on deployment because of his long hours also - so that factored into Catherine's decision.
Beath,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. My daughter also went in as an E3. The problem with the PS rating being overmanned is that there will be a long wait from the time they pass the test until the time they actually get the advancement. I forget the terminology for that, but her recruiter was talking to us the other day when she was home and he told her that she had to get a really good score on the E4 test and then would have to wait for awhile until she would get the advancement - and might not get advanced if there isn't a "spot" for a PS3. She might have to wait until the next rotation and take the test again.
I don't remember her ASVAB score - it was pretty good tho'. The reason she wanted PS is because she wants to take college courses and wanted a job that was going to give her the opportunity to do college/homework, etc while on active duty. She hopes to get her degree and then become an officer.
PS is an admin job, dealing with peoples service records and such. He always can cross rate after 2 years in the job he has, he can apply to get another job. Tell him that is a option, go to bootcamp, get stationed where ever he will be and then take a look at all the jobs around him. He may see one that he would have never considered before. Do his time as a PS and then crossrate.
My son is a Yeoman (admin assistant sort of) on the USS Nimitz in San Diego. I miss Hawaii and want to visit again. You know the Hale Koa will be an option for your son to get into when on vacation. He can book it anytime as he will be active duty and eligible. I love that hotel. Was stationed on Guam and stopped over many times for 4 to 5 days to enjoy Hawaii and the food. Man, just thinkin about it makes me want to go back..
It is almost 8 am here in Maine..Rainy and cold,....must be nice there...
PS do admin work. They update Sailors Service records, assist with pay issues.
Advancement for PS has been down for some time, there is talk of that rate going away. There are too many people in the PS rate and most of the billets for PS is going to civilians. So there is no idea in 5 years what will be going on with that rate.
Your son needs to decide what he wants to do in the Navy. If he wants to switch rates he HAS to do it prior to BC. As once he leaves for BC he will NOT be allowed to cross rate in BC or “A” school.
Hi, Beath- Thank you so much. Craig called yesterday and gave me his address at YN "A" school in Meridian MS. It's great he can call now whenever he wants to. He starting to sound more and more like his old self instead of that Boot Camp stuff. He's glad to be out of Great Lakes though. He's looking forward to getting out in the fleet to do the job he's suppose to do. How's M doing?
The only advice i can give is...Be Proud of him and believe in him.I can say my son when in as a boy and now he his a man.Don't get worried if he don't call he will.Navy moms are here to talk There are alot of us felt the same way.Your Son will do fine and he will make it through BootCamp!

Hello,
Oh okay thanks for the info.
Well, it's hard to get anything out of my son and he is not one to ask alot of questions.
My son is doing fine but there was a stretch of time where he would go into a depression mode and we do our best as parents to help encourage him along.
KC is an Engineman/Fireman on board the USS Rodney M. Davis out of Everett, WA.
He was recently home on leave and I was able to fly back with him and spend a few more days up north with him before reporting back to duty. Washington is such a beautiful area to visit. Hope to be back there sometime next year.
Hi Beath!
I've never been to Hawaii, but don't you all have a lot of swimming pools??
Matt is the youngest of three kids and the only boy. So when he left for boot camp last February, we had the empty nest syndrome. I wish you could drop your son off here for a week. I have been giving swim lessons for the last 25 years! I'd love to help your son learn to swim....
Anyway I hope you connect with someone that can start teaching him before he leaves.
Matt is a Sonar Technician. He will be on a destroyer when he leaves Norfolk. Which might be next month. His ship is in the Gulf right now and we're waiting for him to get his orders from the CO of the ship as to when and where he flys to catch up with his ship.
Let me know what you figure out with your son's swimming.....
Hi Beath,
Things are great with Kori he called last night and will be home now on Thursday as far as he knows. Then he goes to SD after 15 days of leave. I can hardly wait to see him. I'm so proud of him. I talked to the recruiter last week to find out why he gets to get out of A school so early and he told me that my son has most likely completed all the classes early. I'm so proud of him.
Well Kyle called tonight which was GREAT!!!! He said that he is not PS anymore. He is now StoreKeeper. He will still go to MS. I don't know why they changed it. Any way I just wanted to let you know. How are you doing?
Hey beath,
You might want to check out this site. It actually tells you exactly what they do each week in boot camp. So now I can keep up even I don't hear from Kyle.
