My daughter is in Hawaii, she works for National Security. My Son just Graduated from the Nuclear Engineering Program in SC. He has signed up for the Naval Officers Academy, so he has a ton of paperwork and interview to do to see if he is accepted. Otherwise he will head to NY for the next phase of his Nuclear Training.
Regina, I dont know if I put you on my friends or not if I did not we will try again. My son is in Charleston SC Goose Creek. I am going to see tomorrow Flying out at 5:30 AM
Regina, I'm sorry it took so long to respond. I've been working a ton since we are very short handed at work. My son's squadron is going to be on the USS DeWert when he is deployed next month. My son was told so far that there will be limited space to bring stuff and to bring a sleeping bag as the blanket is thin and it is cold where they sleep. Also, he has to use their internet when out at sea.
How are you?
Regina. good to have you. we have a NFM Chattanooga. We meet and have dinner and talk about our childter. We would love to have you join us. We have 2 other people in Ceveland that are talking about join us next time maybe Aug. 29.
Regina...I just read your blog above...you son is an officer???...forget everything I just said below...it will probably be different for him!!! The ship stuff will probably be the same! hahahaha...ship is a ship but I bet there is a big difference in enlisted and officer quarters!! Wonder if they have officer quarters??? Robin
Regina...both in the barracks and on the ship...it will be a twin size...They ARE issued sheets and a blanket on the ship...it is just a wool like (nobody likes them) blanket...they are allowed to have their own bedding...any color...they are NOT issued pillows. On the ship he will not need anything more than that bedding and there is no room for anything other than his seabag!! But the barracks is a different story...There they are issued sheets and a flowered bedspread...and that is it...there are different styles and there is not guarantee which he will get...but my daughters quarters has 2 bedrooms with 2 twin beds with 4 drawers I think underneath eaach bed in each room with 2 lockable closests, and armoire (TV cabinet) with 2 drawers and one desk and two end tables with table table lamps and a ceiling fan (carpeted). The main space when you open the front door is a small kitchen area with small sink, cabinets, microwave, smaller frig and a stackable washer and dryer. Then in the hall area is two sinks outside of the bathroom door. In the bathroom is a shower and toilet. The the two bedroom doors are side by side across from the sink area...So 4 girls share this space. The other style is similar but doesnot have washer and dryer in room but are available in the building but you have to pay to use them.
Just make sure he can store what ever you send with him at first until he gets permission to live off the ship. My daughter has 2 sets of bedding...one on ship and one in barracks...2 grooming kits- one in barracks and one on ship...so for those you need 2 of everything...2 toothbrushes, paste, combs, brush...etc...most leave their uniforms on the ship and roll out of bed in the morning...throw on their personal civilian clothes and jump in the car to go to the ship...They get dressed on the ship...They also eat on the ship in the ships galley...so Ali has to be onboard no later than 7:00 am and in uniform for muster at 7:15...so she gets up at 5:00 and walks to the ship (no car yet) and eats and then gets dressed...the BEQ's (bachelor enlisted quarters) aka Barracks are about 3 to 4 blocks from the ships...easily walkable. They have vacum sweepers that they can sign for at the front desk to use and return. The rooms are inspected about once a week...3 fails in 3 months time and you go back to the ship!! So he will need cleaning supplies too!!! hahahaha...I am glad that we went back the next weekend to help her get everything she needed...and to help her organize and take advantage of every little piece of space she had in the closet, cabinets and under the sinks. We also bought her a shower caddy...imagine 4 girls with 4 different shampoos and conditioners and soaps and loofahs...right now the girls are all sick of cleaning after each other and are swearing to paper plates and forks and refusing to buy food!!hahaha wonder how long that will last!...OH and they have to take the garbage out everyday...so lotttttsss of garbage bags medium size. hope this helps!! Robin
Hi Regina...my daughter is in Mayport on USS The Sullivans...every ship is different but in her case...she was assigned berthing on the ship and had to stay there until she ran a chit up the chain of command for permission to live off of the ship and to be assigned a room in a barracks/Residence Hall. While on the ship she immediately wanted bedding...sheets, comforter and a pillow...and towels for shower!!! Then when she got her chit approved ( I think that was about 3 weeks later) to move off the ship...she still kept her berthing there on the ship for when she has the duty watch or while they are underway...so she needed another set of bedding for the barracks...they did issue her a set of sheets and a blue floral bedspread...but she chose no to use it. So they need like two sets of every thing (pillows, bedding, towels and shower grooming kits)...so they dont have to keep moving it back and forth from the barracks to the ship when they have the duty or the watch or get underway for a week or so...They tend to keep their uniforms on the ship except to take home for laundry. So we went to Walmart and bought...another set of bedding, pillow, more towels, bath/shower rug, kitchen rug, iron and ironing board, dust mop for floor, swifter mop, cleaning supplies for kitchen and bath (they inspect the quarters about once a week.) We bought an over the top of the door bar of hooks for her closet to hang things on, about 3 dozen hangers, a laundry basket, a thing to go over the closet rod that hangs down making a sorter for shoes and sweaters and stuff...a basket to put under the bathroom sink to put shower stuff, makeup, shampoo, etc...a small coffee pot, plate, bowl, glass and coffee cup and silverware, some tupperware bowls, can opener, couple of knives...then the staples...toliet paper, paper towels, laundry soap and dryer sheets, salt & pepper, condiments, dish soap and a ton of Clorox wipes for cleaning. She does not have a car and would not have had a place to store all that stuff in the beginning...so we drove back over (we live in Pensacola) once she got her room assignment and took her shopping. We brought her some things from home but it was a great leaning /life experience watching her spend all that money to live off the ship!!! We go back to visit her about once a month to take her shopping to restock on the big stuff. the stuff that iis too big or heavy to carry for 4 or 5 blocks walking...she can get the rest at the local NEX Minimart on a daily basis. Hope this helps you decide what to buy now and what should probably wait until he knows where he will be living. Boys are sooo much easier than girls anyway...he might choose to buy paper plates and plastic forks so not to have to do the dishes!!! hahahaha But he will definately want a pillow and some towels right away and will probably want a comforter and sheets too. Robin
Good to hear from you and GREAT your son got stationed in the place that he reqeusted. Our son (I'm just a step) has been in Mayport since January. We went to see him a couple weeks ago, and had a really nice time. It is a 10hr drive for us. We live in the western part of KY, so we can be neighbors also! Hope his move goes well. Andrew is on the John L Hall.
Hi Regina, I just saw your post in the Mayport group. I live in Orange Park, Fl and my son will also be Stationed in Mayport on the Phillipine Sea. What rate is your son?? Andrew is an ET and is scheduled to report in Dec. He is currently in San Diego attending the first of his 5 C schools.. I look forward to getting to know you. Susan
Hey Regina, how are you? I haven't been on line for almost a month, have been having problems with the computer and unable to go on internet. How is Jeremy? My son is still in GL. Let me know how everything is going and I will check from time to time.
Drew graduated on May 15. He was one of the flag leaders. It was fund to watch him perform. We enjoyed our time with him. He went to CT to sub school. He is loving it!
Howdy Neighbor! That is so funny that we live that close together and never knew each other. My son is in San Antonio Texas and loving every minute of it. He gets to come home on May 30th. I am so excited.
Yes, I can't wait for him to get to Pensacola, we are about a nine hour drive but its better then Chicago. He is on hold now waiting to start ATT, so right now I have idea when he will be coming to Florida. Has Jeremy started his schooling yet?
I don't know anyone yet from our group that is there at GL. My son tells me that there is a small group from bootcamp but I don't know their names. I will ask him for names next time I speak to him.
Yes, I'm sorry we didn't get the chance to meet, maybe we will have another opportunity in the future. I looked at the people in the bleachers but didn't know who was who.
