Hi, Maureen - Welcome to the Moms of IS Sailors group. We are having lots of fun getting to know eachother. We have sailors at all different stages of their Navy careers - from just finishing boot camp to several years in the fleet, so we try to help eachother figure out what's going on! My son, Jim, is 19, an E-2, stationed outside of London, England at a NATO Intelligence Fusion Center, working in OPINTEL as a Maritime Intelligence Analyst....I hope I'm saying that correctly! He's been there since mid-November and is having the adventure of his life. Loves his job and England. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and hearing about your sailor. Welcome to our group -- Ellen

Hi Maureen. I hope you all enjoyed your New Years. We watched 'Water Horse' and then the arrival of 2009 in CHICAGO on tv. Pretty quiet here with no kids. Rob is really getting to know and enjoy Pensacola. He called this morning. How's Joshua? A happy & healthy New Year to you all!

Hi lady! I like your new pic. I did not want to call & bother you, so thought I'd just touch base this way. I am sure after that trip and the holidays - you are exhausted!
Heard from our Josh lately? What is going on in his world?
We went to Great Lakes yesterday and spent the day with Rob at Gurnee Mills Mall. He and I saw Four Christmases - very funny! Ended up eating at an Irish restaurant not too far from the Metra station just behind their base, where we picked him up. He got a phone the day after graduation and got in trouble for carrying it around. When he called to tell me about it - I got really worried that he may have really 'blown it'. I was so scared I called his recruiter, who assured me that alone would not jeopardize his standing in the Navy. He was put on hold because he needed one more signature (total of 3) to proceed with his orders to Pensacola but, that person had left for vacation and Rob had to wait until they retuned. He now leaves on Tuesday. He called this morning to tell me he was going with another Sailor - girl - to the Mall again - just to get off base while he had liberty. It was nice when I came home last Wednesday and he had sent flowers to me for Christmas - very pretty. He did play his guitar for us in the car yesterday. He couldn't keep it, so I just brought it with us and back home again. Today I am staying in and just going to work on setting up the printer to my new laptop. I am so not good with such things! Ha!
Have a great New Year dear. We have made no plans yet, so not sure what we'll do. Usually stay at home & ring it in with Dick Clark.
Call me when you feel up to it and we'll chat.
Hugs to you all!

We are hoping to go to Gurnee Mills too on Thursday, after we arrive. We are leaving here around 9:00 am and that IS early for Harry -NOT a morning person! Harry's not too big a shopping fan but, he'll sit around & wait. Plus you KNOW we bring him to carry the packages -ha! Plus help pay!
It is snowing here right now. Good thing -my Christmas cards are supposed to be a picture in a card except I got sick and didn't take any pics -DUH! I will try to capture a few & if they turn out - will get them started. I am so late on doing everything holiday related this year. I swear every year it is going to be different -yeah right! NOT!
I wish Rob would call - just want to touch base. Sent off my last letter yesterday and he may not even get that - depends on the postal service. I told him several times to save all letters for his scrapbook - hope he did! I even sent several manilla envelopes in a letter for him to mail them back but, I never got any. Not yet anyway.
Well dear - enjoy the city. It certainly can be beautiful. I'll touch base with you soon.

Awww congratulations, it finally arrived! I was just thinking about you this weekend and wanted to pop a note to you before you left, but I'm probably too late. I have been so swamped - my tree is still not up and we leave wednesday at 2pm. LOL. I have gifts to buy, gifts to wrap, bills to pay, ughhhhh. Please do keep an eye out for Kelly. I am writing her today and sending it express mail of her hair dryer and flattening iron for her hair for her PIR [she called and asked me if I could send it - I just LOVE going to stand in line at the post office right now], so I will tell her to keep an eye out for you. Please give her a hug from her mama if you do see her. She is so excited about air crew - I guess all she has left for that is to pass her flight physical.

I know you must be so excited and happy to be seeing Josh. Big hugs to you. I want to hear all about it and see your pictures when you get back!

Guess what? We are staying at the Ramnada Inn too!
Our 19 year old daughter Ashley will be with us. Arriving sometime the 18th leaving again the 19th.
Now Rob says he gets to come home from A school the 21st and has to be back the 4th. ??????? Rob wanted us to check flights.
Sure it sounds great - home for Christmas and all - I'm just afraid it will change again too. We had heard this before he told us he was G&G.
I just wish they could call us.
I have been off work 2 days - intestinal flu -ugh! About ready to retire for the night- very weak now . So much to do - no strength to do it.
I'll get back to you later this weekend OK. Have a good one.

Hey Maureen. I am finally trying to catch up here - been busy. Yes, that's my Rob - so much for keeping a low profile. They know who he is NOW! But, he is thrilled with being the cadence singer -loves it. He is very annimated, so this is perfect for him plus all the energy he has!
I too hope the talk did some good. Either way, our own lads seem to take it all to heart -that is encouraging I agree.
Yes, Harry & I will be at the Meet & Greet at Flannagans. Before that happens I'll get you my cell number -that way we can make sure we connect. There may be a lot of people and i would hate to miss the opportunity to meet & talk to you. Where are you staying?

Hi Maureen!
I still haven't gotten the grad packet yet but, Lori another Mom told me about the M&G. I told himself that I do want to go, so I may have to take that day off work too. Still not sure where we are staying - have you decided?
Rob told me about that pep talk too. He LOVES being Cadence Singer and said he tried to get it from the start, so I am happy and proud for him. He can be a clown and that may be aggrivating, so just warn your son ha ha!
I g0t a letter last night - loved it! Did he tell you about the deer incident? If not - as him about that. Rob said it would have been great for You Tube!
I can't believe how the time is flying and soon we'll see our kids grad -whooooo who! Have you gone in to You Tube to listen to some iof the Cadence songs - some are real funny! I told Rob he should try to make one up - that would be cool. He's pretty good at ad libbing. He did tell me that his RDC said by the end of their march he was tired of Rob's Oprah singing-ha! Not exactly sure what that meant but, it sounded funny!
Well dear, have a great weekend. Keep me posted!

Oh man...I'll bet he IS lucky there were people around when you found out he got the call. I'm so glad your family got one any way! And 3 letters wooo hooo. I don't know if your son is anything like my son James, but getting a paragraph out of him would be amazing. LOL. I'm glad he sounded good, and I am really looking forward to next week too. We have such much to be thankful for! Hugs to you. Connie

Hi Maureen. I'm relieved everything is okay and I'm glad you at least got to talk to the Chaplin's assistant about Josh. News is news in any form. Kelly goes to chapel too, and I am happy that she is doing that. I'm sorry you've been sick. Kelly has a horrid cold too [I could hear it in her voice when she called me]. I'm glad you husband is up to coming over and the dinner invite is definitely on for as many as you want to bring with you, we're a "more the merrier" family. Even if you decide not to come to our place for dinner, you could always come for desserts. I forgot to tell you that my boss's son, Ryan, also is in the University of Alaska Fire Dept. Program. I saw him last night and asked him if he knew your son and he sure does...he said he has had several classes with him. Then to find out your son knows Hunter! What a small world indeed. I'm glad you love the pictures of Kelly. I just had to share them. I know she'll be beautiful, even with (as she calls it) her "jacked up Navy haircut." LOL. I told her hair grows back! Looking forward to talking to you soon! Connie

Maureen - it was wonderful talking to you Thursday night. I hope that your husband won't be too shy and will come have thanksgiving with us. We're a fun group and we always say the more the merrier and there will be plenty of guys there [my husband, brothers in laws, friends]. There will be lots of food and fun. If he won't budge on coming for dinner, please do think about coming for desserts, and no matter what you and I will meet and greet for coffee and a long chat about our wonderful kids. :-) P.S. I wrote kelly and asked her to keep an eye out for your son. I told her his nickname and a brief description of what he looked like and asked her to tell him that his momma and I have become friends through N4M. I also was going to tell you that my boss's son is in the same program as your son at the university and probably knows him :-) What a small world! I'm hoping to get a call from Kelly tomorrow, no call so far today :-( I'm keeping my cell phone handy and will be staying home tomorrow waiting for my call. Hugs to you.

Maureen - I'm glad you enjoyed my blog about Kelly's letter. And yes, I'm very proud of her. She's amazing, but then I think all of these young men and women are amazing for volunteering to leave their friends, family, all they know, with nothing but the clothes on their back. I am in awe. I know you'll be hearing from Josh soon, it took from Monday to Friday for the mail to arrive here in Fairbanks. I'm hoping to get another letter today or tomorrow. That's funny Josh loves the Office too, as that is a show Kelly and I always enjoyed watching together and laughing over. And aren't you a good momma for writing him even though you're not crazy about writing letters. From what I have heard, I know he will really appreciate it.

When you come to Fairbanks for Thanksgiving, I would love to meet with you for coffee. I'm going to send you an email with my telephone number so that we can talk about where and when to meet! This is definitely probably the closes thing we will get to a Meet and Greet . I figured it would be the closest thing to a Meet and Greet since we are all so spread out here in Alaska, and it will be nice to know by sight at least one of the mom's from our little group.

I have not made my flight arrangements yet, though I am scoping out reservations. I just talked to her recruiter today. He told me that she is scheduled to go to A-school in Pensacola, but that they should have a break after the 12/24 PIR due to the A-school in Pensacola being closed down for the holiday until after the 1st, and that he believes she could come home with us after the graduation, though it would count against her 30 days of yearly vacation time in the Navy and she would also have to pay the airfare difference of flying to Pensacola from Florida versus flying to Pensacola from Chicago. I am hoping like mad to get a phone call from her so that I can talk to her about what SHE wants to do. I know what I want her to do...lol...but I guess she DOES get a vote in this too ;-) Take care Maureen. ----Connie

hi- bc is tougher on us then them! i learned that after many nights on here having the other moms hold my hand - at PIR he tells me he actually enjoyed it, especially Battlestations! N4Ms sent a bunch of moms to NYC on the TODAY show in July and gave us the N4Ms shirts and hats. I did order a sweatshirt online thos thru printfection on this website. take care - the letters will come soon but don't be surprised if they are not too full of info..our letters only spoke of food (which he enjoyed there too!) and sports scores..Oh but do write to him alot - they do enjoy their letters from home !

Hi Maureen - Just checking in to say hi and see how Josh is doing. Kelly is scheduled to graduate 12/24 which is not a lot of fun trying to find a reasonable reservation to fly to Chicago from Alaska. I was told it is cheaper to go through Wisconsin and then drive, so that is what I think I may do. I also don't know if Kelly gets to come back with us after graduation before attending her A school. I think if her A school is in Pensacola [where I think it is going to be], then she will get to come home. It makes it hard knowing whether I can make a reservation for her to return with us on 12/26 or not [I don't want to fly on Christmas Day if I can help it, but who knows. Anyway, I hope things are going well for you son. Hurrah for the Alaska kids.

Your Josh sounds like an exemplary kid. You are most fortunate.
Rob is the youngest for us. My husband Harry and I were married 8 1/2 years ago. He has twins from his first marriage - boy & girlk -now both 31 years old. I have a 29 year old son from a realtionship where his Dad and I never married. Rob (18) and his sister (19) were from my previous marriage. Shortly after Harry & I were married, he adopted Rob and his sister, so we are a blended family. Rob is a very kind hearted kid - makes friends with the kids in school in wheelchairs and no one else pays attention to. He has a wonderful heart - much more sensitive than he reveals to others. Of course, I see it. I will however say, he has been a challange. Impulsive and spontaneous - sometimes to a fault. He desperatly needed the structure the Navy had to offer. He has a wee bit of a gypsy soul - like his Mum. He can be a very good worker But, hopoefully he's well learning to pay more attention to detail. He has played football since he was 6 (with the exception of 1 year), so really enjoys the game. He is not a big kid, so not the most gifted athlete but, a lot of heart. He is a goof ball - loves to be the 'class clown'. I hope hoping he learns more of when it is/is not appropriate. He loves attention and praise. He taught himself to play the guitar but, really doesn't like an audience - more just hanging around friends and jamming sort of thing. He is a grand 'shower singer' - we can hear him in the livingroom! He's big on family and interested in family history, as long as he doesn't have to delve too deeply. He loves to take pictures. His favorite movie is Dances With Wolves. and loves The Sound of Music. His musical taste is very ecclectic. Dean Martin to Marty Robbins to The Temptations to The Bewatles to The Graetful Dead to Alana Jackson, etc etc etc. Weird for such a young kid but, rather cool too. He's like me in the respect -depends on what mood he's in.
He is wanting to go in to aviation. He wants to be one of the guys doing what is described as the 'chaotic ballet' - flagging in planes on a carrier. So, we'll see. Being so impulsive, I know him well enough to know possibly that is subject to change. His A school is supposedly in Pensacola and he THINKS that means tons of girls on the beach. Little he knows yet poor lad-ha!
I would just love to hear his voice and I'm hopoing I will within another week or so. I just sent him a Veteran's Day card from Hallmark. Pretty cool. A local paper gave everyone the opportunity to put a picture and even story about their Military personnel in a special section for Veteran's Day, so I did just that. That picture of him with his Navy guitar cake and a portion of the note he wrote to us on his way to Bootr Camp on the bus. I sent him a copy and reminded him of how proud we were of this choice.
Well dear, seems the old hips are giving me fits tonight, so I will say goodnight. Happy Sunday tomorrow. Thanks for letting me into Josh's world - I wish him and you the very best.
Hugs!
