Hi
I saw where you are near Farmington. I am in Sikeston. How long has your daughter been in? My son is in Oceana VA. He has been there since Nov. Great to see another Navy Mom so close!
Patty,
Glad to know a friend is close by. I know where DeSoto is, I actually lived in Pevely for 10 years. Encouraging that Danielle likes the Navy. I believe Brittany will also, it's all just soooo new for all of us. Thanks for the words of uplift and hope. Stay in touch,
Karen / "Ducky"
Well, Patty it is a small world. That's our Sara. I asked if she knew you & she knew who i was talking about. She came home sick today, but is felling better.
I have had mixed feelings about Japan also, although I haven't mentioned that to her. One of the reasons for joining the navy was to travel & that would be traveling. But, if she were to go to Japan, I would try to get my sister-in-law, Naomi, to go with me. Her mother is from Japan & Naomi has been there to visit relatives. Jenny's dad does not like to fly. He says when they finish the bridge he'll go.lol We'll cross that bridge (no pun intended) if she goes.
So, did Danielle go to school in San Deigo? Jenny said if she goes to C school, she might go to either San Deigo or Norfolk. We have been as far as Duck, NC & when Jenny was a baby we visited relatives in Long Beach, Ca. Never been to San Deigo. I just hope where ever she goes she likes it there.
When Danielle ships out, do you get to communicate much & by email or phone or both? What is the longest she has been out at one time? Have a good week end & keep in touch. Tammy
HI Patty,
I actually had to pour salt on the drive way so I could get my Durango up the drive way and in the garage on Tuesday when I got home. I bought it while we lived in TX so I didn't need a 4 wheel drive then.
I stayed in for the last two days but had to go out today and show houses. Someone called me yesterday to show one but I said "no I was staying in".
I haven't gotten an email from Sam lately, the last one she said she was going to request to be moved. We will see how that works out. She is going to be put on a different ship when this one comes in so she just has to hang in there a little while longer.
Patty----This weather has kept me in, so I'm into painting (rooms) & cleaning closets. Get to watch the grandkids tomorrow. Jenny is going to AT school (aviation electronics tech). She loves the math, but the rest is challenging her. She should finish her classes in April. How long will Danielle be gone? Does she get to tell where she is going? Jenny has mentioned putting in to go to Japan. We will just have to wait & see.....they don't always get what they want.....Jenny calls it 'voluntold'....your're told what to volunteer for. lol We're going to try to go see her in April....told her to let us know when spring break is over.......Tammy
Patty-----Talked to Annie, she remembered Danielle. Had some classes with her. Thought she was really nice and always helpful with other students. Yes, Jenny was a life guard at Park Hills pool. The recruiter often worked out with Jenny. Danielle's job sounds interesting. Jenny would like to serve on a carrier, but what ever she does I know it will be exciting for her. Talk to her just about every day. She and her dad have good conversations (he served in the army). It's fun to listen to their boot camp experiences. Tammy
Hi Patty,
I am sitting here with the fire going. Man is it cold outside. I guess now we just see how much ice this front brings. We were out of our home for a week a couple of years ago.
Hopefully Sam will be back sometime this Spring. Of course we don't have exact dates to be able to plan anything just somewhere around. We have heard rumers that they may be extended in the area for two months longer so not sure when they will be in.
I am hoping to attend the homecoming. My son will be going on the Tiger Cruise as well. Very exciting time.
Hi Patty----Sounds like we're from the same area. Yes, Jenny did go to NC. She graduated in 04, her sister, Annie, graduated in 06. They both played softball for NC & Jenny played basketball. Jenny joined the navy in July, 08 & is going to A school in Pensacola. If she goes on to C school, she may end up in Norfolk. Hopfully she'll know in April. If you have ever been to the Cowgirl Cafe in Bismarck, Mo, Jenny worked there as a waitress. I would say for the most part the navy has been good for her & will be good for her. She still gets a little home sick now & then. She had tried college, but just didn't like it ( too easy to skip class). She does well with structure & what better place can a person be but in some branch of the service for structure. Please let me know more about your daughter. Next time Annie is by here I'll have her look at your pics & see if she recognizes your daughter, since they graduated the same year. Keep in touch. Tammy
Hi Patty,
The same day Sam reported to Norfolk she was put on the ship for 6 days. She was upset that it was so soon but it gave her a chance to prepare for the 7 months. She emailed last night and said they haven't gotten very many packages delivered on ship lately so she is hoping that when they port they will get their mail. I think it has been an exciting time for her and I am kind of glad she didn't have a lot of time to be on post thinking about going out.
We live in Aurora. Sam has not been in quite a year yet. Somedays she likes it and some not so much...depends what day she emails I guess. This was a first all the way around for us....first time away from home, first time she wasn't with us for the holidays not to mention her birthday (dec 23).
She has only called twice since they deployed, we get emails once or twice a week. I don't know that we have ever gone a day without talking before she went to basic training. But I think this was a very good decision for her.
Sorry it took so long to answer, we are recovering from a fire that took about everything. Yes, Justin's birthday is January 6. It seems like just yesterday...
sorry that your daughter was disappointed with her bday. But @ least she did get her cake & now has the weekend to do something with her friends. Now I am kind of worried, cuz my daughter may not even get a cake ... I have 'talked' to my daughter 2 or 3 times in the last few days for a couple of seconds when she is online on her cell phone ... I am hoping to speak with her this weekend, for more than a few seconds, maybe even actually talk to her !
I will let you know how the bday goes ... I am praying, crossing fingers & whatever else I can think of ...
~ Kara
Sorry to hear about the cake difficulties ... see what I mean about Navy Mom's needing someone local to help/coordinate things just like this! At least you still have a friend who is willing to take care of a cake for you. I am sure if you are willing to go to so much trouble your daughter knows you love her, even if you can not be with her on her birthday (this year).
On another note ... I still have not heard from the other Navy Mom who has a daughter on the same ship, or from the daughter direct. Oh well ... this is soooo frustrating !
I wanted to share this with you ... I just talked to my daughter (IM'ing on AOL IM), she said she is going to a birthday party/get together for some other female sailor tonite ! She said its a female from another ship ! How 'weird' is that ? On your daughters birthday !
Oh, and one more thing my daughter told me ... My daughter said she was driving back to base Monday (Jan 5) nite & witnessed a car accident (one car). There were 2 people in the car. A guy & a girl (not Navy) that were killed. The girls name is Breanna. (My daughters name is Breane.)
Happy Bday to your daughter ! I will keep my fingers crossed that both our girls get cake & have a good birthay --- and, if its not asking too much ... that they both call their Moms !
~ Kara
Hi Patty !
I know how disappointing it feels to try & get something to work out, long distance. Too bad there isn't like a co-ordinator or something (someone), some office that could help with this stuff ... with all these sailors in Norfolk (& other bases) there has to be other Moms/parents who are feeling the frustration. Things aren't really working out for me either ... trying to get a cake made on the ship. I haven't heard back ...
Not much I can do from Florida. I really wanted to do more for this special birthday. I don't want it to be disappointing for her.
Many of her Navy friends of course want to take her out & get her drunk. Something she said she really interested in doing. I am not stupid, I was 21 'a few years ago' myself, & know that that is what alot of people think is the best thing to do for someone turning 21. What fun, (sarcasim) next day having hang-over. Eventually the idea of getting drunk for every occasion, especially for a 21st bday, wears off ... My daughter actually made plans to go see a band perform (small scale concert) at a place just a few miles frm base & her friend lives only a few blocks away & they are walking.
A destroyer, wow, thats a big ship. With all the 'activity' around the world right now, deployment schedules & destinations are surely going to change. My daughters' ship, as well as others, that I have talked to their Moms, deployment (approximate) dates have changed several times. There is alot going on ... have been following alot of news from alot of websites including Military news & Navy news sites.
What is your daughters job/rate (do on the ship) ?
Let me know if or how you get the whole cake thing worked-out ... wish I could help, or knew how to help. Not even able to help myself get a definite about a cake for my daughter. Feeling helpless ... its so annoying !
Hope the rackpacks do not take as long as website suggested may be shipping time. I am going to talk to few Moms & see what they did & how they got things taken care of, not being in VA.
Got to run ... its 80 degrees & I am grilling dinner outside ... don't want to burn it !

My son is an AO on a squad. He is attached to the USS Enterprise. What is your daughters rate? Is she on a ship?

How did you like that good ole Mo weather today? Awesome wasn't it...to bad the weekend isn't looking to warm.

my son is on a sub and the other 2 are still in school in SC.
My boys love the navy too!
