He's in Africa for 2 more weeks. he hates it. He hates the heat, the poverty, the filth, the dead camels burning by the side of the road, the qat chewing bondage the people are in, the extreme government luxury in comparison. He hates the over sized shipping crate he has to call home. However, he was married just 10 days before he deployed. When you're missing your sweetheart, everything is worse. Hence he has a very negative attitude.
I have sent him books, letters, pictures. Candy that does not melt is ok, but not chocolate. I sent him journals and drawing pens and paper and water colors. We finally sent him his guitar, since he was going nuts without it. So by all means, if your boy is musical at all, send him something to make music on. Even a harmonica. I did brave sending him some chapstick, making sure it was well wrapped and sealed. He told me it made it ok, but the Easter chocolate was smeared all over everything. News of his favorite sports teams was always welcomed too. Maybe an issue or two of Sports Illustrated or the sports section of the local paper would be good if your boy's a sports fan.
Mark called us on Skype a few times and it was good to see him, even though he was so sad, so make sure your boy has the internet. Mark said that a lot of the base's bandwidth was taken up by people playing. W.O.W. and other interactive computer games, so while these are cool, they mess up everyone else. I would recommend a hand held game boy or something along that line if he's into computer games.
Mark worked hard while he was there. As a CM, he was on call up to 16 hours a day between working on motors and taking watch duty. Despite how grueling it has been for him, and worrying sick during the pirate stuff, I'm proud of him and his service.
Hello~Saw you in the Seabee Group. My son was in Gulfport for A school, graduated in July.I have lots of pics and two grad videos on my page. Justins' battalion had just LEFT for deployment went he arrived. He is BUCA 25". Because they had just been called up', he now won't deploy till 2012. May be the same for your son, if they have just deployed?? HE LOVED GULFPORT! Good luck to you both...any thing I can help with??
Hi Lizzi, Just read your comment your son is a grad and go.. Enjoy him the short time he will spend with you... Good luck mom you probably won't wanna let go.... My son is going to Missippi for his A school. I hope that is right. Still aways from home we are in the edge of texas and new mexico.
Hi Sussanne,
My son is going to graduate on 10/17. He's in Div 393. We ar estaying at the Navy lodge. Looking forward to meeting other moms with kids graduating at the same time.
Sussane, I wrote a letter everyday and he always got them. From what I understand from my son, They got mail every evening Mon-Friday. It took about 4 days for him to get my letters. I personally never experienced them holding mail, but I have read that some have had their mail held for certain reasons. Hope this helps!!!f you have any questions, please contact me and I will try to answer them for you. Susan
Ok, I have another question do they get their mail or are they made to work for it if they want to read it? I am confused the websites I have read say they don't get their mail they are witheld from them ....Does anyone know exactly how that works? I don't want my son to get punished for me sending him letters he has only been gone with today 3 days and I already have a letter for all three days....Would this be wrong? Can some one let me know. Thank you,
Dear Sussane,
How are you today? This Navy for moms is such a blessing.
Now relax, Anthony is in good hands and will do fine.
Once he gets used to the rountine of Boot Camp, he will like it, believe it or not!! My daughter Kim loved Boot Camp, and many other moms told me the same about their children.
You said he was off, I assume Anthony left for Boot Camp today. You should receive a phoe call tomorrow, from Anthony to let you know he's there.
Now the wait, keep busy, it's great if you work. The first long letter from Anthony will be around the third week.
We all went through this. My daugher only graduated two months ago.
Stay calm and busy. Join the group "Boot Camp Moms". All the groups are listed on the main page of Navy for moms.
Keep in touch with other moms, and I am usually around. We will get you through Boot Camp....we haven't lost a mom yet!! HAHA!!!
Ask anyhting you want, that is what we are all here for.
You take care and God bless.
Barbara
Pictures in boot camp - yes and no!! The best idea I have seen is have them printed up on paper and fold them like a letter. Some RDC's make them open "fatter" letters in front of everyone and sometimes to PT for things inside it. NO SINGING CARDS!!! I now just put small pictures on Derek's letters - just to give him a taste of home.
My sailor was picked up today and will be off to bc. I am not looking forward to that just one call I am ok and click....
So thank you for your support to all of you...
