Paulette, I'm so sorry for all that you and your family are going through. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was not able to open the most recent version of the schools, moms NROTC roster. Thanks for your work on this.

Thanks, Paulette! I am new to the social networking game and I must say I am really enjoying being part of the NROTC group even though I am still learning the ropes. I appreciate your warm welcome.

Thank you, Paulette! I picked up a full size one for him last week and will bring that along, but may wind up having to get the smaller one at Walmart up there. I checked the square footage of the quad dorms and I think his room in BARH is quite a bit larger, so perhaps he'll have room for it after all. I guess we'll figure it out when we get there!

Thanks again and I'm anxious for Sunday! We haven't heard anything from Kyle since he's been in Newport.

Hi Paulette,

I couldn't see the response to KP's question about the iron and board. We're bringing our son to report to his RPI NROTC unit on Monday the 17th, and I wondered the same thing. He's asked for an iron and full-size ironing board. He's in a double in BARH - should he bring them and will there be room for a full-size board?

Thanks!

Unfortuantely we will not be able to go back. He took most of his stuff, I have a few things that I have to send with his roommate. Luckily he knows his roommate, fellow BoyScout. He said he will come home in October. We live about 200 miles from the college, and we have a family reunion next weekend. I received my first email tonite, so I will be looking forward to one tomorrow. They sent it about 1 am this morning.

Thanks for the instructions. It had been a while since I was on here as I have been traveling as a nurse case manager . Look froward to future correspondence.

hello-I am a navy mom of a son who just got a NROTC scholarship (2yr) to the University of South Florida. I want to join the NROTC group for moms on here. How do I get added as a member?

Hi Paulette,
Just checking in. Went to SO last week. It was great - very informative. Met NROTC officers - they were so pleasant & helpful. The kids all seemed to really enjoy it and get something out of it, as well. Our son is a bit disappointed in being in Burdett Ave Residence Hall as it seems far removed, but I keep reminding him that it is very big with its own dining facility, so he will be there with lots of kids, not a just a few students they 'stuck' somewhere. He's ok with it, just not overly thrilled. He has emailed back & forth with his roommate who is also in ROTC. They seem to have some things in common. I know he is looking forward to all of this - I think he wishes it would just go ahead and get going - all this prep and anticipation gets kind of old when you are 18 and about to embark on this life-changing adventure/experience! I clearly remember how excited I was to move to school. Whole different story when you're a Mom sending your own child off. Large sigh. Already looking forward to Parents Weekend!! Guess I will see you soon at orientation!

Hi Paulette!
Just wanted to say thanks for your emails! We leave tomorrow for RPI and orientation that starts on Weds! It's really happening! We have been soooo busy lately... and I know when we get back the REAL work starts of getting all his stuff together to go. Summer is flying by!

Hi Paulette.
Thanks for the comment about EOD training. I guess it's not supposed to be something we learn too much about ;-) In fact (as a mom) it's probably better that I don't know too much about it for now. As moms, we always seem to be worriers when it comes to our warriors!

Thanks for the ironing board low-down! Yes, roommate names and room assignments have gone out. Of course, in true guy fashion, no one has contacted the other yet! Unlike girls who want to match comforters and accessories! You asked which dorm - right off the top of my head, I want to say Barton - is that the name of a residence hall - I think it is. We are trying to figure out if they have a bathroom or will be using a hallway one. Details, details. Oh, another question just popped into my head - when they show up for ROTC orientation, they should be wearing khakis, a collared shirt, and a belt? A particular kind of shoe? A little different than showing up for the school orientation. The weather here for the last few days has been breezy and nice - summers here are usually as humid as can be - we even have the A/C off! I am working on some furniture refinishing, so this weather is great! Regatta today in DC - he is rowing in one race and coaching another! Then, it's off to Tenn. for club nationals and then RPI SO. Phew!
Talk to you soon,
Kerry :)

Hey Paulette,

How are you today? Can't believe it's nearly mid-July! Our son got his roommate's name and info today! Makes it more real. So... as an experienced NROTC Mom, should we send an iron & board? 100 years ago when I was in college, the guys just borrowed the girls' iron, etc. since they only ironed anything in extreme circumstances. However, with uniforms, I am thinking it may be necessary. Your thoughts? Since we are coming such a ways, I am trying to not bring anything he won't use... RPI SO is coming up fast! Time to buy a laptop. etc etc etc - so much to do!
Hope you are having a great day,
Kerry

OK, it is so strange, sometimes, how we all are only '6 degrees of separation' (or less!)! Our son finished his open water dives for scuba certification this weekend. He met a diver's Dad there who was career Navy. This Dad has another child (son) who is going to Univ of Rochester - NROTC - and that is where my co-worker's son is going this year, also NROTC! This Dad said they are all likely to see each other here and there and gave our son his son's email address! Small world...

Wow! Thank you for all the hints and tips! Esp about PCA - he owns one pair of khakis!!! More shopping! We actually ordered a coat today from LL Bean, so that's taken care of. In high school, it was such a pain to get to your locker and then to class that most kids just wore a hoodie and ran from their parking space! This weekend, we are going over all those forms we just received so they can be handed in in-person at his July RPI orientation session. Did you just go to a local police station for fingerprinting? Tomorrow, he does one of his final dives for scuba certification, so that is pretty exciting. As for rowing, he has gone at it full tilt for three straight years - summer and fall programs and then spring rowing for the school team. He is assistant coaching a summer program now. Whenever we went to Stotesbury or Nationals, there were always lots of NY schools, but I don't think many of them were from as far north as you all. Jersey and Philly were always well represented, too. It is huge down here with many, many schools fielding crews. It will be strange not to be attending regattas... Well, I better get going on dinner - have a great July 4th!!

Oh, thanks for responding and being so friendly! We are sooooo new to this, not being a military family (yet!) Well, I guess we are now, huh?! Our son will be majoring in Biology, and with ROTC on top of that, we know our children will cross paths! That is nice to know. He is a varsity rower and is quite serious about staying in shape (he did not get that gene from me, although I try!), so I'm hoping that will prepare him. He is such a focused and determined individual - always has been. How tough is it, balancing NROTC and the demands of a top-notch school like RPI? How cold does it get in the winter? That's what everyone keeps commenting on, "Oh, better buy him a good winter coat!" Gets cold here, right outside DC, but I imagine nothing like up there. Gee, I'm all over the place with my questions today...

Hi Paulette,

Thanks for your message. It's nice to know your daughter will be at the same place (Newport) with Devin. Devin will be celebrating his 18th birthday during his stay in Newport. It's hard to believe he's turning eighteen, time goes by so quickly when they are young. He's currently in Boston playing basketball with a few guys that are on the school's team. I gave him the heads-up about conditioning over the summer for the NROTC program. Again, it is so nice to have this group of mothers to help with questions.

Justin was also the receipient of a mid-year scholarship. His scholarship also did not allow him to go on CORTRAMID last year , so this is his first cruise, this summer. I was also very concerned that he would not get to experience all the things that the 4 year kids do. He says he'll make the best of it.
His story with the Academy is just as unfortunate as Kara's. He also found out by phone, at school in his counselor's office, that he was rejected. His counselor called the Academy to find out why he had not heard anything. This was April 26. We had been told by a few parents who had kids at the Academy that if we had not heard, he was probably on a "wait-list" and would be offered a spot after the decision deadline. (There was never a wait list letter) His hopes were dragged out only to find out by phone that he had actually been rejected in February. He never received the letter!!! They really should send those letters out return receipt for God sakes. The poor kid could have put it behind him 2 months earlier and moved on to his other choices, instead of having 4 days to decide on plan B. Sorry, I'm venting, I'm still miffed about how it all happened.
He is happy at ODU and did not want to re-apply to the Academy. He just felt there were other routes to becoming an officer, and he did not want to lose a year.
