Hi Christy. My son was in P'cola from the end of July through mid-December when he finished his AT A school. The wait from when he arrived until the start of classes in early September was hard. He didn't seem much happier even once classes began. He didn't like P'cola at all. My Mr. "Don't Worry, Be Happy" 20-year sounded depressed and alone. As a mom, I hated being so far away and unable to "fix" things. The good news is that he survived and is now at C school on Whidbey Island, WA. He is thriving. He is back to playing soccer and basketball and going to the liberty center. He even went to a local "Mussel Festival" and ate mussels -- this the child who wretched at the mere mention of tuna casserole! So hang in there; it gets better!

Hi,
Sami lost her job in Aircrew because both of her feet were fractured in BC, she was very upset. She then had to reclass so now she is a CTT. (crypto). She is not on the air base anymore she is down about 5 miles on the IT base but still in P'cola. No she doesn't have a car down there she does how ever have the same taxi driver!! lol!! His name is Rodney and he takes her where ever she needs to go and doesn't charge her very much Praise God!! I told her now that she started school she needs to start saving for a car! The whole time she has been down there waiting she has been shopping quite a bit to pass the time! Girls!! So glad to hear that Jared is doing so well, how great you get to see him!! I'm sure having a car would perk him up quite a bit! It's tough having to pay for a taxi every time you leave base!
Thanks for the offering to pick up a care package but her base is not the same as Jared's! I'm going to pack her up a nice box for Easter and I think she really loves to get mail!!
Where are you guys staying in P'cola?? Let me know what you learn!
Talk to you soon and God bless your day!

Hey Christy,
How are you?? Samantha is still in P'cola. She finally classed up Friday the 13th and she has been down there since Oct. 7th!! I know this waiting is driving our kids crazy!! Thank God they can finally move forward!
So your going down to P'cola next month?? Larry and I were going to go next month as well but Larry had a heart attack last month and is still not doing well. Please let me know all about your trip!! I'm wanting to get down there so bad!! We did get to see Sami last month as she got 1 weeks emergency leave to get home to see her dad.
How is your son doing?? Does he like everything that he's doing?? Sami is liking school and I think she is getting used to being in Florida. I guess it all just takes time!
Hope all is well with you!

Christy, I have a long story about how poorly David was treated when he was sick but I just wanted to tell you that I bought the airline tickets for Spring Break. We will be staying in Gulf Shores and if you are in the area I would love to meet you. We get there March 28 and will stay until April 4. Hopefully, we will be able to see our son but you never know. Is Jared going through ATT now?
Since David was sick he got put on a self paced class which he feels is better. At least he isn't so bored now and MAYBE he will get to class up for AE school.

David did text me on Monday and was classed up for ATT but ,wouldn't you know it, he is so sick that he couldn't go to class. He was so dehydrated that he had an iv drip on Tues. and then I didn't get a hold of him yesterday. Right now he needs to get healthy and then hopefully this won't be a huge set back for him. He's a very healthy guy so for him to go to the medic it was a big thing and he was really sick.
We are planning on going to Pensacola the last week of March/first part of April for our spring break. Haven't figured out the airline tickets yet though.

Thanks so much for the info! It is very helpful. The Hampton sounds nice. I am sure that if Tom can leave base he would love to get a little further away. It sounds like the mall and the movies are about as far as he gets. I am thinking of going as soon as he can let me know what phase he is in. He is in phase 2 in aircrew, but now that he is moving to Corry Station he isn't sure if they will move him back to phase 1? I hate all of this "wait and see" stuff, but I am learning patience:0)

Hi Christy:
I read one of your posts that says you have been to Pensacola several times. I am just curious, is the Pensacola Regional Airport where you fly into? What airline do you use? I will be flying there from Washington State, so any info you can give me would be great!

Thanks Christy! Sounds great I can't wait to get there! Just got off the phone with Sami and she would like us to go down before May so I'm thinking April..
She said it was so cold there today they cancelled PT!! I wouldn't have thought that it would get so cold there! I hope it warms up by April!
Talk to you soon!

Hello, Christy.
Sean knew exactly who I was referring to when I told him we had connected. He enjoys the relationship you have created and sounded a bit proud of Jared's choices and that he was able to get the job he wanted. That is always nice to hear.
Hopefully, we will meet sometime soon.
Take care.

Hi, I haven't been on the site for awhile but I was wondering if Jared has classes up yet? My son is soooooo discouraged and so tired of waiting around.

Christy, I'm sorry to hear about the bad luck with your son. My son isn't in any better position now that aircrew is over. He is also waiting for ATT school and is just waiting around. He was also pretty upset on Sat. because he had tried to put in a leave chit to leave a day earlier which would have saved him $500.00 on his airline ticket home and was turned down but then on Sat. someone else in charge said they would grant early leave. It cost my son almost $700 for his ticket and that is leaving from Mobile since tickets from Pensacola were $1200.00!
I am just happy that he is coming home and I can tell that he is pretty homesick right now. Did Jared at least get his leave? Was he able to get a ticket?

It will be interesting what comes out when I actually talk one on one with my son. Right now it seems like one way my son had stayed motivated is by working out. He also tried out for the Navy wrestling so worked out a lot before the match.
I think that one of the biggest problems is boredom. There just isn't enough to do?
As far an I understand from my son the guys will have two weeks of ATT school (which hasn't started yet), then stay in Pensacola for AE school(for about 4 months), then go to Jacksonville for the FE school. The way it's been going it will be 4-5 months between schools. Hopefully both of our boys will see some classwork after their leave for Christmas.

I just looked up where Longmont was located in Colorado. My family is from NW Kansas,St. Francis. We went through Longmont a few years ago on our way to Estes Park. BEAUTIFUL country!

Hi Christy,

One of the best ways to learn the Navy lingo is to get a Bluejacket's manual. Your son got one in bootcamp, so if he doesn't want it, have him give it to you. I have both of my sons' from bootcamp! If he wants to keep his, then you can buy one from Barnes and Noble (online).

It is the book they give the sailors to learn about the Navy, so I figured it could teach this mom a thing or two too. I also was very fortunate that my first son, Chris, is a patient person who is a natural born teacher. So when I would come to visit, he would take me on the ship and show me around. He would tell me all the tidbits and helped me learn lingo, etc. I also did a five day tiger cruise with him...Lucky for me, because Aric was just the opposite. He had no patience for me to figure out what he was saying. He would just clam up and tell me to never mind. So I learned fast!

In the navy just remember to keep rate and rank separate. A rank is whether they are an E-1 or E-2 or Chief. etc. A rate is their job. A rate of AW is an aviation warfare systems operator. So your son would be a seaman recruit (E-1) AW or seaman apprentice (E-2) AW or seaman (E-3) AW...and then when he makes E-4 he is a Petty Officer third class and E-5 is PO second class and E-6 is PO first class and E-7 is Chief, then senior chief, then master chief...

It takes some time, but you will learn to recognize their rank easily and then soon you will know the rates too! Won't your son be impressed?

So far Aric loves Jax. He just did his first flight today as the solo NFO and they went to Waco, Texas. He said it was an experience to be sure, but he sounded very happy...maybe just because the first one is always the best one to have behind you!

good luck to your son and keep in touch. sorry for not responding sooner, but I don't get to check my email very often these days. Keep in touch and let me know how it goes for him.

Shannon

From what I can tell, FE used to be a rate but the rate was done away with in February and it was combined with a couple of others and they are all now AW's.

Go to You Tube and look for videos called "Helo Dunker". Give you a little idea of what they have to do during hell week.

Hi Cristy! I will try to answer as much as I can for you. A school will last about four months. That can vary according to the rate he is going for. After that it's off to SERE school in Brunswick Maine. That lasts about 2 weeks THEN, probably back down to Jacksonville. Now depending on his rate, he will have to have actual time in the air before he earns his wings. For my son, it's 50 hours of flight time. After that is when us parents get to pin the wings on. Of course this is all depending if your sailor makes it through all the schooling and training. So it will be at least a year before the wings go on the uniform. I can't wait!

Thank you! We really thought he was going straight to FL, but after meeting all the other AE moms (and one dad!) we were getting confused! Like I said, none of them are doing Aircrew and those that have completed BC are all doing ATT school before going to FL. We had no idea there were other AE channels to go. Eric was told that the only way to get AE was through Aircrew, which was perfect for him as he want to fly. He was really hoping to be certified Rescue Swimmer, but wasn't able to complete the 500yd swim fast enough. I don't think he was prepared to do it the first week either. But, he will have more opportunities to try.
I am a little anal about research and I think was better prepared than most. The beginning was hard, I think it's just the sudden no contact aspect. Eric is 20, will be 21 in April. We feel strongly that this is a path that he is well suited for. I'm really looking forward to him having his cell phone! I can text, the kids just like to inform me I'm quite slow! lol Thanks again for the info, I'm so tickled to find someone else going through this path. I'm sure we'll have plenty more questions!
