Hey Colleen-
Hope all is well with you...haven't talked to you in sooooo long!
We had a great time down in Pcola with Scott! He was happy and so settled. Good to see him that way. We got to see hom every day and that was the best. Did a ton of walking, talking, and eating while there. Went and saw the Blue Angels practice one morning, so amazing! Scott will be done with school June 26th and then who knows what will happen. Just know that he'll be able to come home for a few weeks then. Can't wait for that! We asked where he'd like to be stationed and he gives a different answer each time. Looks like an entire class of them were sent to W. Virginia. Should be getting ready for work...let me hear from you soon! Love you sister! xoxo
Hi Colleen,
I am just now starting to absorb this entire process that Ryan went through. His PIR on 3-13 was the most amazing day of my life! Thanks for writing to me and telling me what to look forward to and giving me all your advice. I am happy to say that Ryan was the honor graduate of Division 917, so you can imagine the emotions and pride we experienced when he received his award. We had VIP seating and went to a reception after the ceremony. It was just so incredible. So, now he is into the next phase of the navy. He started A school for hospital corpsman on March 25th. He is adjusting to his life outside bootcamp. He is still in Great Lakes and wasn't lucky enough to be in a nice warm climate. How is AJ doing? Give me an update when you get a chance. Also, please visit my homepage and view my "album" to see just a few of the pictures I have posted.
I hope all is well with you and your son. Talk to you soon.
Cathy
It is a Mom's right to complain about the mess the kids make in one breath and to cry when we have to be away from them in the next breath. It is part of who we are I guess. Our kids are so important to us and it is hard to believe that they can do it on their own, but they can. It is hard on us to let go. I am sure your son will miss you all, but I am sure he is excited about his new adventure and will adjust. It would be wonderful if you could join us on the 26th. It is great to have a support group of local Moms. They have been wonderful to me and there are a lot of new Moms coming also. Hope you can make it.
Hi Colleen, I know it is going to be hard for you to see AJ leave. At least he will not be too far away. Try to remember that he is now starting to live the dream that he has been in training for. Don't know if that helps. It is hard for us Moms to let go, but when you know he is doing something he wants to do, it is a little easier I guess. Chris actually had his PIR on 1/2/09. He went to MA school in Dam Neck because he is a Reservist. He is on leave now and then he will be stationed in the Bronx, NY. That makes this phase easier for me, then for you since he will be mostly home for now. He thinks it is very possible he will be deployed though. In the meantime I will not think about that and just enjoy our time together. He is a little bored already. He really liked the Navy life and is still considering making it a career. Yes, I do live in Warren, NJ. right down
78 or 22 from Phillipsburg. About 1/2 hour away. Did you know we are having a NJ MOMS GET TOGETHER on April 26th at Houlihans in Bridgewater? It would be great if you could join us. If you can, go to the calendar to the right, go to April 26th and you will see the event listed twice. You can respond to either post. It would be great to meet you!
Wish AJ good luck for me on his new adventure. Hang in there Colleen, I know you will miss him, but he is not that far away and it is someplace safe.
Colleen, yes he does get to come home for (I think) 14 days. Then it is off to Nebraska. I am like you the lord as some thing in mind of my Sailor. I might not think it is same. But I am sure he will watch over him and all the other sailors.
Hi Colleen. I am very happy for you. My son Zack was suppose to graduate yesterday also. But he was put back a week. He will be graduating next friday. Where is off too? Zack is going to Nebraksa.
Colleen,
Hi!!! Great to hear from you. Thanks for all your advice on PIR day. I feel alot more informed now.
Your son sounds amazing!!! Getting flowers from him on Valentine's day was a beautiful thing and just shows you how much he loves you and how much you mean to him! I'm sure you still miss him like crazy, but being able to talk to him must make it so much better than the boot camp rules! I am so glad things are going well with him. I bet he is liking the weather a whole lot better too!!
We mapped out our route and we are leaving early Wed morning. (3/11) My son and Ryan's girlfriend are flying in on Thursday and we will pick them up. We are planning a "meet and greet" with our Division group for some time Thursday evening. There are only 10 moms in our division group on this site. I wonder where the other 73 of them are? It's a shame some people don't know about this wonderful site. I wouldn't have made it through these weeks without all you wonderful people I have met here.
I have been sick all week with whatever respiratory bug is going around so I haven't gotten back to you sooner. My body misses the warm weather in Florida I think! Anyway, got 2 letters from Ryan yesterday. They will be starting week 5 on Monday and are really nearing the end. He sounds very upbeat and really seems to be looking forward to completing boot camp and seeing his family and is anxious to move on to A school. He is doing really well it seems. The greatest news is that he was voted the "honor graduate" of his division. This was done by his peers so he was so happy and I can't be more pleased. He has worked so hard and is so determined in his goals that I am over the moon about this. I was crying for hours after reading such beautiful things he wrote in his letter to me. He thanked me and his dad for raising him right and said all his good qualities and "the person he is today" is all because of us!!!! I was so touched, but he did this on his own and deserves all the praise. He is going to be receiving something from the commanding officer on graduation. I am beyond thrilled and so happy for him. I just hope the next few weeks go well and I am so nervous about battlestations. I will keep in touch and I thank you so much for all your encouraging words. I hope AJ continues to enjoy his A school experience and that you do get to see him soon. Love~Cathy
Hey Col-
How if life this week? Things are ok here. Had an uneventful Valentine's Day. Scott had me send Kelsey a build a bear in a Navy uniform and flowers. Got a really nice thank you from her. Scott is now hunting for deals on hotels for Kelsey to go down there at spring break time. Guess he is going to pay for her lodging and part of her flight. The boy must be in love! Just thought I'd drop you a note....miss talking to you daily! Love you! Jill
Hi Colleen!
It was so good to hear from you! How is life for you after bootcamp? I can imagine the relief alone knowing you can be in contact with AJ any time. How is he doing in school? Does he like it? How does he compare it to life in bootcamp!!! One thing for sure.... the weather must be wonderful. Nice place to be. Ryan will be going across the street to A school, so Great Lakes will be home for awhile. Tell me what A school is like. And, do they only have a special time during each day that they can communicate via phone and computer to family and friends, or is it anytime. I imagine they still live under military rules and restrictions.
Happy Valentine's Day, by the way!
I have a few questions for you about PIR. They will probably seem dumb, but I haven't a clue, so I will ask someone who has been through it. I know you said you got to the gates at 6:30 am and there was already a line. Was that line, a line of cars, or are we waiting on line outside at that time? This way I will prepare myself to freeze if it is outside. I am hoping it was a line of cars waiting to get through the security gates. Also, does each Division have a specific seating area inside, or do you sit anywhere. Do they pretty much direct you to where you should sit? And last, what did the dress code appear to be with the visitors? Do people dress up, or is it casual and warm clothing? I am bringing nice clothes to go out to dinner afterwards or the next day and we want to look nice while Ryan is in uniform with us anyway, but the graduation itself, I wasn't sure if I should just dress to be warm and comfortable. I have navy sweatshirts and things like that, but I wasn't sure what is appropriate and what everyone seems to do. I can pass this info on to my son and Ryan's girlfriend when they pack things to bring. They are both flying out. My husband and I are going to drive. We will start to map it out soon and hope the weather cooperates for the drive out. It still can be tricky in mid march, especially in those areas we are driving into, and even here in NY.
I heard from Ryan again yesterday, on a Saturday, which was unusual. He said they now have 25 mins before taps to write letters so I should expect a few more than just my one letter per week!! His letter was upbeat and he seems like he sees the light at the end of the tunnel!!! Thanks for all your thoughts and advice. I really appreciate everything. Have a great day.
Cathy
Hey sister!
So good to hear from you this morning! Glad to hear that AJ is doing well in his schooling. I knew he would! :) He sounds like he is determined and that is half the battle right there. You must be so proud.....rightly so.
We heard from Scott again last night. He is in great spirits and is so glad that he is finally down in FL. He will reach phase 2 by next weekend as he started INDOC classes on Wednesday. I sent his stuff on Thursday and it got there yesterday. Know he is glad to have some of his favorite t-shirts and jeans now. When we spoke last night he said that he forgot to tell me to pu his Milwaukee Brewer's hat in the box....mom was thinking and did that! Do I know my son or what?
I booked plane tickets and made hotel reservations for spring break down in Pensacola. We'll leave on the Saturday of Easter weekend and come home the following Sunday. Rachel is going to join us. Kelsey would love to but she has a totally different spring break than I do. She and Scott talked about her going down there in March, don't know if that will happen or not. I know they miss eachother something terrible. I think seeing him over PIR weekend was like a tease for her...made her miss him even more than she already did.
You are a wonderful lady to befriend a mom from bc. I know I couldn't have made it throught those weeks without you! You will ALWAYS have a huge piece of my heart! I loved seeing you in person, meeting Art, AJ, and the rest of your family! Take care you and I'll talk to you soon! love ya tons! Jill
Hi Colleen,
I want to tell you how much I appreciate your letter to me. You are so kind and sweet and it is so nice for you to share such words of encouragement. I read your last note to me over and over. It is so true what you say, that you send away a boy and you get back a man, but as moms they will always be our "boys", and Ryan will always be my "baby". It was so touching the way you described your hug and the tear and I was crying just reading it, I was so happy for you. Now he is coming home!!!! Well good for you. Your whole family must be estactic about that. Show off your handsome sailor to the whole state of NJ when he gets home.
I enjoyed my trip to Florida. I missed a few letters while I was away, but when I got home Thursday there were 2 waiting for me. They were upbeat and he sounds good and he is really into the thick of bootcamp now. Very intense, as you well know, but he says he loves it except for the yelling and the punishments. That's the Navy for you!
I was in NJ last night. Went to see Dancing with the Stars show at the Prudential center in Newark. On my way there, my cell phone rang and it was Ryan!!!!!! I was like, oh my god, oh my god. I pulled into a gas station and we talked for 28 wonderful minutes that I will cherish every day until I hear his voice again. He sounded grown up and held it together the whole phone call. I was so excited that I forgot everything I wanted to ask him so I told him to just talk away and tell me anything and everything!!! Their division scored the highest on the first academic test, and they were all awarded phone calls home!! He got 100 on his exam and he was so very very happy. He had inspections this week too, and he says they make everyone really nervous, but he knows what to expect now. Every day seems to be a learning experience for them. His division is the flag division and they have been practicing. He says he is in the front row, so I will definitely get a good view of him at PIR!!! They are going to start performing at other PIRs starting on week 5. They practice every Saturday. He has made some good friends and says his division works well as a team and that is really important. He says they were fitted for their dress uniform and he likes it and says I will love it, as he knows I always had a weakness for sailors!! Got his dog tags, which he said is very cool and they all jingle while they walk!! Loves the food, has his favorite raspberry ice tea. The small things that make them so happy!! They are all very homesick and count the days down just like us moms and says to keep the letters coming and now they can get pictures. I already sent a few last week and he said he just had to show them to the commanding officer for approval. He says he looks at them every night!! Hanging up was the hardest thing, and I lost it, but he stayed calm and told me to continue to stay on this site and he was so happy that I visit it every day. His PIR is 3/13 and it can't come soon enough. I just wanted to share my good news and tell you how special a person you are. AJ is blessed to have someone so wonderful as you as a mom.
Hugs to you~ Love, Cathy
Scott was on the phone and was using one of the guys phones so i had to run and talk to him. He doesn't have any of his own stuff yet...just put a bunch of stuff in a box to send him tomorrow. I'm gonna overnight it so that he has it by Friday. Can't wait for him to have his own phone again. He's hooked up with a guy from his division from bc down there....Marie's son. They really wanted to room together but it didn't work out that way. He got down there last week and is in a different barracks than Scott. They ran into eachother this morning at chow and hung together today. They have plans to get together this weekend too. I'm so glad that he has someone he knows down there.
How is AJ? Bet he is doing well. How long is his school? Scott's is 17 weeks but he won't start for awhile as they are backed up.
Well gotta run and do some school work. Love ya...let me hear from you soon! xoxo, Jill
Colleen,
I can't begain to tell you how much your email meant to me. I was tearing up. It is the sweetest thing of you to do to care so much about other moms out there. I am so happy your weekend went well and that you got to spend so much time with him. Now you must be on cloud nine knowing you can call him every day!! I was so excited as you described the graduation. I had chills. Can you tell me if you can use cameras and videos? There was a rumor going around that it isn't allowed and that seems ridiculous on one of the most important days of your child's life. I am actually in Florida now on a mini vacation. My husband came home from his 5 month detail in Washington Dc and we were both feeling down and I was so depressed being alone for the last 3 weeks since Ryan left so we called Jet Blue and we are in sunny Ft Lauderdale. I will be back on Tuesday night, just in time for the next snowstorm!! I made reservations today at the holiday inn express and suites which is 5 minutes from base. We needed a suite because of the sleeping arrangements we require. It is me and my husband in one room, Ryan's girlfriend in another room, and then my older 26 yr old son in the living room on a sofabed. $135 a night with a full hot breakfast for a 2 bedroom suite was too good to pass up and if I didn't grab it I would have lost it. Rooms are going fast. I didn't want to book 3 separate rooms, so I think we got really lucky. We decided to drive since Ryan's girlfriend has spring break from college that week so we have the freedom to take our time. My son will fly in on Thursday evening. I missed Ryan's letter this week since the mail came the day I left. Melissa got 2 letters and my mom got a letter. They both called me and read me the letters. I was crying in the restaurant as they read them to me. He seemed upbeat, working hard, likes the food, is making friends and is Yoeman of his division. I felt much better hearing good things. Can't wait to hear his voice. I didn't get a phone call yet, but I hope it is soon. He also got 14 letters on the very first mailday and he said he felt so popular. I wrote 2 letters to him already from Florida!! You are a true treasure to have found and I thank you so much for being such a reassuring friend to go to for anything. I really want to thank you for that. Enjoy your phone calls. Stay well....Cathy
Hi Colleen-
Good to hear from you! Sounds like AJ is all set in Tx. Good for him! I hope his plans work out and that he can be on the east coast with you. We were down to see Scott yesterday in GL. (one good thing about him being there is that we do get to see him now!) We spent the night and then came back this morning. He was really good. Seemed like his old self again. I kinda felt like he wasn't last weekend. We enjoyed him but there was something missing...his spark. Well, it was back this weekend. He was a riot! I'll let you know when he gets orders. I'll send you a private message with my email...love you! Jill
We did hear from Scott last night. We talked for about 45 minutes. He still doesn't have orders but hope he will by the end of the week.
How are you? I''m sick. Have what Scott had the last week of BC. Went to the dr. on Monday and they started me on a Z pack. Am not feeling a whole lot better yet.
Where is AJ? Are you able to talk to him? How is Amanda doing? Bet it was hard for all of you to say good bye.
Well sister....let me hear from you! Miss tlaking to you!
Hi Colleen-Way so ggod to meet you...so sad that we didn't spend any time together. How was your time with AJ? Is he off to Texas? We didn't meet up with Scott until about 3:00 on Friday afternoon. He moved across the street. He is on hold awaiting orders for Pcola. He is on a ship with a bunch of others waiting for word as well. We got him all day day Saturday and then again on Sunday. We left around 1:00 on Sunday afternoon...was sooo hard to say good bye again. The good part is that he has phone access and can watch TV but is doing work like cleaning to pass the time. We didn't hear from him last night but hope to tonight, maybe with good news about his orders.
Take care and don't lose touch with me! Love ya! Jill
Oh My God! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! He looks amazing and you are beaming! I am soooo happy for you. It must have been one of the highlights of your life. I can't wait. Thank you for mentioning that you may have seen Ryan's division. That made me feel so good. I finally got 2 letters from him yesterday and I smiled through my tears as I read them over and over again. He seems upbeat and happy, but you never know how much they want to tell "mom". That numbness I have felt for 12 days just left me when I got to read his letters. I stayed up until one in the morning last night writing him back. He hasn't received any mail yet, but when he does, he will need a crate to hold it all!!! So, where is AJ off to now? Does he leave right away? Was he in a grad-n-go program? How long did you have with him? Where did you stay and what time did you arrive for graduation. Did you get a good seat? I am so thrilled for you. Now the next phase begins for you, but at least you can be in touch with him now. I hope you post more photos soon. I am so happy for you that I am tearing up. Thanks for getting in touch with me. It means so much.

How is AJ? Bet he is doing well. How long is his school? Scott's is 17 weeks but he won't start for awhile as they are backed up.
Well gotta run and do some school work. Love ya...let me hear from you soon! xoxo, Jill
just wanted to let you know that scott got orders on Monday and is now in pcola! I am so happy! gotta run but will talk to you later.
Jill
Take care and don't lose touch with me! Love ya! Jill
