Navy For Moms

Instead of just telling you about what your son or daughter will be experiencing at BC, Chief Arlene Maier will be your guide through this behind-the-scenes peak at Great Lakes. She’s actually an RDC at Boot Camp – a mom of three herself – and she’ll show you where your Sailor will be sleeping, eating, and training.

This video is part of a series to acclimate you to the many different areas of the Navy. We hope it helps you feel more informed about the Boot Camp experience and we encourage you to share it with your Sailor so they can get a preview of what’s to come!

Stephanie...I'm so sorry for your loss and the untimely shipping of your daughter to boot camp. We would all hope to have that sensitivity during this time but from prior military experience and having a son in boot camp myself I know that Grandparents are not considered immediate family and leave is not granted for them (at this stage). Hopefully by now things will have calmed down a bit and you're able to focus on the job you have at hand. Prayed for you and your family.

My daughter enlisted on her own, which is an indication of her devotion to the Navy. However, her grandfather passed away on November 19, 2009 and she had to ship out November 23, 2009 as it was after 5 on Friday before we could reach her recruiter. By the time he and his supervisor tried to contact superiors, it was too late, so she missed her Grandfather's funeral services. I received an urgent message on my cell phone to fed-x her identification back to her. Am I wrong to expect a little understanding or assistance for her under the circumstances (she was given a list of things to take to basic training, most of which was returned along with her identification). I am under enough stress dealing with the aftermath of my fathers death mainly my mother (they were married for 60 years).

Thank you for the video. This gives me a good idea of what experiences my son is going through. It will give me more specifics as to what I can write to him about. I can wait for graduation - couldn't be more proud of my son David!

I was at RTC, Great Lakes last year. I ended up getting discharged, but I'm working on possibly going back in the near future. I spent 7 weeks there last year and for anyone going, planning to go or that has a son or daughter going, this video does good at showing you basically how it looks there. I found it very stressful there though which I know can't be seen in the video. But seeing those recruits, I know how they feel.

I wish I had gotten to see this video before I left.
