Our sailor was also on hold for about 2 weeks before his school started. He was not on Ship 5, that is for RTC. He was assigned a ship on the TSC side, but then moved to the Missouri a few weeks into school. They do not have liberty to come home. They have to phase up to get liberty. Mostly they learn how to do their watch and clean. He has had holds in between classes, and most of they time they just have extra watch duties and they clean. They have more time to hang out.

@Lindseysmom my son was "on hold" for about 2 weeks waiting for more sailors to graduate to start school.. Hung out mostly he enjoyed the break after BC..

Generally, liberty is a no go on flying anywhere.  Every command has a liberty radius, to allow for emergency recalls.  Training commands tend to be the strictest on this, as the sailor is learning the rules.  Usually a flight means they have to take leave, and that does not happen in A school. 300 miles is average, your sailor should know what their limit is set at.

Still, if they're in phase 3, doing well in school, and do not have duty, they can put in a chit for permission to go "out of bounds" and fly home.  Don't be surprised if they're told no, if anyone else has not made it back to school on time, that privilege gets rescinded for everyone for a time.  It's a "maybe yes, under the right circumstances" answer from me.

What a fabulous surprise Bandmom, I'm so happy for you and your family!!! We don't get to see our Sailor until December :-(

@LindseysMom - I think you have to be phase 3, and they cannot go outside of a 300 mile radius.

@Alejandra - there is a Hawaii (Oahu) group that is "For family and friends of Sailors who are stationed on the island of Oahu including: Pearl Harbor, NIOC (Kunia), NCTAMS PAC (Wahiawa), Camp Smith, Ford Island, Kaneohe (K Bay)" I'm part of that group as our sailor has orders to Pearly Harbor/Hickam.

We had a nice surprise on Saturday Morning.  Woke up to find our Sailor sleeping on the couch!!   He made his third phase of liberty, and got a family chit to come home for the weekend!!!  His sister was allowed to sign him out and bring him home.  (we live within the 300 mile radius.)  The two of  them surprised us!  He put in for the chit 2 weeks ago and it was approve Friday at 3:00 p.m.  Luckily she only lives 1 hour from base.  We are happy to say that he LOVES the Navy.  We are so happy for him.

Is there a group for hawaii moms?
Comment by Anti M on July 21, 2017 at 2:15pm

Will she be on a charter flight which picks up in Seattle or CA?  If so there will only be military and dependents on the flight.  What part of Japan?  We have several bases there.  I was in Yokosuka for 12 years (total, not all in one shot.  But almost).  That is the biggest base on the main island.  Sasebo is to the south, Atsugi and Iwakuni are air bases, MIsawa is a mixed branches base, and Okinawa is huge, but further to the south.

Do join the Japan Moms group. They are very good support, and there is a ton of information for you.
