My son is a junior, mechanical engineering major. He has always wanted to go subs, and that was reinforced both last year during the sub part of CORTRAMID, and this summer when he spent 17 days underway shadowing an enlisted man.

Just curious what year your midshipmen are and what direction they are planning on going. Has that changed over the course of their NROTC time?

Janite, that is wonderful. I know you are so proud of him. Pamb, that sounds like an exciting summer! I know !that his dad must be very proud, too!

I have to admit that I was hoping to hear from my son - at least  a text - but I know that NSO is intense!

Congratulations! My son is helping lead NROTC orientation at his college agin this year. As a shy kid, it was a wonderful way for him to get to know classmates at the start of his freshman year. Now as a junior, his closest friends are still fellow midshipmen.

We just got home from dropping our son off at NROTC NSO. I'm really excited about this new step in my son's life! It's been an interesting path getting to this point, but I feel certain he is right where he is supposed to be.

My son is NROTC at RPI. They do have a color guard occasionally at football games, but it is a volunteer thing. He has been required to help with collecting tickets at a game or two. Then again, Rensselaer is not exactly known for its football. Traditions must vary from school to school.
Comment by Glenni on June 17, 2017 at 11:04am
Do all NROTC units do "Freshman flags"? My son says he doesn't need football tickets because he will be part of the flag ceremony before the game. He's going to Auburn.

Thanks helenp.  The one in Flight School will be NFO (back seat driver -lol)  Yes, they are twins (identical) and their interests align.

Congratulations 2017Commission  I was a non-military Mom also. NROTC was a great fit for my DS too. He commissioned in 2014 and is now a Naval Aviator flying the P3 Orion. He just joined his new Squadron at Whidbey Island, WA. Flight Training is a lot of work, but he is very happy.

I  see that you have two commissioning at the same time. Are your daughters twins? My DS is an identical twin. His brother was not interested in military.
