It appears that my son will graduate on Dec 15th and then ship to A school on the 16th. Does anyone know what airport they fly out of? Trying to coordinate my flight in and out of the same airport for ease of travel. Thanks in advance.

whichever one the Navy wants - and your son won't know until shortly before PIR (too late to let you know until after PIR).

My son flew out of O'Hare but some fly out of Midway. I suspect it depends on where the most cost effective flights to their A-school destinations are at that time.

Well, booger. I'm such a planner. lol This is gonna require some more thought on my part as to how to decide when to return home myself. :) Thank you for the info though Navymum. I'm guessing that time of flights out won't be known until shortly before PIR too huh?

good guess :)

A tip I read here before my son's PIR was to send an index card in a letter towards the end of basic and ask him to put the flight info on it - it's small enough to tuck in the uniform pocket and he'll have it handy to give you after PIR

We drove and planned to leave Sunday but DS had a morning flight on Sat so we got up WAY too early and met him at the airport and stayed with him until he flew out and then drove into the city for the day and headed home that evening.

I think if I had been flying, we would have bought either Saturday evening tickets or more likely Sunday morning ones in order to have enough time to see him off at the airport and get to our flight even if they were different airports

Looking at flights now. Thank you for the advice. I think maybe Sunday morning would be a good time for a flight out.

Your guess is as good as anyone elses.  Most of the time they fly out of O'Hare but they can fly out of Midway or on rare occasions they fly out of Milwaukee.  If you want to be completely safe you will leave Monday or Late Sunday.  Your sailor will find out usually after BS21, when they will fly out.  The Navy doesn't want to buy a plane ticket only to have them not complete BS21 so it is truly last minute for some!  We stayed an extra day on the weekend (arrived late Thurs) and flew through Midway.  If I did it again I'd fly through Milwaukee just because traffic in Chicago is a mess.  I Live in CO where our highways are under perpetual construction so that's saying something.

I won't be able to pick up my ticket until Friday. Where is the Recruit Family Welcome Center in comparison to where they hold PIR?

That part has changed since my sailor had his PIR.

Try Here
Please keep in mind that they will be super busy that morning and you may not have enough time.  It would be better to arrive Thursday afternoon to pick up your tickets
Per RTC's website: Q. What are the hours of operation for the Recruit Family Welcome Center?
A. The Recruit Family Welcome Center is open Wednesday [1:00 PM to 6:00 PM], Thursday [10:00 AM to 6:00 PM], and Friday [5:30 AM to 8:00 AM]. It is HIGHLY recommended those attending the ceremony not wait until the morning of graduation to obtain your tickets. ***Certain federal holidays may require adjusting days and times. Please refer to the command website for those specific updates.***

Awesome! I just read somewhere the we had to pick up tix before 8am and that would mean I'd have to fly in on Wednesday, which isn't possible. Thank goodness you listed those hours. I feel so much better now. phew!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

You can fly in on Thursday morning and you'd also be ok.  They will be SLAMMED on Friday morning and this is one thing that the Navy does not wait on!! When they close the doors you are out of luck!!

Looks like I will be able to get there Thursday thankfully. I do NOT want to miss this!

Oh... One other trick--- Go straight on Buckley Rd Under Sheridan Rd, Make a U-turn at the Light and then Come back to the Light at Buckley & Thompson.  There will be less traffic coming from that direction so you will have an easier time getting in with the light.
