My son said there was a possibility that a family member could travel on the aircraft carrier from Hawaii to California (at the end of deployment).  He didn't know if this opportunity was limited to the family members of the enlisted sailors.  Does anyone have any info on this OR can you direct me to where I can get additional information on this opportunity??

Dear ProudStepMom:

My DS tells me that this is actually fairly common, depending on space availability. It is only for family members, i.e., no GF or BF. He did not believe it was limited to enlisted.

You can get details from the family contact office on the ship or have your son check with his CO.

Thank you for your response.  As it turns out, there is a great likelihood that the port in Hawaii will not be able to accommodate my stepson's aircraft carrier at the end of his deployment.  Meanwhile, my stepson is beginning to wonder if his stepmom is crazy for wanting to shoulder the expense to get to Hawaii and 'pay' to ride the same thing he is eager to leave!  (New house, new bride, dog in Cali  eagerly await his return!  Thank you for responding!!

BTW, the process if for your family member to contact the Ombudsman and provide the interested family member's email address.  In so doing, when the Commander makes the final decision, the family member will be immediately advised so that any travel arrangements can be pursued!

Thank you for your respone!

As it turns out, Hawaii may not be able to accommodate the aircraft carrier in port at the time the deployment ends.  It is not something limited to the enlisted.  However, in order to be notified ASAP (or when the Commander makes the decision that a Tiger ride is available) your son/daughter will need to advise the Ombudsman of your email address (from his/her ship email).  In so doing,  you will be immediately notified of the decision so you can make any necessary travel arrangements.
