I know this is not directly related to the Nuke program and I apologize for that. I have searched for the answers I am looking for but I was unable to find updated information.

I received a letter from my recruit stating that he will graduate BC if he passes his final tests but he will be put in THU due to further medical screening.

!) Can he have personal items (ex. his phone) while in THU?

2) Any estimate on how long he will be in THU before the medical screening is concluded (further screening is required due to the small possibility of him being anemic)?

Any additional information on THU would be greatly appreciated, I am concerned due to the discussion posts on the Ship 05 page.

X'sNukeGF - I address THU just briefly in my discussion in BCMoms group regarding Flying out of GL. THU (temporary Holding Unit) is one of the exceptions to, it seems Nuke's especially, for actually flying out from GL, the day after PIR to Goose Creek (GC), South Carolina.

1) Yes, those in THU are allowed to have their cell phones, laptops and, possibly other things that those staying in GL for A school may have. However, remember that they will have to fly out with their belongings, so they should still have the minimal items.

If your sailor (BF) is completely moved to THU and not have his flying orders (unlike my son who was trying to still get all of his papers signed for his orders taken care of on PIR so he could fly out that Sat) then he will have liberty the weekend of PIR similar to what those sailors staying in GL for A school will have. (Keep in mind, always stay flexible for any particular restrictions may be imposed on your sailor.)

I am slightly confused looking at your question. If your BF is just going to THU to be cleared to serve in the Nuke program and needs further medical approval - since this wasn't caught in MEPS (which is the primary reason the sailors are held in GL, as I understand it) he should be moved off RTC I think, and not actually be in Ship 5.

Kai Cat's son, just recently was in THU for a week or so, and may have more specific answers for you on what actually transpired while her son was in THU.  Their time there can vary anywhere from a few days to even weeks depending on the reason for being in THU.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you for your response. It was very help and I greatly appreciate the information.

X'sNukeGF - my son went into THU after BC. Chipmunk is spot on with her comments.  My sailor was able to have his phone which I brought to BC.  I did not bring his laptop because we did not know he was going to be in THU. The plan was to send it to him once he arrived in GC but that was only because there was a lot of stuff with it not just a laptop and it was too much to carry on the plane for him as they have limited space.  But I could have given him that at the time.  The big plus to THU is that you get to spend weekend together.  They get liberty for the weekend but they do have work that will be assigned during that week while waiting for medical clearance.

XnukesGF: my son spent three weeks at GL in THU. This was primarily because of the holiday stand down and needing medical stuff. Once we knew what the medical issues were, we were able to take care of that easily....then my dear son lost his military ID in the snow.... Well that was an entirely new issue to deal with. That said, there is some good that will come of being delayed. It might not seem that way now, but there will. Plan to take more time the weekend of PIR because he will have the whole weekend. If you live close enough, we do, you can even see him off at the airport when he does get clearance to go to GC.

SantaBabs81 - I had forgotten about your sailors long stay at THU - which is why I am learning and keep reminding new moms as much as possible - there is "normal" and then there must be room left for any scenario of "the exception!"

Hello! Yes, my son actually just left THU last week!

1. He had his phone, laptop, and his own underwear in THU.

2. No estimate on how long he will be in there.  My son was only in for a week, but there are some that are there for 4-5 months.  There is no feeling of "hurry and get out" there...it is all just navy time.

While my son was there he had a job every day.  It was either to stand watch/guard over the seperations or to escort the other ship 5 to medical, the bank, the nex...anywhere they were scheduled to go, in a little van.

Ship 5 is all combined, so separations, medical (broken hips - injuries), and people just waiting on paperwork are all together.

No-one can leave the area alone - they must be escorted in pairs.  They need to leave if on liberty together and return together.

What I don't know - my son already had his PIR so he was officially a seaman while in THU and I think that gave him more privileges (with jobs and phone/laptop/liberty time) but I am not sure.  It is possible if they did not pass PIR yet that they can't have their phones?  But I just don't know.  I will message you and ask my son later today!

I hope this helps!

I thank each of your for your responses. Each response was very helpful in bringing clarity to this situation. It also helped me with making plans for next weekend!

I greatly appreciate each member of our community and I look forward to continuing my participation as my recruit continues his military career.

My son was in THU for 3 months following BC due to a medical issue. They wanted to be sure of the cause of some swelling in his neck before moving him on to Nuke School. Then, it took a while longer to complete paperwork. They're still treating the issue, but it's nothing serious. It was so nice to hang out with him the whole weekend following PIR! So yeah, there is no "normal"...lol. Sometimes things get resolved quickly and sometimes they're drawn out for no apparent reason. But learning "Semper Gumby" has been a big help, and now we just roll with whatever happens.
